Things We Need To Talk About Today

Hey gang, it’s Saturday! I feel like Saturday is sort of my ‘free time,’ to blog about whatever I fancy, so I’m taking that opportunity right now. I’m calling it “Things We Need To Talk About.”

So here’s one.  I bought this new nail polish topcoat, simply because Stevie Nicks said in a magazine that it is her favorite and it makes her manicures last forever.  If it’s good enough for Stevie, it’s good enough for me. That’s what I thought anyway. But NO. It was total crap. I made a special trip to Sally just to buy this particular brand, and my nail polish still chipped off in like, five hours.  PS: It’s called Poshe and don’t buy it.

“Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies.”  No, actually don’t.  You owe me $7, Stevie.

But here’s a product I do love.  (This is not at all sponsored, just so you know).

floormateIt’s the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe, and it’s my best friend.  Not really, I do have human people friends, I swear. But this is the best floor cleaner I have ever used. I’ve had it for six months now, and I sing its praises every time I use it.  I use it on my tile floors, and they even feels cleaner under my feet than before when I was just mopping. I love that it has clean and dirty tanks so I’m never using dirty water.  Anyway, it’s awesome and well worth the price, and dang, maybe I should have tried to get them to sponsor this.

Here’s another things we need to talk about. Fleek.  Have you heard this?  Apparently it’s a word. It means super good, I think.  Mostly I see it describing eyebrows, like “Girl, your eyebrows are on fleek today.” Is this hip? I don’t know. What is going on with the world?

fleek

Here’s something else. I saw this on instagram this week and it made me laugh.  It’s true.  You ARE a pink starburst, friend, and don’t you forget it!Have a great weekend! Thanks for listening to my rambling thoughts today. Oh yes, and don’t forget about the Ultimate DIY Bundle! This white hot deal is ending soon!

An entire library of DIY ebooks for peanuts! Peanut’s I say!

Spot The Differences

When I was young, I had this strange habit of coming straight home from school and reading the newspaper.  It sounds super nerdy, but I was really just reading the comics.  Then Dear Abby. Then the letters to the editor. Ok, so maybe it was a little nerdy.

After I did the crossword puzzle (*sigh,* fine, I WAS a nerd), my favorite thing was the “Spot the Differences” puzzle. You know, where there are two almost identical pictures and you have to find the differences between them?

Today’s makeover is a little bit like that.  Sure, there are some big changes in Sherry’s living room, namely the wall treatment and the furniture, but what else?  Let’s look closer …

I spot: new curtains, a new cabinet on the left, cuckoo clock is gone, console table has been painted, TV has moved, all artwork and accessories have changed, and I think the lamp is now behind the couch. Did I miss anything?

Ottomania

A few days ago while I was searching for terrible free things on Craigslist, I came across an ottoman that was so hideous I didn’t share it. You couldn’t even tell what it was.  But it wasn’t the shredded and stained fabric that offended my delicate senses the most, it was the fact that the seller spelled like this: ‘automann.’  NOW COME ON!

But that brings me to a helpful point.  If you are searching for something specific on Craigslist, it never hurts to misspell your search term. For instance, if you’re looking for a dining set or a bureau, try searching ‘dinning sets’ or ‘burros.’  This is exactly how my brother scored a Duramax diesel truck for a STEAL. The lister had erroneously put a space in the word, spelling it “dura max,” which meant hardly anyone searching for a ‘Duramax’ saw his ad.  My brother was able to swoop in and get a steal of a deal without any competition. So keep that in mind!

And now, pretty ottomans. Julie beautified this plain little seat with gold spray paint and faux fur, two things that I think could probably fix at least half of the world’s problems.

Cara loved the shape of this bentwood ottoman, but was not a huge fan of the faded flesh-colored leather.  I don’t blame her, ew, see also: gross. But she had a secret weapon in her back pocket, a product called Rub and Restore, which I’ve never heard of, but apparently it’s made for exactly this.

She used the ivory color, and reports that it looks and feels as soft as regular leather. I’m going to have to look into this stuff fer sure. It looks brand new! More to see on her blog The Project Addict.

Some things in life ARE free.

The Gods of Craigslist smiled upon Christina one day, and blessed her with a pedestal table and four chairs for free. FREE!  Hold on a second, I’m going to go see what the Phoenix Craigslist has to offer for free today. Ok, I’m back. Prepare yourself.

This toilet:

“Could be used as a funky planter!” the description cheerily suggests.

This (obviously dead) Christmas tree:

“We have nowhere to plant it,” the giver sadly declares.  Here’s an idea. In a bonfire.

These hoses:

“They are all cut and have holes in them.” Perfect.  I’ve been looking everywhere for useless hoses.

This DVD player remote.  Just the remote.

Question: who on earth would drive all the way across town just to take a free remote control off your hands? Someone you don’t want to give your address to, that’s who.

This pile of sticks:

Great for building that bonfire.

And finally … this:

I don’t even know what this is, but I can assure you, I do not want it. Not for free, not if you paid me, no.

Ok, sorry for that assault on your eyeballs. But now Christina’s before table is going to look pretty dang nice, never mind the after.

Right? But the after will really knock your socks off:

Oh yeah. Beautiful! Gorgeous! She stripped and sanded everything down (unnecessary actually, it only needed a good sanding, she later realized) and freshened it up with a few coats of white paint.  But my favorite part is that driftwood finish she created on top.  Head on over to Remodelando la Casa to see it up close!

Re-doux: A bedroom makeover makeover

Today is my baby boy’s first birthday! Wow! I can’t believe how fast that year went by. As we were talking about what we should do for his birthday today, Mia, my six-year-old gravely announced: “Mom, don’t forget about Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it’s special for him too.” So there you have it. A special day all around.

So before we go have some cupcakes in solemn remembrance, here is a bedroom makeover for you to enjoy, and it’s a two-parter! Alicia started with a super plain beigey-mcbrown bedroom, and eventually mixed things up with a lot of white, plenty of accessories and a DIY headboard.

But that didn’t quite scratch the itch.  She didn’t feel like she had nailed her personal style, but with a few more tweaks and a fabulous board and batten accent wall, she’s finally happy! For now!
