<<this post is in collaboration with NatureBox, all opinions are 100% my own
As you may know, we moved to a new house a few weeks ago. We are slooooowly getting things put in order. There are pockets of done-ness amidst the shambles. My oldest son’s room is perfectly put together, the other bedrooms currently look uninhabitable to human life.
But today I’m going to share a little tour of my favorite room in the house, the kitchen. It’s not 100% done (is anything ever?) but it’s unpacked and clean, so you’re gettin’ a tour!
It’s very white and bright. I’ve been craving white cabinets for so long. Our old house had the most unfortunate combination of fake cherry cabinets, orangey tile floors and maroon/orange laminate countertops. It felt like a cave, a very ugly cave, and I disliked it immensely. Now I finally feel genuine affection toward my kitchen!
I’m planning to hang some super awesome lighting above the island and table, and install a backsplash. Still undecided on exactly what the backsplash should be.
The faucet is standard; I’ll maybe probably upgrade it someday, but the single basin sink was a special order. I love that it’s so deep. Didn’t anticipate how hard it would be to clean a sink of this size, but I’m pretty sure my love is strong enough to overcome that flaw. (Me+Sink=LuvForeva)
Here is a mishmash of furniture that won’t be staying in this space. I’m on the hunt for a round table that can seat six that doesn’t cost triple the mortgage. This is proving very impossible to find. Also, the teal curtains were an experiment, and not likely to be hanging around much longer. (Heh heh, see what I did there?)
Now.
I have to show you the problem area of my kitchen.
It is this big blank wall of weirdness:
What the heck am I supposed to do with that? It’s just a big weird wall. I don’t think I can really put any shelving or anything there – it’s only recessed about four inches and too close to the island. I have a few ideas I’m kicking around, but I would LOVE to hear your suggestions.
Currently, you can see I’ve hung a couple of frames there which are obviously too small for the space …
… but if we are Instagram friends, you may recognize them as the handwritten recipes I framed from my grandma’s old recipe book. I will for sure be hanging them elsewhere in the kitchen, as soon as I figure out that wall.
They’re recipes for peanut brittle and caramels. Now I know where I get my sweet tooth!
And speaking of tasty treats, that brings me to the giveaway portion of this post!
By now you’ve surely heard of NatureBox, the subscription-based snack services that delivers wholesome high-quality snacks to your doorstep each month. June 20, 2014 at 7:04 AMOoh, that weird space would be a prime candidate for Command Central! Maybe a cute array of dry-erase boards could occupy the space (one for each person) with reminders or to-do lists or menus for the week…if you’re that organized (I’m not, but a girl can dream, right?).

June 20, 2014 at 7:07 AMA big chalkboard or cork wall could be really fun in that space.

June 20, 2014 at 7:11 AMBig island pineapple looks delicious!!!

June 20, 2014 at 7:12 AMI love the white kitchen! I have a stainless single basin sink that I love too. I clean it with baking soda and vinegar. So far that seems to the trick and it’s easy…plus it’s kind of fun to watch the baking soda bubble when it comes into contact with the vinegar 🙂
Every one of those snacks look delicious. You definitely caught my attention with the pineapple. The guacamole bites sound interesting too.

June 20, 2014 at 7:12 AMI love it! So light and bright! Could you do a few picture ledges in that recessed area? One word of advice: if the glass on the framed recipes isn’t archival quality, you should switch it out. I learned the hard way with a recipe that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. Before I realized it, the writing had faded to where you can barely read it!

June 20, 2014 at 7:33 AMGood to know Amber, thanks! I’ll have to check on that.

June 20, 2014 at 7:12 AMBig Apple Pineapple sounds terribly delicious!

June 20, 2014 at 7:14 AMthat space would be so cool if you used chalkboard paint to create a huge chalkboard. The idea is very 2013/2014 but kids would love it.

June 20, 2014 at 7:14 AMFrench toast granola? Sriracha roasted cashews? Okay, I want to try everything. That stuff looks good!
The wall? I don’t know. I’d be so curious what was behind it? A bit of an odd niche. (I just wonder if it could be made a little deeper or whatever.) You could always put some slender shelves with a lip and display some pretty china or plates/dishes. A big chalk board for a menu/list? Your grandma’s recipes are awesome. A big canvas recipe might be fun, like this: . (Check out the whole house, it’s amazing:
And your kitchen is fabulous. I was helping my brother plan his kitchen and later talking to my husband, he described my style to him like this – have someone go in and set a white bomb off in the room. Yup, that’s pretty much right. So bright and pretty. I’m excited to see the lights you pick and table. (I’m on a hunt for a table and can’t find what I want, regardless of price, but some of those prices, geez Louise!)

June 20, 2014 at 7:14 AMThe first thing I thought of for the wall is a built in plate rack, similar to this one http://www.thistlewoodfarms.com/built-in-plate-rack. As for the Nature Box snacks,
the Taj Mahal Snack Mix looks delicious!

June 20, 2014 at 7:14 AMUse that weird wall to display platters and pretty plates! You could put really shallow shelves in that space with a dowel above each shelf to hold them in.

June 20, 2014 at 7:16 AMBeautiful kitchen Lindsey!! I’m super excited to see the rest of your house! We don’t have enough furniture to fill our new house so it’s basically going to be empty for the next year as we slowly make progress!

June 20, 2014 at 7:16 AMWe had a big blank kitchen wall in one of my childhood homes, and my parents covered it in corkboard — we four kids brought home a ton of art, haha. They kept a box of push pins nearby and stuck school pictures, art class projects, and even swim team ribbons on it. It was a great way to a) have a temporary gallery, b) bring color in, and c) make a long-and-otherwise-useless wall become functional and fun. Plus we got to feel like our masterpieces were sufficiently appreciated before they cycled out for new stuff. I highly recommend it! 🙂

June 20, 2014 at 7:17 AMI think your kitchen is beautiful! The weird space might be a great place for a gallery wall with shelves. I have been eyeing some of Ana White’s shelf designs myself.

June 20, 2014 at 7:17 AMAlso — pineapple rings for days! Sign me up! 🙂

June 20, 2014 at 7:18 AMNew kitchen looks great! I vote for a bulletin board in the space. In our old house I “framed” mine with wine corks, looked great. As for the snacks, Sea salt pop pops look yummy!
Megan Rose
June 20, 2014 at 7:19 AMThere are so many yummy snacks!! I think the Bombay curried cashews look delicious! I need me some of that pineapple too 🙂 I looove your kitchen, it is so beautiful! Gallery wall perhaps for the empty space?
Jill
June 20, 2014 at 7:23 AMThe pistachio power clusters look yummy!
That wall… What about the Ikea wire curtain thing with clips for kid art, across the top, and chalkboard the entire framed out section? We have a chalkboard wall and love it!
mollie d
June 20, 2014 at 7:24 AMPineapple- SO good. What about putting a big hutch there, the 4 inches would make take up less room and you could display your finery and platters in it, can’t tell if it would take up too much room with the seating right there – OR you could cover the wall in stainless steel/cork/chalk and make an organization station for meal planning, kids activities etc. The kitchen is BEAUTIFUL
Jill Mast
June 20, 2014 at 7:25 AMThe cookies look delish. Beautiful kitchen
Tammy
June 20, 2014 at 7:29 AMI would love to try the Big Pineapple!
And for that weird space…I would make that some sort of display area for the creations from your kiddos or a display wall of candid family photos, from almost floor to ceiling.

June 20, 2014 at 7:31 AMI was thinking of mounting (or just painting) a chalkboard for the kids or grocery lists on the odd wall. Bulletin boards and corkboard sound good too. Is there enough room for kids to hang out and color there? Maybe you can hang a bunch of vintage aprons on individual hooks or something.
Laurie V
June 20, 2014 at 7:32 AMJust love your kitchen, so bright & clean. Maybe a collage wall with more recipes, plates, etc.
Would love to try the pineapple!
Meggan
June 20, 2014 at 7:33 AMLove the kitchen! I do love a good chalkboard in a kitchen/place to hang art. I think a pegboard a ‘la Julia Child might be pretty cool though. You could fill the whole space with the pegboard and hang pots/pans, frames, even a chalkboard 😉 A blank slate, how fun.
As far as the naturebox, everything looks great, but the sriracha cashews may be the first thing I’d try!
Kala M.
June 20, 2014 at 7:35 AMI’m thinking Lemon Meringue Waffles, Smokey BBQ Peas, Whole Wheat Raspberry figgy bars. And I totally think my husband would enjoy the Guacamole Bites and Honey Mustard Dippin’ Stix.
I’d say make that wall into a magnetic chalkboard but personally I’m not a huge fan a bunch of chalk dust in the kitchen but I know they are really popular.
Shelley @ Calypso in the Country
June 20, 2014 at 7:35 AMWhat a spacious and beautiful kitchen! Do you happen to know the size of the island? Four stools fit perfectly and was wondering how big you’d have to go to make those work. Also, I would put a display of colorful plates on that wall.
-Shelley
Libby
June 20, 2014 at 7:37 AMI love your kitchen! I agree with a lot of the above comments…plate rack, command center wall, maybe spice rack? Do you have lots of cookbooks…maybe the plate rack type area but store your cook books there instead of plates?
As for the Nature Box snacks…Honey Macadamia Pretzel Pops sound good to me!
Amie
June 20, 2014 at 7:38 AMTry including framed botanicals for colour and contrast to the recipes. You can add a command center too, but I really like the importance you are placing on those family recipes.
Suzan
June 20, 2014 at 7:41 AMPistachio Power Clusters look delicious! Of course, most everything on their site looks good to me!
That wall in the kitchen really is weird! The fact that is recessed is really puzzling. Not deep enough that you could put a long hutch-type piece of furniture and not interfere with island sitting? Wondering if perhaps one of your neighbors has the same kind of thing. You could wander the neighborhood looking for inspiration!
jenny
June 20, 2014 at 7:41 AMThe granola sounds amazing!

June 20, 2014 at 7:42 AMOh my goodness… salted caramel pretzel pops sounds ridiculously amazing! I love pretzels and have to avoid certain malls just so I don’t get sucked in my Auntie Anne’s! I’ve been wanting to try NatureBox forever but have been shy on pulling the trigger. Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

June 20, 2014 at 7:43 AMI love your kitchen! Beautiful!
As for the snacks the Raspberry Figgy Bars look so yummy!

June 20, 2014 at 7:45 AMThose sesame snacks look so tasty! I like the idea someone else had of lining it with cork to mount kid art. You can even use cork tiles if you wanted to bring in some color.

June 20, 2014 at 7:50 AMThe peat praline crunch sounds so good! As do about a dozen another snacks:)

June 20, 2014 at 7:58 AMI LOVE your kitchen!
And all those snacks sound interesting. By I’d choose cranberry macaroon granola as my first choice.

June 20, 2014 at 8:09 AMLooks so beautiful!! The first thing that came to my mind with regards to your 4 inch nook was to get some narrow picture ledge type shelves (like the Ribba Ledge from Ikea) and decorate with plates/platters/etc.
Susan Tuma

June 20, 2014 at 8:17 AMI could go for some granola or chocolate covered almonds! Kitchen looks great, Lindsay!
laura
June 20, 2014 at 8:19 AMI like the corkboard idea or the art collage idea but you could do that on any flat wall. You need to take advantage of those four inches. Put shelves across them full length and put dishes and platters upright to display or maybe a teacup collection or just stacked dishes with maybe some decorative items.
mary
June 20, 2014 at 8:22 AMi know it was such a style fad but i love kitchen chalkboards. i hesitated on mine when i did it several years ago but i had always wanted one and still really like it. my other thoughts where art wires or picture ledges.

June 20, 2014 at 8:32 AMthat big island pineapple looks like it needs to be in my belly. now. 🙂

June 20, 2014 at 8:38 AMI think that space is would probably do well with a grouping of kitchen things — framed things, vintage copper molds, etc. Incidentally, about the framed recipes — do you have those framed with glass that screens out UV light? Otherwise they are likely to fade terribly, especially if they are facing the windows (which it looks like they are) and if your grandma used regular ink instead of ball point.

June 20, 2014 at 8:41 AMYour kitchen is so bright and clean! Love it. I’m so happy for you! I would paint the niche a different color, whatever accent color you are planning on using in the kitchen. Then install slender shelving all the way across to display pretty plates, artwork, anything. Show us whatever you decide to do!
Trina
June 20, 2014 at 8:42 AMI love your kitchen, and I’m excited to see what you do with your niche! As for Nature Box, I’d love to try any of the figgy bars.

June 20, 2014 at 8:47 AMHi, This is beautiful. My first thought for the backspash was glass tiles in seaglass color. Light and bright, but still a bit of color. Maybe mix it with seaglass and clear for a random effect.
I like the idea of plate racks, but thinking a bit differently, a perfect place to display large platters – one on each rung. 🙂
Maureen Corbett-Gentile
June 20, 2014 at 8:49 AMThe peanut butter nom noms sound so yummy, so does the French toast granola!
Paige
June 20, 2014 at 8:51 AMThey all look so yummy! I’d love to try the dark chocolate nom noms!
I’d make that space a command center or a place to display the kids artwork. Beautiful kitchen!

June 20, 2014 at 8:59 AMCongratulations on your beautiful home and kitchen Lindsey! So many things you can place in that nook! I would put floating shelves that way you can always change up the display – from art works, too kitchen collections, the possibilities are endless!

June 20, 2014 at 9:00 AMYou have my mouth watering for the pineapple. I too would like to try that.

June 20, 2014 at 9:02 AMThe choices all look so yummy! I’m in love with coconut and currently 7 months pregnant, so I’d have to try the coconut date energy bites. I need all the energy I can get!
Lisa
June 20, 2014 at 9:04 AMAre you over chalk board paint, because that little wall would be so cute as a massive chalk board! As far as the nature box, I think I would have to say the big island pineapple looks amazing.

June 20, 2014 at 9:08 AMThose peanut butter nomnoms looks awesome! Also, love your kitchen. What’s wrong with the teal drapes? They look great!

June 20, 2014 at 9:08 AMThe french toast granola sounds yummy. If that were my kitchen, I’d do something colorful with that wall to offset the white. Not sure what, maybe a tile design or colorful artwork.
Brandi
June 20, 2014 at 9:09 AMYour kitchen is gorgeous, Lindsey! Congratulations on your new home. I like the direction your headed with the framed recipes. I think a larger grouping of more prints or open shelves would fit that space nicely.
Thanks for the giveaway. I would love to try the figgy bars for myself and my kids or the sriracha cashews for my husband.

June 20, 2014 at 9:10 AMCoffee kettle popcorn! And your kitchen is dreamy!

June 20, 2014 at 9:13 AMWhat a gorgeous kitchen! I second the votes on a command center style area with chalk/cork/white boards and those folder type things that you can hang on walls to sort mail/kids stuff/etc…
As for your giveaway – that’s awesome! I’ve been eyeing NatureBox for a while and really want to try them but don’t want to “waste” my money if I don’t like them. However, the peanut butter nom noms you have up there are swaying me! I also really like the look of their various figgy bar flavors and some of the more savory nut types. Thanks for the chance to win!

June 20, 2014 at 9:15 AMLove the chalkboard idea and bottom bead board. Im lusting after an oval tulip table. They have some with a white and grey marble top. They are pricey though!!! I vote pineapple too.

June 20, 2014 at 9:15 AMBeautiful pics- I love your kitchen and am so happy for y’all! As for the teal drapes- I think they look great and SHOULDN’T be taken down! (Teal is my favorite color) 🙂 Also- the little niche on the backwall could be reserved for kids’ artwork like this …. http://myidealhome.tumblr.com/post/24630542233/artwork-display-via-we-love-diy-crafts I’ve been wanting to do something like this but don’t have the perfect wall- I think you might! Keep us posted!

June 20, 2014 at 9:45 AMFirst thoughts for the wall – chalkboard wall for meaningful quotes, menus, to-do lists, messages, kids artistic expressions, etc; a gallery wall with an accent color behind and shelves for family photos, kids artwork, your framed recipes, etc; travel wall with a hugh map that shows where you’ve been with your family. Just search Pinterest, there are a million ideas out there.
Snacks, the pineapple for sure, sweet, chewy. My mouth is watering just thinking about some.
Laurel
June 20, 2014 at 9:47 AMBig empty wall would be a perfect command center. Four kids need a lot of managing! I think it’s lovely and that the curtains should stay. Mango fruit chews are calling my name. And also the nom noms. And several other items, but I’ll stop there.

June 20, 2014 at 9:53 AMPEANUT BUTTER NOM NOMS!Oh I want to try those!
As for the wall. I love how you framed the recipes. I wonder if you have vintage pics of grandma (and other family members) that you could print in black and white or sepia tone and frame in the same manner. In our previous house I had a family photo wall in the dining room. We “ate with family” every night. (We didn’t talk to the pictures ;-), but it did spur conversations with our kids and family history.) Neat and modern display with old and vintage looking photos. Might look kinda neat!
I was also considering all the other comments about children’s artwork. I am not a fan of clutter, but when my kids were a bit younger I had purchased a couple of frames for them to put their most prized piece in. You can purchase these easy to change frames at Pottery Barn (I think). Maybe put a few of those there. It would bring a pop of color and a sense of pride.
Rachel McClintock
June 20, 2014 at 9:55 AMYou should wall paper the inserted wall and put like a little organization station there with some basic art. Maybe even those recipes! It would definitely stick out, and you wouldn’t have to pick such a bold print!
MarciaMarcia
June 20, 2014 at 9:58 AMI like T. Hunter’s idea of the plate rack. While I love the chalkboard, corkboard ideas, too…the plate rack looks like the best fit…and framed recipes or cookbooks or antique platters would fit in just perfectly! I want some granola!
Lindsay
June 20, 2014 at 10:03 AMChalkboard wall would be so fun! And you can could also make it magnetic so you can hang stuff as well.
The Dark Cocoa non noms sound yum!
Katie
June 20, 2014 at 10:04 AMSmoky BBQ peas. I like to live on the edge. You could put really slim shelving, like a grid, out of stained wood. But I also like the wallpaper idea, or you could do starched fabric.
Codie Rowland
June 20, 2014 at 10:04 AMI would hang shallow photo ledges and place photos or cookbooks along that wall:)
Trish
June 20, 2014 at 10:11 AMFor the recessed wall you could use the Ikea picture shelves and make a rotating gallery wall of kids art, plates, pictures ect. They aren’t very deep so they shouldn’t interfere with walking by. I also see that recessed part painted a diff. colour too. Good luck!

June 20, 2014 at 10:39 AMThe Cinnamon Swirl Kettle Kernels are blowing my mind. Dude. They’re like corn nuts made classy… and even more delicious. (Who knew that was possible? Magic.)

June 20, 2014 at 10:47 AMI love the idea of putting a corkboard/magnetic wall in that space!
The guacamole bites and the roasted kettle kernels have peaked my interest!
Melanie H.
June 20, 2014 at 10:48 AMThere are way too many snacks to choose from! I’d have to say that salted caramel pretzel pops were the first to make me pause and wish I had some RIGHT NOW. Although the lemon tea biscuits look both yummy and adorable, so they’re a strong contender. 🙂
Your new kitchen looks amazing! That shallow nook is a tricky challenge… it’s just so much and so little space at the same time. Perhaps something like a shelf with decorative bottles of spices and fancy flavored oils and such might take up a small section of it? A magnetic whiteboard or chalkboard? Pocket-like shelves for cookbooks to be displayed facing forward? Good luck, and it will be fun to see what you do with it!
valerie mahaffy
June 20, 2014 at 10:50 AMHello!
Yes….do shelves! Shallow shelves would be awesome for spice bottles; leaning pictures to make a gallery; coffee mug display….. I think it would look GREAT!

June 20, 2014 at 10:52 AMI think that space is begging to be a “Kids’ Art Wall.” With a stainless steel refrigerator you’re not going to be hanging artwork on it- plus it can look so cluttered after a couple of weeks of school. That nook is perfect for incorporating some of the features they used in this home: http://www.roomzaar.com/rate-my-space/Other-Spaces/Kids-Art-Center/detail.esi?oid=24610794&save=save If you need a Command Center you can put it at the top and still do an art wall at the bottom where the kids can eventually hang their own artwork as they bring it home. Tip: Scan or take a digital picture of the art or painting, or of the child proudly holding the art and make a photo book for each child every year- it saves on storage, clears clutter, and they’ll always have a copy of their artwork to keep since school art paper is not archival and becomes brittle and falls apart over the years.

June 20, 2014 at 10:58 AMI would love to see a gallery style wall of whatever– plates, cookware, frames, ceiling medallions… Anything fun and colorful. And maybe a fancy chalkboard in the center for practicality
Only maybe though.
Also… Yum!

June 20, 2014 at 11:09 AMLike your kitchen – its bright and cherry. Consider a chalk / magnet board, that way you have a place for those cherished recipes and you can write down your weekly list or menu

June 20, 2014 at 11:20 AMCall me weird…but I don’t hate the teal drapes! I think they are a bit different than what most people do in a white kitchen. But that’s just me. I love your kitchen so much…now I need a new one! And if you hate the wall being recessed, an idea might be to fill in with raw wood planks. Gives some texture to your room and could make the wall flush.
If I were to choose a snack, it would totally be the Pumpkin Seed Praline! Yum Yum! I miss Fall!!!

June 20, 2014 at 11:24 AMI was going to pick something sweet, but hello, cheddar potato fries.
And having just picked up a picture ledge shelf at ikea yesterday, that’s my suggestion. A whole bunch of pictures and whatnot on ledges.

June 20, 2014 at 11:27 AMThe two things that have caught my eye are the Sea Salt Pop Pops and the Baked Sweet Potato Fries!
Lynne
June 20, 2014 at 11:27 AMI would use the wall space to put up shallow shelves that have a groove for dishes. Or the Ikea shelves designed to hold photo frames. Then you can have a gallery of photos, recipes, whatever you wish to put in the frames.
Victoria
June 20, 2014 at 11:39 AMWowwee! Your kitchen is to die for. Mine is still builder grade beige with dark cabinets. So many good choice from the NatureBox collection and many of then gluten free! I would have to go with the Mighty Mix because there are too many choices!

June 20, 2014 at 11:48 AMWhat a beautiful kitchen! I’ve always loved white cabinets, too. Mine are a cinnamon maple, which isn’t bad except for the fact that I don’t really like the door style either – which is why I haven’t bothered to paint them. Also, my countertops are green laminate. I’m not a countertop snob – I don’t really mind the fact that they’re laminate. What I really hate is that they’re green – my second least favorite color.
I love your big blank wall of weirdness. If it were in my kitchen, I’d build in some bookshelves for my cookbooks – 9-10 inches deep (so it would extend 5-6 inches beyond the wall) and about 3 feet high. Above that, I’d probably hang a collection of blue and white porcelain plates or build narrower shelves to display other collectibles. I’m obsessed with blue bottles, so I might use the narrow shelves to display them there. I’d use museum putty to prevent them from being accidentally knocked off the shelves. (I’ve given this idea a lot of thought because I have a partition wall in my kitchen, and this is what I plan to do with it.)
I think a big black chalkboard for menus or shopping lists would look great in your kitchen. You could center it on the wall and surround it with your framed recipes in a grouping. I think this would be great with the cookbook shelves – one central place for your recipes and menus.

June 20, 2014 at 11:51 AMArt. You could find an amazing and unique piece of art for that space. It would have to be huge. I love how uncluttered your kitchen looks and a command station…(which I love to have!)…is never easy to keep clutter-free. I’d love to see an oversized world map on that wall, whitewashed/vintag-ie.
Good luck!
Allison D
June 20, 2014 at 11:51 AMAll of those snacks look amazing but the mini medjools caught my eye right off the bat. I think that are could be great for a home command center.
Heather
June 20, 2014 at 12:19 PMI’d look at doing large photo canvases of your children on the wall for some color (or done in black/white or sepia). Everything else will probably tend to get a bit messy….at least it would in my house. The pictures would add personality, keep it neat, and not stick out so far that someone would run into them (I’d hope).
Jane
June 20, 2014 at 12:22 PMThat is the perfect space for a food pantry. You will be able to see all your cans and boxes at a glance. You could frame it and put large doors on it with pictures or whatever you want firmly attached to the front.

June 20, 2014 at 12:24 PMBeautiful kitchen! As for the awkward wall, I’d either do command central with a corkboard, calendar and maybe some chalkboard OR picture ledges for family photos, plates, mementos, etc. Good luck!
Oh and the peanut butter Nom-Noms are calling my name.

June 20, 2014 at 12:26 PMI have been bouncing around the idea of trying Nature Box for a while. Everything looks so great! I think my first choice would be the guacamole bites. They just look yummy! Thanks for this great opportunity.
Since everyone else is chiming in on the space, what about doing an eclectic gallery wall of things that make you smile? I have started one in my kitchen and it includes artwork by my kiddos, a couple of pieces that my mom had in her kitchen and some pieces that I have picked up while traveling. I spend so much time in my kitchen I want to be happy while I am there.
Congrats on the new place!
Melissa
June 20, 2014 at 12:45 PMNature box sounds awesome, I would love to try the peanut butter nom noms!
Love the kitchen! I’m in a cave-like kitchen, loving your bright white. I would turn that “opportunity” wall into a command center – chalkboard, corkboard, calendar, menu. Congrats on the new house!
Ashley

June 20, 2014 at 12:47 PMIt’s really just screaming for a huge flat screen TV.

June 20, 2014 at 12:50 PMI also agree with those who suggest shallow shelves for photos, plates, sentimental items. You do have to dust them, but they make cooking fun. But, by all means, paint the niche a fun color that pops. I’d do the back splash a nice white subway tile, though (very classy). So nice that you can personalize. Congrats!

June 20, 2014 at 1:09 PMGreat giveaway! To many good options to choose from!!

June 20, 2014 at 1:16 PMI have friends that have a corkboard/bulliten board as big as your ‘weird space’ – yes, THAT big, in their kitchen. It is awesome. As for a backsplash, have you considered what Sawdust & Embryo’s does . . . ? Pretty cool . . . http://www.sawdustandembryos.com/2013/02/out-with-old-painting-backsplash.html

June 20, 2014 at 1:19 PMHey Lindsey! Congrats on the new house The kitchen is beautiful cant wait to see the rest 🙂 I liked the idea of painting it a different color (maybe the teal color from the drapes, (if you change your mind and keep them) Or even a grey – neutral color to add some depth. I personally don’t like the dust/mess that comes with chalk/dry erase boards. Love all the shelve ideas! Could even change things up from season to season. Have to say though my kids loved the wall we had in our kitchen to display their ‘art’ etc.
I’m drooling over the choices in the nature box maybe the blueberry almonds or the Salted Caramel Pretzel Pops yum Thanks for all you do for us
Lisa
June 20, 2014 at 1:37 PMOMG! One of everything! But if I had to choose the Everything Bagel Stix sound awesome. I love your idea of framing those recipes – I have a few from my Grandmother I’ll have to do.
Suzanne
June 20, 2014 at 1:50 PMLove the new kitchen! I am a long, long time reader–Congrats on your move. I have a huge chalkboard–it is pinterest-y (before that was even a thing) and beautiful, but a big mess. Since you have such calm, serene kitchen I would hate to see you have the big pile of chalk dust that we do! Same goes for the command center–if you have a space to put it in a mudroom or entryway, you could leave this spot for something pretty!! I would opt for an over-sized piece of good art or two big wall panels like these: . IT may also be good to do a graphic wallpaper just in the niche. Thanks for sharing your own better after!
Courtney
June 20, 2014 at 2:02 PMNo contest — the salted caramel pretzel pops FOR SURE.
Whitney P
June 20, 2014 at 2:05 PMBeautiful kitchen! So my style! Neutral and empty. I would put a giant piece of pop art there with an art light shining on it. Maybe Lora Zombie’s Big Bang Kiss painting. Also those big island pineapples look fab!!
Jamie P.
June 20, 2014 at 2:08 PMI’d love to try the pineapple slices!
And you should do horizontal stripes in that alcove and put up some fun canvas prints. They could be your pop of color in the white kitchen.

June 20, 2014 at 2:23 PMA wall of reclaimed wood looking picture ledges from floor to ceiling. Same depth as the recess. Then you could use it for kiddos artwork, have a couple chalkboards, some plates… the sky’s the limits!

June 20, 2014 at 2:35 PMI absolutely LOVE your kitchen! I’ve always wanted a bright white kitchen just like that.
If i had to pick from NatureBox Snacks it would be either the Sweet Blueberry Almonds or the Yogurt Dipped Pretzels.

June 20, 2014 at 2:38 PMFirst of all your kitchen is gorgeous! I love. Maybe a subtle pop of color for your backsplash would be fun? And you’re right, that wall is kinda awk. Finding a large piece of art there could be challenging, but maybe you could do a food themed gallery wall?! That just got me excited so you should probably consider that 🙂
So many yummy snacks to choose from! I also have a sweet tooth and those Cocoa Waffle Wafers are sounding pretty good!

June 20, 2014 at 2:51 PMPear praline crunch sounds yummy.
Good luck with your wall.
Karen
June 20, 2014 at 2:52 PMWow!!!! Your kitchen is gorgeous. It is actually a lot like mine only wider (ours wouldn’t fit an island). I think you should either put a big mirror in the space or a large vinyl verse. My in-laws did the “Great is thy faithfulness Lord unto me” on their dining room wall, and it fills a space at least 4 x 4 ft.
Dawn
June 20, 2014 at 2:59 PMThe kitchen is beautiful. And I love the framed, hand-written recipes from your grandmother idea! As for the wall, what would you do if it there wasn’t an alcove, i.e flat? I think the builder made that area so that if art were hung there, it wouldn’t get knocked around in a high traffic area. While the command center idea makes sense, you’re going to be looking at it a lot, so something cleaner and less cluttered might be more enjoyable–like your framed recipes. What if the recipes were enlarged to fill the space so that the alcove became a way to focus the attention on them? Or perhaps it’s art you enjoy that fills the space more? Another option could be putting in mini-shelves that can support a series of framed art that you can change over time as you wish. I’ve made some narrow (2-3″ wide) support shelves from crown molding that can support picture frames. I look forward to seeing what you decide!

June 20, 2014 at 3:20 PMChalkboard wall!!! I know I saw another blogger with a plain wall and to fill the space she took everyday kitchen items, spraypainted them all the same color and hung them all over the space. It looked really cool. Darn it, can’t remember where I saw it though.
Anyway, I think if I got a box from NatureBox (wow that would be soooo cool) I would love to try the mango almond bite thingys. They just look yummy. Although the apple pie ones look good too…

June 20, 2014 at 3:28 PMI think that wall would look amazing with some shelves done kind of like a giant shadow boxes… different distances apart, dividing the spaces into boxes..can you picture what I mean? I wish you could see inside my head but it’s probably better you can’t cuz I haven’t cleaned there in a little while..haaaa But seriously, just google “shadow box” and invision a larger version. You could use one large section for a bulletin/chalk board (or flat screen TV), and other various size ones for mason jars filled with chocolate chips, cupcake sprinkles, small candies or other cooking ingrediets, pretty spice jars or some cute curios in various heights, apothacary jars, your framed recipes, kids photos, etc… the possibilities are endless. Like a giant 3D collage.

June 20, 2014 at 3:35 PMThe Big pineapple look delicious! Love your kitchen! Go with the sea glass backsplash and paint the wall and the inside of the hutch/desk a complimentary color. Move the hutch/desk to that wall. (I suppose it’s free-standing?)

June 20, 2014 at 3:55 PMAny of the figgy bars or the sticks n’ stones look yummy. As for the wall, setting up a family command center there if you don’t have another area for that might be useful. June 20, 2014 at 5:03 PMDepending on how much you can deal with the clutter, the command center sounds good. However, you could also paint the nook a coordinating color (love those curtains – really), hang old pie tins, and other kitchen items, put some scattered small shelves for vintage S&P shakers, tea pots, etc. Pack a sign or two in, take a small table, cut out one side and attach it to the wall with just two of the legs on the floor, get a cheap tray from dollar store and paint with chalkboard paint for notes, reminders, etc. Go wild, girl!
I’m looking at the Coconut Date Energy Bites, because I like Coconut, Dates and Energy! Could use all three!

Sandy
June 20, 2014 at 8:17 PMI would put 2 or 3 picture ledges on that wall and do a gallery wall of art and family photos. Or…since it is slightly recessed, you could string wires across that area and use clips to hang art and photos that could be easily changed whenever the mood strikes.

June 21, 2014 at 9:57 AMmmmm… cranberry almond bites, i think. They look fabulous! That wall is a conundrum, for sure. June 21, 2014 at 11:51 AMCoffee popcorn! Gotta try it!
I’ve been hoping for a little peek into your new home! Your new kitchen is LOVELY! A patterned (herringbone?) white subway tile backsplash would be very nice. That funny little space? I like the idea of a chalkboard/cork/magnetic board HOWEVER, even though I don’t know you that well, from what I can tell from your blog, you wouldn’t like the clutter/mess that happens with that idea. But I love the plate rack idea from Thistlewood Farm – it’s so Martha. 🙂 And useful. It would make the wall look like it had purpose. You could do anything you want with the background. Different paint color, wallpaper, fancy painted words, whatever. But if you want to win big with your kids – do a big tile falling water feature – hahaha! Good luck!!!!

I love you site. You are seriously funny. That means you are smart too. Your kitchen is great. You could do the cork board, which is always great, but it will be “visually busy”, and that can be tiring. You could also hang a really big piece of art.
Love the giveaway. I would like to try the curried cashews. Thanks!

Sarah
June 22, 2014 at 10:45 AMOMG! I absolutely love what you’ve done with the recipes from your Grandmother. I have my Grandmother’s old spiral note book with all her recipes in my fire safe. But I think that’s brilliant way to showcase them.
I love anything savory esp, potatoes so going to have to say the Baked Cheddar Potato Fries.

June 23, 2014 at 4:42 AMI haven’t read all the comments, but I immediately had a much stranger idea for that wall than the first few comments I did read. Place hooks up at the top, and hang fishing line from each. Then tie several air plants onto each piece of line so that they all hang vertically. You could then pretty easily pull the fishing line off of the hooks, and soak the plants in water monthly or so to keep them alive and green. have fun with whatever you decide!

June 23, 2014 at 5:05 AMI’d like to try the baked cheddar potato fries!

June 23, 2014 at 11:35 AMP.s. i think some that space could be utilized for style and function by using gutter shelves or picture ledges to display pictures, artwork, cook books, calendars or menus, a chalk board, etc. Something like : http://www.pinterest.com/pin/56787645276232488/
Danielle
June 23, 2014 at 11:45 AMPear Praline Crunch!!!!! Holy Guaco that looks so good!

June 23, 2014 at 11:57 AMAnd about your wacky wall… Hang vintage clothes lines (like these-http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/161327464036?lpid=82 I think you could get a subtle red/coral and turquoise thing going on as an accent that would be awesome) across and use cute clothes pins to put up more handwritten recipes and artwork. That might be kind of cluttery though, so another option would be a gallery wall like this http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/a2/40/e2/a240e29aebb7ca5d2b5e5c7859bfed7c.jpg

June 23, 2014 at 12:17 PMLove Love!! your new kitchen
How about some narrow sliding (or stationery) ‘barn doors’?
https://www.google.com/search?q=barn+doors+interior&safe=active&client=firefox-a&hs=46V&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=hnyoU9uBIoOFogS47YLQDQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=939&bih=564#channel=sb&q=barn+doors+pantry+interior&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=active&tbm=isch
Or if nothing else, could drywall it over? But I’m sure you’ll find something to make it fabulous. 😉

Also, super jealous of your white cabinets. We’re buying a new build and white was too many upgrades up so we went with standard and plans to paint them after the kid beat them up for a few years.

June 23, 2014 at 1:06 PMI am all for putting a few shelves in the sort-of nook! Even if they’re shallow, they’ll be perfect for a kitchen because you can fill them with fancy oils and spice jars, cookbooks, your lovely framed recipes, and all manner of cute kitchen gadgets. If that’s your jam. If not, the command center is an awesome idea, too. So, how do you like your sink? I’ve been afraid of giant farmhouse sinks because I am a traditionalist at heart and was raised to wash dishes on one side and rinse on the other. But then I realized, I have never, in the 7 years I’ve been a homeowner, used my sink that way. Ever. So, perhaps a change is in order? And oh yeah, baked cheddar potato fries sound like HEAVEN. Sent to my door? There’s not even a word to describe the ecstasy.

June 23, 2014 at 3:53 PMThe salted caramel pretzel pops sound sooooo good!
I’d probably do picture shelves in that big open space. Orrrrr you could use it as display space, similar to a picture shelf but rows of glassware or glass canisters of food or something small that you collect?
sandra sanford
June 23, 2014 at 5:21 PMThe snacks all look wonderful but the pineapple would be my first choice.

June 23, 2014 at 6:24 PMCongratulations on the new house! The kitchen is gorgeous. Love the granite, too. On your “weird wall” could you put some shallow shelves and some plate rail molding so you could display plates and platters and art work together? I have seen it done and could send you pictures if you are interested. Have fun decorating the new house! Erin
tabitha

June 24, 2014 at 7:01 AMabsolutely beautiful kitchen!!! painting my cabinets white was the first thing I did when we first moved into our new house, and even though I have to clean the ALL THE TIME, I still love them.
What about painting that wall alcove with magnetic paint and letting your kids post art work and stuff there?
As far as the give away, with two toddlers we are snacking family, so the Edamamix sounds great!
Alli

June 24, 2014 at 2:15 PMFor the wall I would totally paint the recessed part a fun color and then do a shelf gallery wall with mostly black and white prints/frames. Totally easy to change up and easy to do!
Something kinda like this http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a5tYBhQTViI/UmbUofh877I/AAAAAAAAG74/5QKFTXjiFm0/s1600/ledge-shelf-gallery-wall.jpg

June 24, 2014 at 11:36 PMOhh, I know, I know! (As I raise my hand excitedly) Do a cool combo wall with cork, chalkboard, whiteboard and magnetic area! It’ll be a fun way to post lists, the kids’ artwork, photos, etc. and a fun place for them to”write on the wall”. You can make it all white, black and white or whatever combo will suit your decor best. My daughter is so hands on, she has an area in her own room, much like this so she WON’T leave tape, tack holes, markers… all over the house!
Elizabeth
June 25, 2014 at 12:09 AMThat big island pineapple looks soooo good, I loved dried pineapple. Those peanut butter nom noms look good too. Great, now I’m hungry and it’s 12:08am!

June 25, 2014 at 7:59 AMCan I just start by saying I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR KITCHEN!! I love the white!, the counter tops, sink, and the handles on the cabinets and drawers ahhhh! As for the wall- I think something along the lines of a magnet wall, chalkboard or white board. I would love to try the black and white granola! But it all looks amazing.
Rebecca
June 25, 2014 at 4:54 PMLove the kitchen! I’d probably make the recessed wall into a command center with a mail catch, key holder, chalkboard, grocery list.

June 26, 2014 at 10:35 AMI would say a really big piece of art. Would make a great statement. Or grouping of 4-6 frames. Could put in picture of family, cute font designs of family recipes, etc. So much opportunity for fun here but I think color needs to come in somehow. Really nice kitchen!
