Right Wing

Anyone else getting their butt kicked by summer?  Happens to me every year.  I remember when I was a kid, summertime seemed to stretch out f-o-r-e-v-e-r.  I was always excited to finally go back to school.  Now it flies by!  You try to pack so much in that everything is a blur.  I told my friend the other day that I feel like August is already over, and she was like “Um, it’s still July.” And I was like “EXACTLY.”

Holla if you hear me. And give a holla to Lisa at Sweet Parsley Home for her gray wingback makeover.  Gosh, so pretty.  Learning how to reupholster is at the top of my to do list. Sometime.  When I have time.  Maybe next summer.

Keeping up with the times.

Hello, happy Monday, I hope you had a swell holiday weekend! Did you have a chance to check out the leather giveaway?  Still time to enter!

But first I bring you the tale of a white kitchen with wooden countertops that got made over into a white kitchen with wooden countertops.  What?! It’s true.

Better After reader Emily and her husband purchased their home from an elderly couple that hadn’t updated a thing for 30 years.  (So whew, white kitchens are pretty timeless, in case you were worried).  They replaced the faux counters with the real deal cherry butcherblock and Emily’s dad built new frames, drawers and doors for the cabinets (sight unseen, three states away! That’s a handy dad).  A marble backsplash completes the look, and I think they’re good for at least another 30 years!

Little Leather Projects and a Giveaway!

Last week I shared my little sewing chair makeover that got super glam-ified thanks to a delicious swath of snakeskin embossed leather from the Leather Hide Store.

after chair

This wasn’t my first time working with leather, you may remember the ostrich-embossed leather pillows I made last year, which I still love!

Even though leather has always been a classic material, it’s enjoying a surge in trendiness right now. I seem to always be drawn to the embossed leathers, but the Leather Hide Store has a wide selection of textures and colors, so check them if you’re looking to add a little (or a lot!) of oomph to your next project.

Oooh, I wish you had touch-o-vision, because this stuff is so soft, like buttah!

It’s not cheap, that’s for sure, so I wanted to make sure I made use of every single scrap.  So I took some leftover pieces and covered an IKEA mirror.

It was actually really easy, I just cut four pieces to match up with the sides and glued them on.  After fumbling around for a bit, I realized that instead of cutting the pieces exactly the right size, if I trimmed them down smaller, the stretch in the leather made up for it and the pieces came together nicely and looked much more fitted.

Oh wait, there’s more!  I made some earrings too! Awkward selfie alert:

Now I can match my chair perfectly if we ever go out on a date.

Hold the phone.  There’s more. I really couldn’t stand to waste any of it, so I made some tassels too. I put one on my keychain, and I don’t even know what I’m going to do with the rest, but they were so easy and fun that I couldn’t stop! Here’s a quick pic tutorial:

MAKE A TASSEL

How-To:

1: Cut strips in the leather, leaving about 1/2 inch space at the top. (Don’t stress yourself out making it perfect).

2: Trim the edges to a point. (Optional, but I think it looks much nicer).

3. Cut off one of the strips and glue together to make a loop.

4: Roll the leather tightly around the loop, and add a dot of glue (I used hot glue) to hold it together at the end.

So easy!  I added one more strip around the top just to dress it up.

Here’s a Pinterest-y graphic, y’know, if you’re into that sort of thing:

Shell Shocked

Friends, I have a teething baby on my hands.  Luckily for me, he gave up nursing a few weeks ago, or else I’d have a teething baby on my … something else.  (Actually, I am sad he isn’t nursing anymore.  I nursed my daughter for an entire year, but this time around we just couldn’t make it happen. Boys are harder, just my theory).

That has nothing to do with this makeover from Jen at A Thousand Words, but I tend to ramble when I’m tired. (I’m tired from the teething baby not sleeping ever). You know what Matt does when he’s tired?  If he falls asleep watching TV (and holding the remote) he’ll start turning the volume all the way up until the TV is shaking the walls and I wake up in a sheer panic and turn it off.  He never even wakes up at all!  This happens like, once a week.

Anyway, onto the makeover!  Here we see an mere shell of a dresser.  Jen found it on the side of the road and brought it home, despite the eyebrow of dubiousness from her husband.

Tada!  She refinished the top and build MDF shelves for the inside and now has some sweet sweet storage. And if her husbands eyebrows could talk they’d say “Nicely done!”

The End of the Stone Age

Before Sara Jane had stepped foot in this home, her realtor warned her about “THE WALL.”  This clunky abomination had apparently already scared off several potential buyers, but it finally met its match with Sara Jane. She wasn’t scared of its space-eating size and awkward height; she knew it could be a sleek and modern space.  Good thing she bought the house and not me, because I probably would have thrown a sheet over it and pretended it wasn’t there. “Oh that?  That’s our resident house ghost.  Pay no mind.”

When the original plan to mount the TV to the wall became cost-prohibitive, she switched to plan B and attached it to the ceiling, running cords through the attic.  I like it even better that way!  See more details on the blog Honey I’m Home.
