Prefab Rehab

The ’90s called. They don’t want their orange-toned cabinets back. The ’90s called because they’re in rehab and currently taking steps to make amends. They don’t know what they were thinking with all that orange, and they want to apologize.

Roxanne knew it was time to let go of the past too. Her kitchen was so overrun with honey oak, it might as well have been wearing scrunchies and watching TRL. Let’s see how she brought it up to speed.

White Kitchen with Subway Tile

White on white, subway tile, glossy quartz counters, stainless steel appliances … welcome to … whatever we call this decade!  (Seriously, what do we call ourselves right now? Two thousand and teens? Help.)

Roxanne and her husband made the most of their budget by doing a lot of the work themselves. Did you know you can save around $500 just by ripping out your own countertops?

One of my favorite changes (no surprise here) is adding uppers to the cabinets. Such a surefire way to make a builder-basic kitchen look high-end, every time!

They also ripped out most of the pantry to make way for a larger fridge, but managed to maximize what was left with a pull-out cabinet. You can see more of that on her blog The Honeycomb Home.

Didn’t it turn out great? Add it to your “Honey, I want to paint the kitchen white, it will be awesome, here’s proof” file.

No one can argue with that.

I’m so over white cabinets. White on white. So sterile…so hospital looking….so 20 teens. 😂 For real though, I’ve had a white kitchen for 10 years. Even before it was cool and so “in.” In 20 years we will all be wondering why we were so obsessed with white. It yellows…it shows all the dirt and grime…it’s a nightmare with children. Give me beautiful, traditional, and warm and natural wood cabinets any day.

I laughed out loud at “scrunchies and TRL”. I totally forgot about that show!

I really like the aesthetics of this makeover, but I question the practicalities of some things. Like the height of the microwave for one, it makes a step stool entirely necessary to even use it. Otherwise I see the potential for hot soup spilling down arms. And from the pictures, it doesn’t look like there is the necessary clearances around the fridge for proper ventilation.

My poor kitchen really deserves one of those so called apologies! Poor thing had way too much orange added to it. I am hoping I am hoping to turn it into something like your new amazing kitchen!!
