Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows once wisely counseled us that you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone. (Yes, I know Joni Mitchell sang it first, but I wasn’t even born then, so we’re going with Adam’s version). Anyway, the ‘what’ I’m talking about in this case is a pantry. My old house had such a nice pantry. Tall and spacious – you could sneak in there and eat several handfuls of chocolate chips before your kids ever knew you were gone, let alone that you even had a secret stash of chocolate chips. Not that I would know.
Now, there are no secrets. Our ‘pantry’ is nothing more than a really deep cupboard. No place to hide anything, yet nearly impossible to see what’s stuffed in its darkened confines. Jamie had the same problem. Cramped, under-performing storage. So she ripped it out and made a butler’s pantry instead! Light, bright and *gasp* useful! See it at So Much Better With Age.
But that wasn’t all. Jamie set her sights on this freeloading wall, which wasn’t doing anything to earn its keep in the household, except maybe holding the roof up. Psh. Well, why not turn it into a kitchen office? A few cabinets and a countertop later, and it’s pulling its weight alongside everything else, and looking good doing it. See more on her blog So Much Better With Age.

December 18, 2013 at 9:07 AMGirl, I’ve got 4 kids and they have all figured out why Mommy makes 15 trips a day to the pantry and her breath always smells like chocolate chips. I’ve resorted to hiding food in the stock pot, slow cooker and even an empty box of tampons. No one EVER looks there! You’re welcome.

December 18, 2013 at 11:11 AMI wish I had room for a kitchen office. Very nice! Oh, and it’s not my kids I have to hide things from, it’s the hubby. He is the chocoholic in the family. If I didn’t hide the chocolate chips, I’d never get a cookie made at all.

December 18, 2013 at 12:56 PMOooh. One of those would be just the thing for me! I have this big weird L shaped section in my kitchen on the way out, totally useless, no cupboards or anything…
Great ideas!

December 19, 2013 at 7:15 AMWhat I want to know is where does she now keep her dry goods? If I did that to my pantry, I’d have to leave my cans out on the counter or take them to the garage. It looks nice, but it doesn’t seem all that functional for a kitchen pantry.

December 19, 2013 at 9:44 AMOhmigoodness, when you talked about hiding in the pantry eating cookies, it’s like you were speaking to my heart. I’m so thankful mine has a door, and that sometimes my three year old considers the pantry her ‘prison’. Because mom doesn’t mind being locked in with the oreos…
