The Blues

If your husband, or significant other or life partner or whatever cocks his head and looks at you like you’re crazy when you declare “Hon, I think we should paint the blue bedroom blue!” then feel free to clarify your point with this before and after from Debbie. Her Barcelona Blue bedroom went bye-bye in favor of Heavenly Blue by Benjamin Moore. She also updated a few furniture pieces with white paint, and in return lightened the whole look!

And speaking of lighting, she also updated this chandelier for her guest room. She says, “I made the glass bead drops myself by stringing them on head pins. Then I attached them with fishing line. Hiding the chain with remnant muslin that I already owned helped soften it up. All in all it was under $15!”

Great job Debbie!

Bethroom

Beth admits that maybe, just maybe, her burnt orange bathroom with the massive mural in the middle might be too over-the-top for some. But I say, hold your knuckles up to the screen for a virtual fist-bump, Beth, because it looks cool to me!

Especially when compared to that before, boy howdy. Now that the country heart wallpaper has square-danced off into the sunset, you can appreciate the fact that the blechy countertop was not blechy at all, it just needed to coordinate better with the vanity.

Checkered Past

Um… at least it has neutral flooring, right?
Neutral flooring is a great choice because it will go with ANYTHING. Ok, that’s a lie. You can’t just paint your kitchen walls magenta, hoping it will blend with your blue countertops and that every other design sin will get overlooked because you have a beige-ish floor.
In fact, the floor was the last problem area of this kitchen that Gail from My Repurposed Life tackled, and she did it just by repainting right over the vinyl! Amazing job on a shoestring budget. I love how it makes the blue countertops actually look modern and gives it a nice pop of (coordinating) color.

Green Grinch

Consider yourself lucky if you live in a world where an HOA doesn’t control your life. Or at least your yard and your paint color and the height of your grass and how often you have to trim your stupid tree that you’d really just like to chop down, if the HOA would allow it. Which it most certainly will not.

Anyway, Christine had a bit of a boring door. Faded paint, weathered hardware; no one had shown this door any love for a while. When she hung up some new lima bean wreaths (yes, people are doing that with lima beans these days, don’t be alarmed!) she noticed that the door looked even more drab in comparison. So she whipped out the chartreuse paint and added a splash of geraniums for even more color. I think it looks amazing! But guess who didn’t? Those humbugs at the HOA. Oh well. It was good while it lasted!

See it on her hilarious blog Tragic Sensation.

Tree Blind Nice

I love when people think to jazz up a plain ol’ everyday item that ordinarily gets overlooked. Like say, a window shade! This window shade was the only thing going on at that end of the bathroom, and frankly, it wasn’t really pulling its weight.

Stephanie bid the blah blind a farewell and sketched a eye-catching tree design instead. I think it adds just enough interest without being overbearing. No one likes a scene stealing tree. See it on her blog BirdHouse Family.

Nicely Handled

Better After reader Ashley had her first baby girl on the way, so this manly bedroom was on the way OUT. But while a vintage car theme wasn’t on her wishlist for the new nursery, she knew she still wanted something nontraditional and not a super-sparkly-ribbons-and-lace-puffy-fluff-glitter-unicorn-rainbow-or-any-other-title-of-a-Mariah-Carey-album-themed room.

So she went with hints of a Parisian theme, with a harlequin inspired paint job and black and white bedding. And is not that stacked suitcase dresser the cutest thing you’ve seen all day? Just fabric scraps and pieces of old purses and belts from a thriftstore! Thanks for sharing Ashley!
