Blue Your Mind

Remember how yesterday I was all “Oh, blue and white! It’s the BEST! It will never go out of style!!”

Well I bite my tongue, because Malorie’s mom had a very blue and white living room and she was ready for a change. Malorie, being the fantastic daughter she is, came over and spent two days transforming it into …

A blue and white living room! HaHA! I was never biting my tongue to begin with! I was right all along! Blue and white forevaaaaaa!!!!

Ahem. Excuse me. Anyway, as you can see, the reign of this coastal color combo will never fail. However, Malorie chose a much softer blue and anchored it with touches of gray, which give the room a decidedly more upscale look.

Then she paid some attention to the fireplace, which used to look a little bit like a fire hazard.

Her husband Vito worked some carpentry and masonry magic and now if fits the feel of the home perfectly. I’ll admit, I’m kind of jealous of anyone with a handy spouse and the perks that come along with it. I didn’t happen to marry a handyman. My husband is a high school principal. Perks include free pens.

One last thing Malorie wanted to give her mom was more storage, since this room is not super huge. Vito utilized this empty space under the stairs by adding floating shelves.

Aren’t they stupid? Just kidding! That’s the jealousy talking. Of course they look great. Almost as great as a big ol’ cup of pens. Almost.

Blue Ribbons, Gold Medals, White Knights

This was one shell of a chair:

And now it’s one helluva a chair!

(See what I did there?)

(I rhymed).

(But you already knew that).

(You’re so smart).

Beck at Beckwith’s Treasures went for the heart-fluttering combo of blue, white, and gold when she redid this chair and it looks fabulous.

Is there anything more classic than that color combination? Hardly. It’s such a snappy look. I dare to reason that it will always be in style. Has anyone ever looked a US sailor in uniform and thought, ‘Gee whiz, how outdated!” No. Of course not. This has never once happened in the history of the world and never will.

Such is the case with this dresser makeover from Kelly at A Swell Place to Dwell.

See? So SNAPPY! I want to redo everything I own in these colors right now.

Let’s start with the stairs. If only mine weren’t covered in carpet (pbtth!), I could start today.

Sage brought the blue and white party to her staircase with lots of paint and another vital ingredient …

… can you guess?

You could do something similar with paint (which would take you the rest of your life) or wallpaper ($$$) or you could pop on over to Plaster & Disaster and see how she saved both time and money using fabric!

Adding Cladding

Better After reader Amanda had found the perfect dresser to fit at the end of her bed. Spacious but narrow, short enough to be level with the mattress, with the perfectly weathered reclaimed wood exterior …

Ok, not so much on the reclaimed wood part. It actually looked like it was stolen from the hair salon of my childhood.

You know what I’m talking about right? It smells like perms and looks like a Patrick Nagal print?

Yes, that white melamine would have fit right in at The Hairport.

But Amanda was not really aiming for ’80s Glamazon in her bedroom; she was after that aforementioned reclaimed wood look. So she didn’t get mad. She got clad!

Cladding, to be precise, is how she described the process of wrapping the old dresser in new wood. I’ve been looking at it for a long time, and still can’t be sure how she did it. Amanda doesn’t have a blog, so maybe she’ll share some details in the comments!

Little Girl Glam

Have you been itching to do a bedroom makeover for a little girl, but can’t make up your mind which direction to go? Pink and aqua? Coral and gray? Paint or vinyl? Stripes or flowers?

I say YES. Do it all. See also: What the heck, why not, YOLO.

It might turn out as adorably as this makeover from Kiki at Kiki and Company…

It’s got it all! From the stripes to the flower decals to the vibrant color scheme and painted furniture, this room is little girl heaven.

I love how she used extra large pieces for the gallery wall, anything smaller would have gotten lost trying to compete with the big flower decals on the adjacent wall. I also love how it manages to be both bold and serene at the same time. Probably because if you look close, there is a sweet sleeping baby in the crib!

And being so nice and tidy helps too. There is zero clutter to be seen. My daughter is a major pack-rat and can hardly bear to part with even the smallest scraps of paper, so her room is a constant disaster. I have to sneakily throw things away all the time. Yet somehow she ALWAYS catches me, like “MOM!! Why did you throw this away???” as she tearfully produces an expired pizza coupon that I had stuffed inside an empty milk jug, which was inside a garbage bag, which was inside a larger garbage bag. It’s her sixth sense, I swear.

Don’t ignore the door!

If your blog is called Colour Saturated Life, it just won’t do to have a plain gray front door. If your blog is called “Notes from a Strip-Mall Delivery Entrance,” then sure.

But Gilly’s door needed to reflect her love of color and her fun personality. She managed to do both without even replacing the existing door!

Yessir, that is the same door. I’ll say it again because you probably don’t even believe me: same door. Besides the obvious dose of color, she added a lot of fun details too, like the vintage knocker, picture frame moulding and she even painted walkway to look like brick! What a cheerful change.
