Today we’re wrapping up the best of the best of Better After’s 2015. If you missed the first half, don’t worry your pretty little head; you can find them all right here.
One of my very favorites from July was undoubtedly this retro home renovation from Better After reader Gwen.
If that little yellow gate doesn’t make your heart pitter-pat, check your pulse my friend. Hit the link above to take a peek inside!
In August we met the talented Amanda at Ferpie & Fray.
I would highlight all of her work if I could, she’s just so good! She has a gift for making things look timeless and trendy at the same time. This coral chest makeover and more are available for your viewing pleasure right here.
September brought us this playful playroom makeover by Jennifer at Dear Lillie.
Jennifer is another ultra-talented gal and every room of her home is perfection. I’d move in a heartbeat. If she ever decides to sell her house, I call first dibs. I don’t even know what state she lives in, but I don’t care.
One of my favorite makeovers in October was from one of my favorite people, my dear friend Denise.
Her living room makeover is legendary, and click the link to see her equally awe-inspiring dining room makeover too!
November started a dresser revolution thanks to this makeover from Brooke at Start at Home.
Dressers everywhere began to realize that they still had much to offer, even with broken drawers or *gasp!* no drawers at all!
And so recent that you probably remember it like it was yesterday, comes my favorite from December, this dining room makeover from Better After reader Leatha.
It’s that cow. Gets me every time. Plus the whole room looks fabulous and I’m pretty darn impressed by that hand-crafted table too.
So that was 2015! What do you hope to see more of in 2016? Or less of? It’s always so interesting to me to see trends cycle through over time. What can stay around forever as long as you’re concerned, and what needs to GO already?
Here what has my vote:
Stick around:
- subway tile
- white kitchens
- gallery walls
- succulents
- wallpaper
- stripes
Adios:
- shabby chic
- woodland creatures: owls, foxes, squirrels (Still cute in a nursery though)
- vinyl lettering
- marsala
- mason jars
- wood pallets
But hey, that’s just my opinion. If you want to deck out your marsala-soaked house in mason jars and hedgehogs, you go girl. Never let trends (or bloggers, or bossy Buzzfeed articles) dictate what you love or don’t love! It’s always good to grow and try new things and refine your taste, but also don’t forget to just do what you like. Trends come and go so quickly anymore that it’s impossible (and expensive!) to try and keep up. Our homes aren’t disposable – our style shouldn’t be either.
So be happy being you! That’s the moral of my soapbox. (I hope it made sense. I was only interrupted like 200 times trying to write this. #terroristtoddlerproblems)

January 6, 2016 at 6:30 AMNice to look back over the year of your favourite posts! I’m tired of pallets, mason jars & chalkboard walls (except in a child’s playroom).
Looking forward to another year of reading your blog!

January 6, 2016 at 1:29 PMI’m so glad you’re doing this recap because I somehow missed a few of these – maybe when I was out of town a few times in the summer? I love Gwen’s house, and Jennifer’s playroom is adorable! (I’m afraid she’s going to miss those ceiling fans, though, ugly as they were. My mom has an attic room, and it’s hot year-round.)
As for trends, I wouldn’t mind saying “Adios” to EAT signs in kitchens. I’ve never understood why people needed signs to remind them to do that. 😉

January 6, 2016 at 3:07 PMHaha! ME TOO! I just feel like they’re so bossy. EAT. WASH. DREAM. INSPIRE. Leave me alone already!!

January 6, 2016 at 3:02 PMI would like bid adieu to chevrons. Enough already. And I agree about the EAT signs. In fact, almost all signs could go away and I would survive nicely.
I still like pallets, mason jars and woodland creatures! I looked at a site for my wedding this year and found a farm which had all kinds of mason jars and old pick-ups and things to make your photos look vintage-y. I was willing to make my guests suffer outdoors in the Sacramento summer heat since they could dress in jeans and cowboy boots. Then I saw that the facilities were something like “luxury portable toilets” and nixed it. “Remember Elaine’s wedding with those big port-a-potties?” I didn’t want to be remembered for that. 🙂

January 6, 2016 at 3:09 PMI think that would still be so cute for a wedding! I think with weddings and children’s rooms anything goes! But now I’m kind of curious to see a ‘luxury portable toilet.’ I’d google it, but I’m too afraid …

January 6, 2016 at 6:14 PMAs much as I love a good chevron, I too agree that their best days are now past. I sort of feel the same about subway tile and arabesque tile. Instead of standard subway tile though we should embrace using the larger versions for a new take on the trend. White kitchens are a new love of mine and I don’t think they’ll ever go out of style. Much like inflatable Santa’s.

January 6, 2016 at 8:32 PMI hardly ever comment, but I have to say how much I love your blog and your sense of humor! Thanks for a great round! I would keep stripes, quatrefoil, mixed metallics, and words/signage in decor. I’m ready to nix greys, subway tile, chalkboard everything, and woodland creatures. I have enough wild animals between my children and dogs.

January 7, 2016 at 2:56 PMI’m so over patterns, textures, colors, and stuff. I want white or black and nothing else. Give me smooth blank surfaces. There should be nothing on the walls. Let’s go minimalist for a month…then we will love everything again!!! 🙂

January 8, 2016 at 9:46 PMI completely agree with your adios list! I would LOVE to see shabby chic end its tenure.

January 13, 2016 at 3:44 PMI *love* your blog, and I can’t say that there’s anything that I am over looking at on it. Which is not to say that I would incorporate everything into my own house, just that your blog always highlights awesome fresh ways of seeing even tired tropes of decorating. With that said, have never been able to muster enthusiasm for chalkboard areas, or “dream, inspire, love, eat” or other directive (vinyl especially) crapola. I still find grey, navy, subway tile, chevons, white kitchens, painted campaign furniture and ugly lamp contests enthralling!
