Unit of Treasurement

Seems to me that fewer and fewer people need giant walls-o-entertainment anymore.  Our TVs are slimmer, our space-eating VHS collections have been replaced by DVDs, which have been replaced by Netflix, and rows and rows of CDs have been replaced by iPods and Pandora.  That’s how it is in my household anyway.  So what’s a girl with a big, fat entertainment center to do?

Sell it, sure, but you practically can’t give these things away these days.  I saw one for sale recently that was even bigger than this for $125.  You can hardly buy a coffee table at Target for that cheap!  Well, what about this brilliant idea from Courtney at Golden Boys and Me: turn that outdated entertainment unit into a true treasure by transforming it into a classy kitchen built-in!  Because universal truth alert: even though we may no longer need acres of space for our media, we’ll always, ALWAYS need more storage in the kitchen.

Love it! I’ve been looking for a cabinet for my kitchen and now I’m inspired to do this with a giant entertainment center. They’re always at Goodwill and other thrifty places.

Nice! I can think of several uses for this myself. I always need more storage, everywhere…

Somewhere I saw someone had taken this beautiful entertainment center and cut the depth down from whatever, 24″? 18? to 12″. It became a beautiful pantry in this person’s dining room. They just put another back on it and drilled new holes for the shelf pegs.

I see these all the time at reuse centers. You’re right that you cannot give them away. They’re just too big for me to tackle, but I love seeing what someone else has done!

Thanks for sharing this great makeover.

I’ll keep this example to show people who buy the big entertainment units that end up at my consignment store. Brilliant!

Seriously awesome! LOOOOVE this! Pure genius! So wish more people would “upcycle” rather than fill our landfills with this stuff!
Christine, I took out a 2′ deep built in cabinet pantry in my kitchen and “cut it down” to only 12″ deep. It is NOT an easy task, but it is doable and it changed the entire feel of my kitchen. I lost 12″ of depth to the pantry but honestly, the stuff in the back just got lost anyway!

I really love this transformation.I would like to do it myself, but I have had the constant experience that the paint stays a little tacky. Does that happen to you? What paint do you use? Thanks for the great idea!

I’ve been trying to convince my husband of this for years. He simply does not see my vision. Thank you for sharing this. I think he may actually see how the entertainment units could be used as pantries.

I need a hutch. My dining room wall is such too large for the average hutch. The scale make the hutch look scrawny. This inspires me to find an entertainment center. If you made doors for the far right end, added shelves in the middle, possible glass shelves you would have a huge hutch!
