Friends, I have a teething baby on my hands. Luckily for me, he gave up nursing a few weeks ago, or else I’d have a teething baby on my … something else. (Actually, I am sad he isn’t nursing anymore. I nursed my daughter for an entire year, but this time around we just couldn’t make it happen. Boys are harder, just my theory).
That has nothing to do with this makeover from Jen at A Thousand Words, but I tend to ramble when I’m tired. (I’m tired from the teething baby not sleeping ever). You know what Matt does when he’s tired? If he falls asleep watching TV (and holding the remote) he’ll start turning the volume all the way up until the TV is shaking the walls and I wake up in a sheer panic and turn it off. He never even wakes up at all! This happens like, once a week.
Anyway, onto the makeover! Here we see an mere shell of a dresser. Jen found it on the side of the road and brought it home, despite the eyebrow of dubiousness from her husband.
Tada! She refinished the top and build MDF shelves for the inside and now has some sweet sweet storage. And if her husbands eyebrows could talk they’d say “Nicely done!”
PS: We have an Arrow Fastener custom tools winner! Congrats Kelly Peairs! Check your email!

July 3, 2014 at 7:38 AMI know that “the eyebrow of dubiousness” very well!
This project is really cool. Taking something that was surely destined for the dump and repurposing it into something that looks like it’s from PB is genius!
That’s why I love your column, Lindsey. I can enjoy the befores and afters without getting my hands dirty or even getting out of my chair.

July 3, 2014 at 8:44 AMThis is genius! When I looked at the Before, I could not imagine what could be done with it. Love it. I have a question. I also have a lot of furniture in my garage that I intend to paint semi-gloss white. But I can’t seem to get the smooth finish I’m after. I have tried Floetrol and it makes a little difference for the brush, but not much. I’ve tried rollers designed for smooth surfaces (cabinet and door). The Floetrol seems to make it more bubbly. The paint brand is Dunn-Edwards, and I can’t change it because that’s the trim color all over the house and we are making built-ins with this furniture. In the future I’ll be painting cabinets, wainscoting, bookcases, you name it. So I really want to get my technique down. Could you ask your readers (the ones who get off their duffs and do these great re-dos!)? How do you get the best finish out of semi-gloss paint?
PS I have a couple of upholstery submissions for you, if I can get to it…No blog, no up-cycling business, just me avoiding my responsibilities in the garage. I also want to share a great idea for hot rooms/windows in the summer. Love your new house by the way.

July 3, 2014 at 12:49 PMHi Katie! Thanks for the kind words! Here are the best tips I’ve found for getting that smooth finish when you’re hand painting. http://www.vintagerevivals.com/2014/05/3-frustrating-furniture-painting-problems-solved-with-one-tip.html I agree that Floetrol makes little to no difference, at least from my experiences. Perhaps if you could get it color-matched, this would work for you. I’d love to see your upholstery submissions and window idea too! 🙂

July 3, 2014 at 10:58 AMI hear you on the mixed emotions about weaning. My son self-weaned about 6 weeks ago, and I’m enjoying the freedom, but really wish he would have kept going a little longer! He was only 8 months old when he quit. (I tried to keep going for a month, but he absolutely refused.)
Anyways, the dresser looks lovely! Thanks to your blog, I’m now noticing all the old nasty furniture in the second hand stores and thinking “man, that could really be something, maybe I should…” even though I have no time, no space, and no need for furniture! 🙂

July 3, 2014 at 12:17 PMDespite being a simple makeover, it’s very well done. Jen really worked her magic on it.

July 3, 2014 at 5:16 PMI look so forward to reading your posts and seeing the makeovers! Your sense of humor makes me giggle, too. But today I was sad to hear that your little one isn’t sleeping because of teething. I remember how hard that was! We applied Orajel to our 3 kids gums and, BINGO! they’d calm down and go to sleep. Now our daughter & SIL use it for our grandson. That stuff is magic! Hope it can help your guy, too.

July 3, 2014 at 7:52 PMMay I ask how old your little guy was when he stop breast feeding? The Dr. gave the thumbs up for our little guy to sample some solids. But he has no interest.
His older brother was an animal when it came to starting solids. He would start screaming when everyone would sit at the dinner table, cause he wanted what was on our plates. It was lovely when we would go out to eat.

July 4, 2014 at 11:55 AMHi Will!
He was only about three months old when he stopped. He’s started cereal now, but not very interested in that either. :/

July 3, 2014 at 9:09 PMTry Hyland’s teething tablets if you haven’t already. They seem to work well for a lot of babies.

July 3, 2014 at 9:31 PMThat is a beautiful After and looks gorgeous. Also,I am a daily victim of the “the eyebrow of dubiousness” and plan to use that phrase to tell my hubby to stop. 😉
