By now, you’ve seen many china hutch makeovers. Perhaps you’ve even painted one yourself. I have! Here’s my hutch makeover complete with a story about the worst saleslady I’ve ever met and Halloween decorations and a funny picture of my old dog. If that won’t get you to click over, I don’t know what will.
So, painting a hutch is one thing, but how to go the extra mile?
The secret is to not ignore the inside.
Shanna at Restoration Redoux gave her hutch some serious style with a bright contrasting blue inside. Would that have had the same impact if she had just painted it white too? Of course not. But you knew that. You’re so smart.
And this one from Sarah at FunCycled wasn’t lacking in details either (Look at the top! So cool!), but she knew she could add even more oomphz by following the secret rule of not forgetting the inside.

You might worry that a busy pattern would draw attention away from all the good things happening on the outside of the hutch; but I think that it adds just enough contrast to show it off even more. The detail on the doors would have been lost if the whole hutch was all one color.
And lastly, one more from Sarah at FunCycled who has a knack for finding the best hutches in town. Even if this one didn’t begin life as hutch. Not all of it anyway. She created this Frankenhutch out of two vastly different pieces of furniture with practically opposite finishes, and unified them with a deep and distressed gray. Lovely!
But again, there’s magic on the inside too. Mirrors are another way to add some interest and depth to your piece, and dare I say, make it look much more grand and expensssssive! As long as it’s regular mirrors and not those weird faux-veined mirrors from the days of yore, you know what I’m talking about.

September 18, 2015 at 1:48 PMI think I like the Frankenhutch the best! It seems more dark and mysterious (ha!) but yet bright because of the mirrors. Love it! 😀

September 18, 2015 at 3:09 PMHaha, the gold veined mirrors… A whole large wall in the living room of my 1920’s bungalow was covered with them. It was a bit of a project to remove them & repair the plaster damage. In their defense, I suppose they made the place feel bigger… but also crazier 😉
