Movin’ On Up

Straight off the set of a ’70s sitcom, this chair and it’s grungy fabric had clearly seen lots of Good Times and Happy Days. But if Dena wanted to keep it All In The Family, that crusty velvet had to go.  (I would insert a joke about M*A*S*H here, but I never actually watched that show.  That theme song has to be the most depressing sound in human history.  I can’t lunge for the mute button fast enough). (Ok, I just googled it and learned that the name of the song is – no joke – Suicide Is Painless.  Does it really say that in the song somewhere? I wouldn’t know. I’ve never made it past the first eight notes).

AAAAAnyway, the point is, this cute little cube chair deserved better. Dena took it back to its funkadelic roots with a fabulous floral, and you should check out her blog Hearts and Sharts to see it in its heyday on The Jefferson’s!

Just saw your post on Fb and had to switch over to comment on this. (Love reupholstery projects!) I am tempted to say that the after chair is not even the same one as the before chair–they look so different. Love the update.

Great chair! Yes – the song really does say “Suicide is Painless” – that’s the chorus. Very depressing song, for sure. In the Movie “MASH” the theme song has words and is sung.

You always crack me up – and inspire me! Gorgeous chair.

And yes, I played that song on the piano as a teenager (yep, fun kid I was), and some of the lyrics are, “I realize and now can see – that suicide is painless. It brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please.” That’s not even the most depressing part. Bizarre.

Ok that is the worst name of a blog I have ever seen. I had to go the site because I thought it must have been a joke. It’s actually a nice site.

Awesome update…funny thing about MASH…the show lasted longer than the actual war. And yes, those are the words in the song.

OK, that chair is amazing. Absolutely love it. I was sort of skimming the post and all of a sudden I looked at the picture and say the watermark and went, “Does that say Hearts and Sharts”? Yeah. Best blog name ever. Ever.

Absolutely, 100% agree about the M*A*S*H song. I’m told that the show is good. I’ll probably never know, because the song makes me groan audibly. Whose idea WAS that?!?

Thanks for your blog. I love how your posts are short and sweet and funny. 🙂 Very inspiring. I visit all the time.

I was looking at the before (I like to surprise myself with the afters) and was thinking, “That chair’s got good bones.” Then I scrolled down and saw the after. It was a shock to the system how amazingly awesome it turned out!

The floral fabric looks almost exactly like the wallpaper in our kitchen when I was a kid in the 70’s.

Oh jeez, MASH. I can’t watch that show. Have you heard about the last episode? I have only ever heard a synopsis, and even that depresses the crap out of me.

Hey, if you saw the movie on which the M*A*S*H series was based, you’d get the theme music and the lyrics. The only actor in the movie who made the TV transition was Radar (Gary Burghoff). That sucker had a cast of stars – Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye), Elliott Gould (Trapper), Robert Duvall (Frank), Sally Kellerman (Hot Lips), Rene Auberjonois (Father Mulcahy), Tom Skerrit (Duke) – and was directed by Robert Altman. The whole Suicide is Painless thing came from when the unit’s dentist was depressed because he was having performance issues with women and wanted to kill himself, so Hawkeye and Trapper threw him a huge going away banquet at which the song was sung, slipped him a fake poison as he lay in his coffin ready to go, and had one of the nurses volunteer in advance to jump in the coffin after everyone else departed to “cure” him, which she did. It’s a joke and not meant to be depressing. War is hell, y’know.
