This heat is getting to me, guys. It’s August — August in Phoenix — where I could be sitting in an ice bath and still be sweating. I am, in fact, sitting in an ice bath and sweating. I’m not really. I’m sitting in a chair. But an ice bath sounds nice. Did you know it gets so stupidly hot here that only hot water comes out of our faucets? I have friends who literally put ice cubes in the tub when they bathe their babies. At least some of us are getting ice baths, I guess.
Also, everything in my backyard is dying because A) it’s stupid hot and B) I haven’t been watering it. I know, I know, it seems like there is an obvious solution to part B, but here’s the thing. My watering system only has two settings: ‘don’t work’ and ‘flood the whole damn neighborhood,’ so basically I just close my eyes when I go outside and that seems to be working for now.
Here’s a backyard that you won’t want to turn a blind eye to. Molly at Almost Makes Perfect. transformed this weed-filled space into a backyard oasis, and this is just a tiny glimpse of it! Head over there to take in every detail and creepily pretend that its your own backyard like I am.

August 17, 2018 at 6:51 PMOh, I feel your pain, as I live in Mesa. HOT! And the thing that’s discouraging is it will be hot until about Thanksgiving! Here’s what I do when I shower. Turn on “cold” water (while it’s still the sort of cool water that is in the pipes in the house) and quickly get wet. Turn off the water & soap up. Turn on water and try to rinse off before the “cold” water becomes HOT. And I totally remember putting ice cubes in the bath tub when my kids were little!!
Well, enough about the melt-your-face-off heat. Just want to say that Molly did an amazing job with her backyard makeover! I checked out her blog. Thanks so much for sharing this, and TRY to stay cool! As I sit here, sweating 🙁

August 17, 2018 at 9:14 PMWhen I moved to Utah it freaked me out that the water from the “cold” tap was cold. Even in summer! It’s supposed to just be tepid!

August 18, 2018 at 7:59 PMWhen I was in Phoenix in April, it was 109F. I was like, Hmmm reminds me of a good old Aussie summer. THEN I went….WAIT? It’s APRIL here for flying fox out loud! No way San Jose, could I survive an AUGUST there. Man oh man, even my delicate snowflake of a brain is melting just thinking about it!
What a transformation of that backyard though! Woohoo. Dehydrated grass to super cool (ok not so much in temperature.) backyard! Nice.
BTW it is about to snow in the mountains near me today. It was WARM I say, WARM a week ago here in the Land of OZ! Waaaah, I need some kind of ice like a hole in the head right now.

August 19, 2018 at 2:23 PMWhen I lived in Saudi, in the summer we turned off the hot water heater completely. The water sitting in it (in an air-conditioned house) got cold so when showering we had cool water from the hot tap and hot water from the cold tap.

August 20, 2018 at 7:45 AMWOW!!! I had a legit reaction that surprised even me….when I scrolled to the “after” I said “OH MY GOSH!!!!” out loud…..I love it. And also, I feel your pain, I’m living August in SC, which = stupid ridiculous amounts of humidity. You walk outside & LITERALLY within 2-3 minutes you are drenched with sweat. The air is just….thick! I love fall & spring & I’d rather be cold than hot any day, so I’m even ok with winter…..I am NOT one of those I love summer people 🙂 LOL
