What a Hoot!

Let me tell you something, I am down with the whole dresser-as-a-changing table idea. Because, duh, when your baby is out of diapers, you still have a very usable dresser.  There is just no disguising a regular changing table after its purpose in life has peaked:  “Hey, uh Susan?  Why is there a changing table in your living room?”  “Don’t be a fool!  That’s obviously a bookcase!”  “Oooookaaaay.”

So anyway, here’s a great $8 dresser that Better After reader Brooke repurposed as a changing table. And just in case you were about to point out that any child sleeping in a twin bed should be out of diapers, let me tell you something else: this is a shared bedroom, the crib is just out of sight.  And I think the whole room is outta sight!

And look!  Brooke didn’t stop there with her bargain finds, she picked up these owls for $3, fixed the toe (claw?  talon?) with an old pen cap and clay, and now she has a sweet little set of bookends.

The Wacky Pack

There are people in life, maybe you are one of them, who march to the beat of a different drum.  Actually, these people aren’t even in the parade.  They are doing gleeful somersaults down the hill while everyone else is just marching back and forth.  These are the people who don’t consider ‘greige’ a color.  These are the people who consider “white and distressed” a starting point.  These are the people you should always invite to your parties.  Today we honor them and their fabulous out-of-the-boxness!

Jessie created a kitchen island from an old dresser, for under $100!  See it on Jessie’s Blog.

Jaqueline got artsy on her little $4.27 table; Picasso would be proud!  See it on her blog Jax and Marbles.

Better After reader Molly had never ever painted furniture before, until someone asked her to finish this table!  I foresee a three-way checkers tournament happening here.

And Mary from the Decorative Paintbrush has never met a color she didn’t like or a pattern she didn’t dare pair it with.  Check out this table redo HERE.

And this striped, checkered, polka-dotted, animal printed, flowered, initialed, heart-star-fleur-de-lis-angel-wings festooned desk (gasping for breath) desk HERE

Thanks so much ladies!  Keep on somersaulting!

That’s Jacked!

Speaking of flags, (we weren’t actually, but we are now) my husband works at a high school with a large population of foreign students.  The administrators thought that a nice way to recognize this fact would be to set up big display of flagpoles out front, flying all the flags of the countries represented by their students.  Only … somehow a communist North Korea flag got mixed in there accidentally, and a whole bunch of people got offended.  Whoopsie!

So the whole point of that story was to talk about this desk and the Union Jack trend.  I think we can almost all agree that the Union Jack is a pretty rad flag.  But … now I notice that this desk is not really sporting a traditional Union Jack at all, just some cool stripes.  Hrm.  Still looks awesome.

Sick of Brick

Lots of homes here in the boiling metropolis of Phoenix are equipped with fireplaces, for the same reason earth is equipped with Kim Kardashian —  to serve no useful purpose that I can deduce other than to look nice.  Is that also the case in Tennesee?  The fireplace thing?  Or are fireplaces a necessity there?

I wouldn’t know, but what I do know is that while Tennesee dwellers Raney and her husband may or may not have needed a fireplace, they definitely needed more style in their living room.

So they replaced the brick with stacked stone, installed a new firebox and a marble hearth and added a set of built-in bookcases to give the whole set-up some much needed width.  (Insert your own Kim Kardashian joke here.)
