I’ve seen makeovers of old buffets like this about a million times, (slight exaggeration) and they usually consist of painting and glazing, which emphasizes the ornate carved part (another exaggeration, those things are usually plastic), but here’s a fun idea. Sarah at FunCycled painted it a smoky gray, then popped off the plastic and added sleek new handles and mirrors instead! Oooh, so chic. And like 50 times easier than glazing. (Not an exaggeration. Glazing is hard!)

September 19, 2013 at 8:45 AMI think this is the first of this old style buffet I’ve seen in a long time where instead of just paining those ornate details, the person actually removed and modernized. I love the touch of the mirror and it really transformed the piece. I just wish that either the mirrors were antiqued, to go with the distressed paint job or if they wanted to keep the mirrors fresh and new in appearance then do not distress the paint job. That’s my preference but a great transformation and something I will definitely be trying on my own ugly, ornate buffet. Thanks for the inspiration!

September 19, 2013 at 8:56 AMThis is great but would be even more awesome with more of a murcury glass look. It’s there a way to age glass so it looks all spotted and murcury glass-ish?

September 19, 2013 at 9:43 AMYes, I’ve been wanting to give that a try myself for a long time. I found a tutorial here: http://www.17apart.com/2012/05/how-to-diy-antiqued-mercury-mirror.html

September 19, 2013 at 10:55 AMI know that I’m in the minority, but I am seriously over the distressed thing with furniture. It doesn’t look fresh or modern at all anymore. I do, however, love that she popped off the ornate plastic stuff on the doors and replaced them with mirrors. Awesome idea.

September 19, 2013 at 4:53 PMThat is just flat-out gorgeous — and much prettier, to my mind, than the glazed & distressed pieces. I’m going to store this solution in the back of my mind for later… Just to be safe, though, I’ll PIN IT!
