Ugly Lamp Contest 2013: FINAL ROUND!

This is it!  The big show-down!  The final face-off to decide our grand champion winner!

I now present to you in no particular order, the top-two finishers from each round.  They will compete for your votes in one last epic battle to see who will be crowned 2013’s Ugliest Lamp of All! Who will it be?  Start placing your bets now!

(Catch up here if you’ve missed  round one, round two, or round three).

Are you still with me, soldiers?

Stay strong.

We’ve come this far.

There’s no going back now.

1 final sonia hfrom Sonia H.

We first met Lil’ Miss Mr. in the second round, where he/she managed to squeeze out a small victory as the second-place vote getter.  Let’s leave her alone for now.  Looks like she’s trying to squeeze something else out at the moment.

2 final angela cfrom Angela C.

Deer in the Dread-lights put his best hoof forward and tap-danced his way into your hearts to score a solid second-place finish in round three. But is he on target to compete against the other terrors of taxidermy in this round?

3 final jenny wfrom Jenny W.

The sheer ugliness of this lamp, (that one commenter so flawlessly described as “medical waste from a liposuction”)  cannot be denied, but will Bacon Barf  fry under the pressure? Or will it step up and smoke the competition like it did in round three? We’ll soon find out!

4 final jennie kfrom Jennie K.

Don’t let his sad little face fool you, Raccoon of Utter Despair is a heartless competitor underneath that mopey gaze. Probably because he literally does not have a heart organ. Or a soul. Or anything beyond a fading will to live.

5 final jess mfrom Jess M.

The battle was fierce in round one, with Lemon Moody  oh-so-appropriately flipping between first and second place throughout the entire competition. At first he was like “yay!” And then he was all “shucks,” but he’s happy to be here all the same.  Or … not?  You never know with that guy.

6 final diane mfrom Diane M.

And finally, Owl-coholic awoke from his intoxicated haze to claim victory in the first round.  He attempted a celebratory fist-pump at the news, but could only muster the half-hearted wing-flap you see here, before passing out cold again.

Ugly Lamp Contest 2013: Round Three!

Make some noise ya’ll, it’s time for Round Three!  Are you excited!  And scared?  And a little nauseous?  That’s ok.  That’s what we aim for.

But first, let’s recap yesterday’s round, or should we say BLOODBATH, with Raccoon of Utter Despair rabidly clawing his way to the top.  We’ll be seeing him again in the final round tomorrow for sure.  He’d be busy celebrating if he could stop crying.

But who will he face-off against from Round Three?  Let’s find out right now!

a 13 amber kfrom Amber K.

This dead-eyed Delta Burke came ready to play. Or kill you in your sleep. Her hands gently reach out to claim your soul, as an off-key saxophone softly plays the Designing Women theme-song in the background. You can try to awake from this nightmare, but you never will.

a 14 Andrea Hfrom Andrea H.

Hey, what’s creepier than an heavily-bearded train conductor sharing his lap with a little girl?  Not much.  Besides making a lamp out of it so you can bask in the glow of this scene daily.  (And again with the inexplicable soccer ball!?)  I want to know what he’s pointing at.  On second thought, no, I don’t.

a 15 lauren ofrom Lauren O.

This lamp is like a feline version of Paul Revere, racing through the village with a lantern held aloft to warn us of approaching enemies.  “The ugly cat lamps are coming!  The ugly cat lamps are coming!  Oh … wait.”

a 16 angela cfrom Angela C.

Hey, want to join our hobby club?  We make lamps out of dead animals!  It’s great fun.  We meet on Tuesday nights. You’re required to provide your own glue-gun and deer legs. And be a psychopath.

a 17 jenny wfrom Jenny W.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if you ate a pound of jelly-covered bacon and then threw it back up along with your entire digestive tract, and then sculpted a pendant lamp out of the whole steaming mess, wonder no more!

a 18 kalpana sfrom Kalpana S.

 Go home E.T.

You’re drunk.

And I want my tart pan back.

Ugly Lamp Contest 2013 – Round 2!

You’re back for more, eh?  I hope you’ve iced down your eyes and fully recovered from the horrors of yesterday.  There’s no clear winner yet, but as of now, Owl-coholic seems to be eeking out the tiniest advantage over Lemon Moody.  If you haven’t checked out Round 1, you can see it here.

And now on to Round 2!

Be brave.

Breathe deep.

You can do it.

Someone hold me.

By the way, do you have a foot fetish?

7 amanda zfrom Amanda Z.

You don’t anymore! The only appropriate place that I can think of to display this lamp would be at a pedicure salon. A pedicure salon that hates customers.

8 sonia hfrom Sonia H.

Hiiii guys!  Did you know that I’m totally a girl? A cute girl!  I’m totally NOT a boy dressed up as a girl so I can spy on the girls! Haha! That would be creepy! Hey, could you be a dear and tell me if a large swath of my undies are showing?  They are?  PERFECT.

(This lamp is made even more awesomely awful by the fact that Sonia’s friend attempted to give it a makeover.  Shocker alert: it did not end well.)

9 rita ffrom Rita F.

I … have no idea what’s going on here. How is this lamp supposed to work?  Does it lay on its side like that?  Are you supposed to mount it to a wall?

Is she napping?  Is she praying?  Is she naked?

Hush now. These are questions the universe does not want answered.

10 erin hfrom Erin H.

Whoever owns this monstrous lamp should put it on the mantle of an identical rock-faced fireplace.  And then put another tiny fireplace lamp on its mantle.  And another tinier fireplace lamp on THAT mantle!  And so on and so forth.  Or also, in a dumpster.

11 sarah kfrom Sarah K.

If you told me you were planning on opening a scrappy-young-jellyfish-from-the-wrong-side-of-the-tracks-themed restaurant, I’d first say, “Wow, that’s oddly specific,” and then I’d say “Have I got a light fixture for YOU!”  This one to me is the scariest of all.  All I can imagine is getting tangled up in those tentacles and never breaking free until it digested and absorbed me and I became part of it forever.  *Shivers*

12 jennie kfrom Jennie K.

Hey Mr. musty old dead raccoon turned into a table lamp and left without a single shred of dignity in this world!  Why the long face?

Umm, you don’t have to answer that. I think I figured it out.

Ugly Lamp Contest 2013 – Round One!

Oh yes.  It’s here.  It’s HERE!

ugly lamp logo

It’s the moment you’ve waited all year for!  The Ugly Lamp Contest is underway!  Prepare yourself for the onslaught of ugliness that awaits you.  Steel your nerves, gird up your loins, and hug a friend. Your eyes and soul are never going to be the same.

But first, here’s how the whole thing works.  A panel of judges helped me narrow all the entries down to the top 18 ugliest of the ugly.  (THAT was insanely difficult).  Today we vote on the first six contestants, in no particular order.  Same thing tomorrow, with the final group of six on Wednesday.  On Thursday, the top two vote-getters out of the three previous rounds will FACE OFF in a head-to-head battle for the coveted title of Ugliest Lamp of 2013!  Winner will be announced on Friday and receive a $100 gift card of their choice!

And let me just say a big thanks to everyone who submitted their ugly lamps.  It was so hard to choose only 18!  So don’t feel bad if you don’t see your lamp here. We received a lot of similar lamps, for instance, we had very ripe harvest of Raggedy-Ann lamps. I am terrified to learn that so many of those exist. So be assured that we tried our very best to give your eyeballs the most varied selection of ugly possible.

Are you ready?

HA!

You’ll never be ready.

Let it begin.

1 katie sfrom Katie S.

Please approach this first lamp very carefully.  At a ceiling-scraping height of over 4 feet tall, this sinister lamp secretly plans to blind you with larger-than-life ugliness, then topple over and crush you to your death. But the ric-rac is a cute touch.

 2 amy sfrom Amy S.

Like I said, I received many Raggedy Ann lamps.  This one beat out the rest, and bears the scars to prove it.  She’s a little unstable.  Try not to make eye-contact.

3 diane mfrom Diane M.

I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers, but I think this mangy owl thing might have a drinking problem. Doesn’t hurt that he look exactly like Drunk Uncle on SNL.

“Hey, whooo-ooo you calling drunk?  I’m not drrrunk, I’m an optimissst!  Because if the glass is half-full, somebody might as well drink the ressst of it. And that somebody might as well be me.  Hooty hoo!”

4 cynthiafrom Cynthia

Someone sacrificed a lot of time, popsicles, and All-Bran to craft this popsicle-stick wonder.  But in return, they got an ugly lamp!  And probably diabetes!

5 Em Hfrom Em H.

Perfect for that kid who loves soccer balls he can’t kick, and celebrating Halloween all day everyday.

And nightmares.

6 jess mfrom Jess M.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

When life gives you a  demon-headed lemon lamp, feel free to punch life in the teeth.

My Son’s Bedroom Reveal and SchoolLockers.com Giveaway!

If you were here earlier today, you saw the PANYL makeover of my son’s dresser, which was part of his whole room makeover, which I’m sharing now!  It’s not really accurate to call this a ‘makeover,’ because this room didn’t even exist before.  Not really.  It was just an open loft, which was a bit excessive in a house that already had plenty of living spaces:  a formal dining room, a formal living room, and a large family room.  And only three bedrooms!  Who comes up with these floorplans, I swear. You can click here to see more about turning our loft into a bedroom.

So here we are mid-construction. I swear my house doesn’t always look like a war-zone like this. You can see the pony-walls being sheetrocked over.  They overlooked a nice drop-off to the tile floor below and were easily scalable by curious children, which really limited the furniture placement, and gave me nightmares all the time.  I was so glad to have them gone. And my son was happy to have his own room!

If you are curious, the dresser, desk and train station picture came from IKEA.

The hanging light, desk light and metal side table cam from my sister-in-law Kalli, who hoards amazing vintage treasures and then has a huge sale every few months.  She’s having one now!  Check her out at @decordeals on Instagram for more details.

Artwork is a mix of Ross, Etsy, and the wooden arrow, world map, and curtains I made myself.

And you are probably wondering where that fabulous orange school locker came from.  Well, I hope you were, because it is in fact fabulous, and it can be yours.

SchoolLockers.com provided this locker for my review and offered to give one away to a reader too!

If you’re looking for extra storage with an extra special touch, check them out.  They have a HUGE selection, and offer a variety of colors to match any room or scheme.

And these are truly authentic heavy-duty lockers, built to withstand regular use and abuse.  They’ll totally take you back to your childhood.  You’ll probably have the urge to slip notes to your kids (or yourself) through the vents.  Hey, you know what’s sad?  Most schools have done away with lockers these days!  Your kids might never know the joy of having a real-life locker to call their own.

lockers 2

But SchoolLockers.com won’t let that happen!  They’ve got plenty of options from  home lockers for kids like this one, not to mention industrial and athletic lockers for commercial/educational use too.  I did have to assemble the locker, which wasn’t difficult, but definitely a two-person job.  Consensus: both my son and I love it, and his friends all wanted one too!

Would you like to win a kid’s locker from SchoolLockers.com in your choice of color?

You bet you would!

PANYL: My new best friend

At the beginning of the year, I promised you a makeover of my son’s room.  Well, guess what?  I finally finished it. And then guess what?  We moved, literally, the very next day!  In fact, his room was the last one we cleared out of the house, because I was still taking pictures.  Because I keep my promises y’all.  Even if that makes me a crazy person.

Truthfully, most of it was done, and had been done for a while.  But I had really been wanting to figure out something to jazz up his Ikea MALM dresser.  I just think these dressers can’t be beat.  Super sturdy, clean design, and ridiculously affordable.  But it was a little too clean and plain  for an 11-year old boy’s room, especially since I was trying to incorporate a little bit of weathered industrial-ness to the whole vibe.

Enter my new best friend, PANYL.

malm

PANYL is a supremely easy to use self-adhesive industrial-grade vinyl created specifically for customizing IKEA furniture. What!? That’s like, all my dreams coming true in one sentence.

panyl

It comes pre-cut in precisely measured pieces, so all you have to do is peel and stick.  Easy to apply, no-VOC or harmful off-gases, and no mess! It won’t fade or peel, and comes in everything from wood-grain to polka-dots.  The wood grains are my favorite!  (I believe there are also a few options for West Elm furniture too).

panyl luv

And I love this fool-proof feature: As you apply PANYL, air escapes through tiny, etched grooves in the adhesive layer.  If you assemble IKEA furniture, you’re overqualified.

So, here we were before:

And a mere 30 minutes later (most of which was spent trying to put the drawers back IN, why is that so difficult with drawers anymore?  I swear you need two extra people plus a life coach nearby to talk you through it.)  Anyway, a mere 30 minutes later and …

Voila!  It looks awesome!  The panels lined up exactly, and I mean exactly.  I was a teensy bit off when I applied the first one, and had to trim it ever so slightly with a razor blade. But once I figured that out, the other five were a breeze.  It truly was the easiest vinyl I’ve ever applied to anything.  Very high quality to the touch.  I chose ‘Driftwood’ from the wood grain selections, and couldn’t be happier with the look.

panyl up close

It’s slightly textured with a matte finish, it looks like the real deal.  I love that it’s super heavy-duty too, it has easily withstood two eager boys, a curious greyhound, and a move to a new house.

I’m planning to share a PANYL giveaway soon, exciting! In the meantime, here are a few links to learn more about PANYL, see which IKEA products it works with, and how to install it.

And please come back later today for the entire room reveal! Double exciting!
