Come to the light.

If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you have probably heard about my knotty-wood phobia. It creeps me out! I can’t hardly look at pictures of it, let alone be surrounded by it in a room full of beady little wood-knot eyes that watch my every move. Awful!

I also have a fear of dark, overly ornate wood, because it looks like a coffin to me. Other than vampires or people who are like, really goth, who wants to furnish their homes with coffins? No one, that’s who.

That’s why Courtney lightened up this dreary armoire with white paint and a glaze job that makes the details jump out and say “Hey! I’m interesting and fabulous, NOT a destination for human remains!”

To recap, Dark ornate wood: scary. Light ornate wood: fantastic! Thanks Courtney!

Head Plan

True story: We have been desperately searching for a big girl bed for Miss Mia, our 2-year-old daughter. Obviously, I’m in the business of before and afters, so I’m not about to waltz up to any old furniture store and buy the first bed I see. Nope, Goodwill and Craigslist all the way babe!

Like Centsational Girl says, “I completely reject the notion that second-hand is second-class.”

Anyhoo, it took forfreakingever, but last night we finally found the perfect little wrought-iron bed on Craigslist. (Word tip of the day: it is indeed spelled wrought-iron, not rod-iron, not wraught-iron, and good heavens to Betsy, certainly not rot-iron).

What does that have to do with anything, you ask? Well, if the bed thing hadn’t panned out, Rachel’s headboard idea here was my Plan B. See it on her blog And I Thought I’d Never Have a Blog. Ha!

File Sharing

Filing cabinet makeovers are close to my heart, because that was the very first post that kicked off Better After! It’s still one of my all time favorites, see it HERE. And I’ve featured a few more filing cabinets since then, check those out HERE.

But Leah took it even further and replaced the pulls on her cabinet to make it look like a really real piece of furniture. Can I get a “genius!” Yes.

See more from her on her blog California Callahans.

Sand, Primate, Paint

Sierra wasn’t monkeying around when she got this dresser for free on Craigslist and finished it up with about $6 in paint. You know what I find in the ‘free section’ on Craigslist? Piles of gravel and mystery stained mattresses. There is just no fixing that with paint.

Super cute, thanks for sharing Sierra!

Don’t Wine

If you aren’t a big wine aficionado, then wine racks really serve you no purpose. Actually, there are probably tons of uses for them. I suppose I could put water bottles in there, or junk mail, or pairs of socks or whatever. But then it just looks like you are using a wine rack to store your socks and everyone is confused and probably thinking “What, you can’t just use the top drawer of your dresser like everyone else, huh sock snob?”

Kari solved that problem by removing it altogether for a sweet little console. Isn’t the color great? Thanks for sharing Kari!

Super Serene

I’m having a hard time getting going this morning. Still shaking off my guacamole hangover, I suppose. Did you watch the Super Bowl/commercials? My favorite was the Reply All ad, ha! You can watch it HERE, if you are so inclined.

But if you want to see a fantastical bedroom makeover, you can click on Wendy’s blog Relatively Unique. The new lavender and cream palette is sooo much more soothing than the oranges and reds. Soothing and serene are words that should describe your bedroom, and if they don’t … well, get moving on that already!
