Automotivated

If you follow me on instagram (and you totally should.  I mean, it’s all kinds of excitement over there.  Ok, it’s mostly baby pictures) but anyway, IF you do, you may have seen that my little guy went to the ER Sunday night. So I thought I’d give a quick update here because several readers have asked how he’s doing.  So sweet.

Tyce had a little fever on Sunday night, and they say to take infants straight to the ER if it gets over 100.4, so that’s what we did. It actually got quite a bit higher than that. Scary, but I figured they’d give him some Motrin and keep an eye on him for a couple hours and that would be it.

Eight hours later, after getting an IV, two catheters, three chest x-rays, and a freaking SPINAL TAP, he was finally released with a diagnosis of the flu. They probed and poked my poor baby in every possible place and then some.  It was horrible. They just have to be extremely cautious with the little ones, and make sure there’s not a chance that they missed something.  So we were very happy and relieved that it wasn’t anything worse, and we got to take him home that night.  And now he’s resting up, and other than being a major cranky-pants, he seems to be 100% better already.  With hopefully no memories of any of it!

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks so much for all the care and concern and prayers we received from my wonderful interfriends during the whole ordeal.  Thank you!!!

And now, a wonderful dresser redo.  And I’m not just saying that as an easy segue.  It truly is fabulous, and so creative!  Perfect for anyone who has a thing for antique cars. From the always inspiring Sarah at Funcycled.

Ahh! No fun when they do that to your baby. We had to take our daughter into the ER for a fever when she was 10 days old, and same thing. Poked and prodded, and they finally decided it must just be a virus that her body will take care of itself. The spinal tap was the worst, they encouraged me to leave the room and I did. My husband stayed, and said it was scary and not fun. We then got to spend the next 48 hours in the hospital. I’m so glad you got to go home! And I’m so glad it’s not anything worse for Tyce (even though the flu is no small thing).

Oh only 10 days old?! How sad! It’s such a nightmare when the teeny tiny ones are sick. I left for Tyce’s spinal tap, they told me to come back in 10 minutes, so I did, and when I peeked in the room, they were still in the middle of it, and it was so sad to see. Ugh. Glad the ordeal is over!

PTL! Poor little sweet. So glad to know he’s on the road to recovery. Nothing scarier than having a tiny one so sick and not be able to tell you where it hurts.

The chest turned out amazing! Creative to the nines. Too dang neat.

The chest is great, but more importantly I am very glad your baby boy is getting well. He’s too sweet to be sick.

We had that same thing happen with out little boy almost 15 years ago. I remember saying to the doctor that it seemed a bit much to hospitalize him for a low grade fever and he replied to me “If you take him home and it is meningitis he could be dead by tomorrow” Needless to say we went directly to the hospital! Sending good thoughts your way for a speedy recovery.

Awww I’m always making jokes but this time I am sad to hear little Wombat was crook. I have had scares like that when my babes were babes and the old Mummy tear supply seems to never end. I think I owned part shares in the Kleenex company! Glad to hear he’s on the up and up. Now, that dresser! Vvvvvvverrrrrrrrry cool! My boys would have got the flu on purpose to get a present of that! (Hugs to you and Wombat and the rest of your family!)

Same thing happened with my son at 14 days old — 17 years later he assures me that he doesn’t remember anything. No conclusion on what caused the fever. Scariest thing I ever went through by far, still giving thanks after all these years. So glad your little guy is better!

My son was 5 weeks premature but was totally healthy and almost 7 pounds at birth and we both went home 2 days later. When he was 17 days old he was a little fussy and a little more tired than usual. Then he turned blue while he was nursing. His color returned to normal fairly quickly but it was weird enough that we took him to the ER. He was fine the whole time we were there but based on his age they admitted us overnight to observe him. About 4 hours later he quit breathing 6 times and spiked a fever to 103. We were rushed to the PICU where they did urinalysis, a spinal tap, a nasal swab, a blood draw and a chest x-ray before starting antibiotics and antivirals. It was 3 days into what ended up being a 10 day stay in the PICU before we found out that he had developed a bladder infection that, because he was a preemie and couldn’t fight it, had quickly turned into sepsis. If we had stayed at home or if they had sent us home he would have died that night in his sleep. You don’t mess around with babies that young. It sucks that they had to do all that to your poor baby, but the alternative is that he could have been very, very seriously sick and died because they didn’t do the tests.

He is totally fine now, although it took 2 years to get to this point. The sepsis damaged his liver so about a week after he was released from the PICU we found out that he had a condition called neonatal cholestasis, which causes cirrhosis of the liver. It took until 1 week before his 2nd birthday (this past December) for his liver enzymes to normalize.

So, that was a long story. Sorry. But I just wanted to drive home that you should never second guess your gut and you shouldn’t feel bad that he had those tests even when it ended up being a less “serious” illness (even though flu in a young baby is pretty serious). My son has had like 30 blood draws in his short life and even he doesn’t have any more fear of needles and doctors than your average 2 year old.

Oh wow! What a nightmare for you Natalie! But I’m so so glad you got a happy ending. That’s exactly why they take so many precautions with newborns. The doctors were so nice and apologetic about the whole ordeal, but I truly didn’t mind, I understood why they had to be so thorough. Better than the alternative, if something really was terribly wrong.
