Squid Vicious

Better After reader Shandy sent me a dresser makeover with the following note: I acquired the dresser for $50 on Craigslist. Some paint, stain, poly, antique glaze and lots of elbow grease later, I had a cute dresser with a squid on it.

Shandy, I think we could be friends. Anyone who paints a squid on a dresser and names him Paul is better than OK in my book. And how about that fabulous blue knob serving as an eyeball? HA! I love this and must find a reason to paint a squid somewhere.

Lookit Brooke

I really wish my blog columns were a little bigger, so I could show you this after picture in all it’s amazing glory! I actually contacted a gal to do a full-blown makeover of this here blog about 2 months ago, put down a deposit and everything. Aaaand, I haven’t heard from her since. Allegedly there is some sort of internet war in going on in the country she lives in and her service is unreliable. I hope she hasn’t been attacked by ninjas or whathaveyou.

Anyway, check out Brooke’s amazing table plus coffee table converted to bench, and do click over to her blog B.E. Interiors to see it in up close in hi-def! It’s worthy of your time, it looks good enough to eat … at! Thanks Brooke!

*** GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED***
The amazing people at Lifestyle Crafts must have known that I am in a card club. Once a month, each member of my club makes cute cards and then we swap. Only, my cards are always the lamest of the bunch, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there have been secret meetings discussing ways to politely kick me out. Well no more! Because the amazing people at Lifestyle Crafts were kind enough to send me an Epic Letterpress Combo Kit to try out!
And they want to send one to you too! Hooray!

One lucky winner will win an Epic Combo Kit with everything you need to die cut, emboss, and letterpress!

The Epic Combo Kit includes: Epic tool, cutting platform, cutting mat, embossing platform, letterpress platform, ink base, ink brayer, black ink, printing plates, paper placement guides, A2 paper pack, adhesive sheets and nesting circles cutting dies.

The cutting dies are the best, look closely at the bas relief edge around the shape on this card. Try getting that with a hole punch!
Letterpressing is like, so classy. I once looked into ordering letterpress stationary and then almost choked on my cereal, it was so expensive. But now, not only can I make my own, I can make fantastical cards like this (note: I did not actually make these cards) and so much more!
I could order some die cuts to make the cutest little favor boxes you’ve ever seen, like this:

Or I could throw the most ragingly adorable baby shower you’ve ever been to, complete with matching invitations, photo books, water bottle wraps, party favors and thank you notes!

Or I could take an entire afternoon trying to get the hang of it, and come up with this totally beginner card:
But seriously, that’s like, the best card I’ve ever made. My card club will be so proud! And it is really fun to use, and the possibilities are endless. I’m so excited!

Dorie’s Story

Hold on to your flip-flops, because we are about to take a tour of my dream home. Sadly, my dream home is not currently owned by me. Rather, it is owned by Dorie, and good thing too, because she was totally able to see what this hacked up mish-mashed mess was supposed to be, whereas I would have been like … “A balcony! Kewl!”

So here we go! See the aforementioned balcony and pillars and dormers? NOT jiving with the 1916 bungalow. Dorie took care of that and several more architectural sins that the previous owners had committed, as you shall see.

Like closing off the wrap-around porch! What the wha? Why? WHY?! Don’t worry, it looks freaking fantastic now.

And then there was the kitchen. I have no words. Yes I do. But they are swear words. Good thing they had the floor to ceiling wine racks, because living with that kitchen would require a constant state of drunkenness. How else could you not be semi-bothered by the oven being IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM? But ohmygoshyouguys, the after.

Unbelievable! Nothing frightfully wrong with the bathroom, other than the gold fixtures and hunter green tiles affixed to the room’s surfaces at random. So yeah, pretty bad. But the after is unrecognizable! I. Want.

And finally, what makes more sense when you live in Arizona, than enclosing yet another porch and adding an enormous fireplace? Anything, that’s what. Anything makes more sense than that. Quantum physics, astrology, Charlie Sheen, anything.

But drink in the after! Drink with your eyes! It’s like paradise!

There is A LOT more to see on Dorie’s blog Tuesdays with Dorie, check it out! And Dorie, don’t be alarmed if you come out one day and find me living on your back porch.

Loving your Laundry

Let’s take a little tour of Elyse’s laundry room. But don’t get all carried away, we’re going to take it slow! Take time to admire the details, such as this boring cabinet and plain wire shelf. Yawn alert. Ok, now scrolly scroll down to the after, and look! That is the same exact cabinet and shelf, I kid you not! She just trimmed them out and added a lil’ beadboard! Isn’t that amazing?

Ok, now you can continue onward and view this entire laundry room in it’s magnificent glory. But first, another before:

Pretty great, huh? I love it all. I tried labeling my laundry baskets once, but then I looked a the signs I printed out that said “colored” and “whites,” and then I felt like a big racist. So I threw them away! I’m weird, I know this. See more from Elyse on her blog Loving Your Space.

One Man Show

“Let’s hear it for the BOYYYY! Let’s give the boy a HA-AH-AH-AH-AH-YAND!”

Sorry, when I run out of things to say, I just burst into Deniece Williams songs from the 80’s. I do that in regular life too. It’s a big hit at the grocery store. Not really.

But the purpose of this particular song is because this particular piece was submitted by one of my five male readers, Jesse from NineRed! (I hope there are more than five male readers. Are you out there fellas? Make yourself known! I might even send you my empty yogurt container like I sent my random commenter last month! Kidding, I sent her a Chipotle gift card, I’m not that horrible).

Anyway, Jesse certainly deserves a hand, his table turned out great! He’s got a knack for color and design. Head over and say hi, and you should check out his etsy too, if you are a lover of vintage lampshades, and you know you are.
