From what I understand, Emily’s home kind of sort of had three bedrooms, but the master bedroom was really just a breezeway thing off of the garage. I know a lady who designed her home so that the only door into the garage was in her bedroom. I really can’t imagine how or why that would come in handy.
Less likelihood of your teenagers sneaking in or out? Really short walk to your car in the morning? Easier to unload your toilet paper when you got home from the store?

Huh.

Anyway, Emily needed more room ya’ll, a baby was coming! So they went up!

When Blogger is a Lemon

This idea from Andy at Memoirs of the Shoe Obsessed is perfect for summer! Unless you live where I live, and summer means hiding indoors clutching packages of frozen vegetables to your chest, and hoping someone with a pool will invite you over. But this old headboard also makes for a great puppet theater too! Endless possibilities here. So like, do you have a pool?

Prone to Two-Tone

Did you wake up this morning and say to yourself, “Dang, I wish I could see a whole bunch of nice two-toned furniture makeovers today, especially those featuring distressed white paint jobs and with darker, naturally stained tops?” If so, consider yourself lucky! And psychic!

First, Lisa from Recaptured Charm made over this early 20th century Imperial Loyalist hutch. Yeah, those are her words, not mine. Obviously girlfriend knows her stuff. I was planning on rhyming “grime” and “sublime.”















No reason the kiddies should be left out of the fun. Check out this stylin‘ high chair from Katie at A Little Touch of Love, and if you are still thirsty for similar makeovers, spend some time checking out her blog, it’s chock-full of them! (random side note: a reporter in the newspaper spelled it ‘chalk full’ last week and I couldn’t help snorting in disgust. It’s CHOCK-full! Also acceptable: chuck-full. Unacceptable: chalk full. Just so you know).





 

Rachelle gave some life and light back to this dull desk. I love the seven little drawers across the top, even though they are probably just teasing me and are actually three regular sized drawers! You can see it and more on her blog The Adventures of Burke and Rachelle.


 

This classic piece had been abused and neglected and was up for grabs at a flea market until Gloria came around. She revived the thirsty wood on top and gave the rest of it a whitewashed look. A lot more details and great pictures to see on her blog Potentially Beautiful.

 

And finally Lindsay from Country Girl Home did everyone one better, and built her table herself! What a show off! Just kidding, Lindsay! I think it’s fantastic. She just made up the plan herself, went to Lowe’s and bough the wood and built it! Tons of plans for furniture that you can build yourself, everything from bookshelves to bunkbeds, and the plans are very easy to follow. (So easy even I can do it!)

Banquette Vignette

I knew a big group of guys in college who all shared a tiny little house. As you can imagine, cute decor was not a priority. All I can remember is a TV, couch and a pool table. And the most atrocious toilet you’ve ever seen.

However, one guy did have the couch professionally reupholstered, but only because that’s where he crashed most nights. Even then, he didn’t bother to redo the entire couch, just his favorite two cushions, no joke.

Obviously Rachel’s husband’s bachelor pad was in far better condition, seeing how she moved into it when they got married and all. But it still needed a woman’s touch. There are some things that just won’t ever cross a guy’s mind. Like cafe curtains with coordinating throw pillows. Or centerpieces with fresh flowers. Or fluffing up that wimpy little banquette cushion … unless that’s where they like to sleep, of course. See it on her blog New at the Newmans. Thanks Rachel!

Dying For a Change

I may have told you before about how these dark, overly ornate chests remind me of coffins. It’s like a vampire might pop out of there at any second, and not the hunky Cullen variety. Crreeepy. 
But with a little two-tone turquoise on white action and some polishing up of the handles, this $20 Craigslist now makes for a great statement piece, a statement that no longer says, “Hey, you could store bodies in here!” Check it out on the blog My Beautiful Life.

Dizzy Desk

I felt a little bad as I scrolled quickly through Rita’s blog to get to the after picture of this desk. This thing probably took a looooong time. All the taping! And leveling! Not to mention the dizziness caused by the black and white design! I felt like I needed to take a moment of silence and send her an imaginary fist bump for a job well done.
