Circle of Arms

Time for a confession. Even though I post about and drool over and adore all types of chair makeovers, I’ve never, ever attempted one. I know myself better than that. It would sit in my garage for fourteen years before I finally decided “to heck with it!” and took it back to the thriftstore from whence it came, thus completing the circle of ineptitude. But if I saw this chair …. this lovely, lovely chair … I just might take a stab at it. Aren’t those arms to diggity die for?

Nicole from Black Cab Designs did a great job, it fits right in with the rest of her stylin living room. Thanks for sharing Nicole!

Living it up in the front room

Did you grow up with a “front room?” The fancy room that no one was ever allowed to enter unless they were royalty or clergy and only then if they had removed their shoes?

I think today most people prefer to actually use the spaces they have, but also, ALSO… I kinda can see the point of the “front room.” It’s right there in front! It’s the room that should set the tone for everything else, the first and sometimes only look at your home that your guests see.

So, solution time: Make it livable AND awesome. Like Colleen did here! See more on her blog Lemondrop Dreams.

Debb’s Kitchen

Cliché alert! Less is more. Debb’s kitchen here shows us how. Gone is the ill-fitting microwave above the stove, leaving just a wide open breathing space. Gone is the seating area around the narrow storage-space eating peninsula. Instead Debb decided to widen it and put the back side to work. No more wasted space in this place!

I’m also loving the black and white cabinets and the darker band in the crown moulding. Cool! Thanks for sharing Debb!

Pinkies Up

Estate sales are always a bit of a letdown for me. I think the name implies too much. Estate Sale. How fancy! I’m expecting Marilyn Monroe’s grand piano and instead I find your Aunt Barb’s collection of jelly jars. They should just call them “More stuff than your average yard sale Sales.”

Anyhoo, Better After reader Joanna found this dresser for $35 at an estate sale. The finished product really has an Alice in Wonderland vibe going on, don’t you think? I love all the curves.

And if you were in the mood for some more diamonds, (or shall we use the fancier term: harlequin) then this trompe l’oeil table will not disappoint. (ooh! Two fancy terms in one sentence! Perhaps we should don our kid gloves, meet for high tea, spend the afternoon at estate sales and make a day of it!)

A Review

Ok, so the following pictures are not of the most exciting subject ever. It’s a mattress topper. (I threw Koy on there for some added cuteness). But CSNstores.com was kind enough to let me review a product, and that’s what I chose! (Sidenote, it is RIDICULOUSLY hard to narrow down your choices over at CSNstores.com, because they carry, literally, like seventy billion products).

Anyway, our guest bed situation was somewhat dire.

They say that “futon” is Japanese for “unwanted guest.” “Hide-a-bed” is just more of the same. You know things are bad when your brother-in-law comes to visit, flies in on a red-eye with a brain-melting fever and a raging case of the flu and still opts to sleep on the floor. (Sorry Jeff).

We don’t have an extra bedroom ’round these parts, instead we have one of the most useless inventions to ever disgrace homebuilding: a loft. I have no idea what to do with the stupid thing. For the longest time it served as a toy catchall/clean laundry landing pad/guest room. That’s right, there was a queen sized bed just hanging out in full view, smack-dab in your face when you walked up the stairs. “Oh … uh … who’s room is this?” people would inevitably ask. My sister stayed with us when she first had her baby, we tacked sheets up all classy-like around the bed for privacy. Not rad.

Finally annoyed enough with the whole shamdangle, we recently tossed the bed and put a big, fat sectional up there so we can pretend it’s a real room and at least the kids have something to jump off into the clean laundry. Thus the hide-a-bed, and it’s pathetic excuse for a mattress, which I’m certain is just broken shards of glass neatly wrapped in mattress material.

So a mattress pad was in order! Two lush inches of memory foam to comfortably swaddle our guests until the day we can turn that stupid loft into a normal bedroom with walls and everything, and all will be right with the world at last!

Anyway, we like it, as you can see. It folds up nicely into the hide-a-bed and fluffs up nicely when it’s not in hiding. It would be great on a regular bed too. Going through CSNstores.com was a breeze and it arrived in less than 2 weeks, and free shipping too! Can’t beat it. See it here.

Setting the Stage

I’m no real estate expert, but I’d bet that staging your home is one of the most important things you should do when trying to sell. I once had a friend trying to sell a beautiful, almost brand new home in a great community. She had no bites until she switcherood some furniture that she already had around and created “dedicated” spaces. The house was sold within weeks, nay, days! Even if you aren’t moving, just clearing out the clutter can make your home feel more homey, homie.

Rita here de-cluttered and staged just about every room in her house. She also wrote a really introspective post about the whole process which I quite enjoyed! Check it out on her blog The Intertidal Years.
