Halloween Tricks and a Treat!

This post is a Halloween favorite, so here it is again, with a couple new pics added. Enjoy!!

Here’s a little Halloween trick for you. You know what else is “better after?” Anyone! After some serious Photoshopping, that is.

Do you despair when you see makeup ads featuring pore-less faces? Or smirk at the Victoria Secret models splayed across the catalog, like, do they even NEED push-up bras? Ever wonder why Madonna, at age 54, barely looks a hair over 21? Well, she doesn’t.

Whatever you do, don’t let some pretty picture in a magazine get you down, because only about 5% of the images we see in the media have any sort of basis in reality. I just made that statistic up. But it’s probably true.

Tyra: not flawless, but still fierce!

Jessica Alba is so slender and well-lit in the magical land of Photoshop! Even the wrinkles on her clothes disappear!

If you want to be on the cover of a magazine, prepare to have half of your arm shaved away. Isn’t she good enough as-is?  I think so!

Hi Britney! Have you had some … work done?

I don’t know who this girl is, but she either has a case of Photoshop-itis or secretly hates her glossier, perkier, symmetrical-ier twin sister.

Kim Kardashian is a pretty gal, no question. Her top half doesn’t seem to be altered much, but her bottom half sure does.

This one really irks me.  Look how much of Kourtney’s post-partum belly they’ve removed!  Talk about giving women unrealistic expectations.

Koy asked “Mom, is that you?” Ha! I should be so lucky. My after shot couldn’t live up to Naomi Watt’s before!

Look, Photoshop can even take away your scowl and replace it with a sexy smirk! Not to mention your years of hard partying!

Or take decades off your face AND boobs!

And no, the men aren’t immune to it either.

Hellooo magazine editors? Mick Jagger is 45 billion years old, he’s supposed to look like it.

Oh, Justin, don’t be mad at me. You know I love you.

Rowr.

Happy Halloween!

Love this post! Not that my husband even cares about or comments on magazine pictures, but I always feel like it’s my “duty” to point out the untouched pictures to him!
“see, she ain’t as cute as everyone thinks she is”! Why does that always make me feel better?!? LOL!

WOW! Thanks for the reminder!! I would love to show this to all the teen girls I know so they realize “hard living” is so much more than it “appears” to be!
And on the lighter side, I totally agree with Julie! My husband has heard me say more than once, “those aren’t real!!” :

thank you for posting this!! the airbrushing is one reason why i stopped buying magazines all together because i would feel too much competition. and with all the technology nowadays how do people not realize that airbrushing is not possible to make the celebs looks better than they already dont

Love this post! It’s also how they make all those clothes in the catalogs look like they fit! Then you order and get a boxy sweater that makes you look like you spent $5 at Walmart vs $75 at your fave.com site!

I love this post. Now wouldn’t this just make you not want to be seen anywhere in real life. No wonder so many of them become paranoid!!

Okay…so I never ususally post on these comments areas, but I just had to chime in on this one… I am a photographer and it’s my job to make my clients look their best. Photoshop is a blessing! Who wants a photo of all of our flaws? Pass…thank you! Don’t get me wrong, everyday snapshots don’t get edits, but I doubt celebrities photoshop every single photo of themselves either. But if I was going to put out a photo of myself for the world to see…dang right, I would make sure it was touched up! Also, it’s no different than posts of before and after photos bloggers take of their home projects too… the before is always some snap shot of an old piece of furniture sitting in the garage getting ready to be refinished, or room that hasn’t been cleaned, bed unmade, no accessories etc… but the then viola!…the after is a CLEAN room and all decorated out with cute little touches…of course the after is going to look better!!!! Seems a little the same to me!

To the other anonymous poster… I agree with what you are saying. I had my son’s senior photos touched up. But her point to showing these pictures is to remind women that they don’t need to compare themselves to something that is unrealistic. We shouldn’t expect to look like what we see in the ads, or movies, or whatever. All of it is touched up, scripted, fake. Real life is messy with some clean times. I would like to point out that I know some of these women in these photos complained about the touch ups. Jessica Alba and Faith Hill weren’t pleased with the final results. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, that’s exactly my point! Of course everyone wants to put their best face forward, but it shouldn’t come to a point where it starts to mess with our minds. Or reality. I totally didn’t even recognize my realtor the first time I met her, because in real life, she looked NOTHING like her photo on her website.

Love your blog, love this post.
I agree with Anonymous that it’s okay to fix a blemish and doctor a photo a little bit for something that’s going to print. But completely changing the shape of somebody’s body is something else (I can’t believe the post-pregnancy one, when the article is about losing pregnancy weight- shame on them!)

Between this and hearing a man on the radio say he doesn’t think that women who are so skinny they look like heroin addicts are attractive, I am feeling so much better about myself (:
Thank you for helping us remember what “real” is.
