Whenever anyone dares to paint over wood furniture, you can bet that a horrified crowd of internet commenters will follow.
“You’ve ruined it!” they’ll wail.
“It was SO MUCH better before!” they’ll sputter.
“I am so LIVID WITH RAGE that you’d cover up that natural wood grain that I’m literally shaking as I angrily type!” they’ll howl.
Well, consider this:
What if …
what if …
that natural wood grain …
happened to look like …
like …
… a butt?
No amount of loving restoration is going to fix that. Luckily, Amanda came along and worked her magic with a pitch black shade of milk paint, and it looks so much more dignified now.
Now the focus is on the lovely detailing and ladylike legs and totally not on the other thing. Take a peek at the adorable inside on Ferpie and Fray.
But wait! There is literally more! Amanda has spread her talents to some other lovely-but-lacking furniture, like this sweet but plain little desk. Unfortunately, there are no apparent body parts in the grain, but I’m sure if you looked hard enough you could find something. If you’re into that.
So lovely! Current and timeless, I’d say. The coral color accents the wood legs beautifully. See more at Ferpie and Fray.
And hold on to your britches, because I have EVEN MORE from Amanda. Another little desk got the two-toned treatment, and it’s so sweet that I think I just lost a tooth.
Aren’t those knobs the best? Wonderful talent Amanda! I’m inspired to hit up the thrift-store today. I haven’t painted furniture in a while, but I’m feeling the itch!
See it at Ferpie and Fray and be sure to scroll down to the bottom for a peek inside. Spoiler alert: deer!

August 4, 2015 at 9:52 AMThat butt! I love it. I also cracked myself up turning the phrase, “lovely-but-lacking” into “lovely, butt-lacking” HAHAHA!

August 4, 2015 at 10:27 AMWOW! Love the grey desk. Going to have to keep my eyes out for something like that – the color combo and knobs would look amazing in my guest room.

August 4, 2015 at 4:36 PMOkay, I’ll concede that milk paint is preferable to wood grain that looks like a butt. I’m afraid that, when I see items half stained and half painted, though, my first thought is that they ran out of paint. Very nice – just unfinished.

August 5, 2015 at 6:47 AMLindsey! You are so funny! It’s always good to de-butt a piece of furniture. I love her work.

August 5, 2015 at 9:25 AMWow, that really did look like a butt. Nice cover-up! All these pieces are wonderfully done!
I really don’t care if people want to paint wood furniture, I have many painted pieces myself. It’s when they use the excuse, “Well, I would have refinished it but it was in too bad of shape!” I have to say, I’ve seen some pretty far gone pieces restored beautifully to almost new condition. How ’bout just admit that you wanted to paint it and leave it at that. Its your furniture, it shouldn’t matter what other people who prefer wood grain think.

August 5, 2015 at 10:17 AMI like the half-painted/half-stained look and didn’t even think about it being unfinished, but everyone sees things differently. My husband is one of those “don’t paint wood” fanatics. I have a few pieces I would like to paint after seeing your posts, including one we have had in storage for the 40 years we have been married, but since it came from his family I guess I have to honor his wishes! LOL.

August 5, 2016 at 6:35 AMI just saw this on Pinterest and couldn’t believe it. I know that this is an old post but I found the same exact little desk at a yard sale a few years ago and refinished it (the last one that is gray and wood) I two toned mine! I stained the top and the drawer face, then painted the rest black. Looks awesome. Can’t believe there is another little desk out there that is the same!
