Ugly Lamp Contest!!!

The rumors are true. Better After is hosting its first ever
Ugly Lamp Contest!

Do you have a horrible lamp in your possession? A truly tacky table lamp? A sickening chartreuse chandelier? A pukey pendant?
A light so grim, you would rather suffer in darkness than actually use it? Perhaps your grandmother passed it on to you, and despite her questionable taste, you’ve hung on to it for sentimental reasons. Perhaps it’s a lamp your spouse adores and refuses to part with, unwilling to notice how it terrifies young children.
Well CSNstores.com and Better After would like to help! Simply send in an original photo of your horrid lamp to BetterAfter@live.com with the words “Ugly Lamp Contest” in the subject line.
I will post pictures of the ugly lamp contenders, and the winner as voted by Better After readers, will receive a $70 gift certificate to CSNstores.com to purchase the lamp of their dreams!

Deadline to get your pictures in is August 4th, 2010!

PS: These spectacular lamps are not contenders in the contest, just some examples I found via Google Images.

Swingin’

Marilyn had two outdoor swings on her hands, neither of which were in any shape to be swung upon. In a strange feat of physics, the fabric of the first swing was simultaneously dry-rotted and moldy. The second swing should really have been called a sit, because, in its chain-free condition, that’s all it had been doing for years and years.
So she combined the two, dressed them up in a fresh coat of paint, and made one lovely, mold free, honest to goodness swing. And swing she does! (Not like that, pervs!)

Sad Plaid

You will have to click on over to Beckie’s blog, Infarrantly Creative, to fully appreciate this do-it-yourself upholstery job. She gives an entire step by step rundown of how she managed to accomplish turning this $25 plaid monster into a chic little seat. And surprise! It’s a hide-a-bed too! Amazing.
I have only managed to reupholster one thing in my life, and it was a seat cushion, so basically, a square. And I just noticed the other day that it is falling apart, so I bow down before Beckie and her staple gun!

Diamond in the Rough

If I was thrifting it up and saw this table, I would have probably seen only that “interesting” stain job on the top and totally missed its great legs! Seriously, whoever stained it like that, did you even TRY? You managed to tape it off and stain, but you couldn’t be bothered to even measure to make sure you didn’t run out of space and have those poor half-diamonds on one end? Sigh.
So Jamie gave it a simple coat of blue that enhances the table’s shape, and opted for decals to add an interesting, not “interesting” touch. Did you know she got the decals from IKEA? (My boyfriend! I’m coming to visit you today!) and painted them white? Smartie pants.
Check it out on her blog C.R.A.F.T.

I otto fix that…

Guh-ROSS! That was my first reaction to this stain-encrusted ottoman. How, pray tell, does an ottoman get so stained? Were the previous owners very small and messy and using it as a TV tray? Was it a pet bed for an incontinent dog?
No matter, because Meagan from Meet Virginia prettied it up right quick. Little ottoman’s crusty days are in the past, and now she can look forward to a life of being loved. Thanks Meagan!
