Getting (un)Plastered

When Brandi bought her home, she inherited some heavily plastered walls. How heavy?  Suspiciously heavy.  Like the previous owners were trying to … hide something.  Probably just bad wallpaper, but hey, you never know.

Brandi didn’t want to dig any deeper into that mystery, so she decided to install plank walls right over the plaster instead.  Whew! Creepy crisis averted.

It completely brightened up the foyer and changed the whole feel of the house.  Literally. You could have probably cut yourself on those jagged plaster walls before.  They didn’t spare the ceilings either, here’s a closer look: plastered ceiling before

paneled ceiling after

Muuch better. And that sad little dangly light was replaced with this beautiful Moravian star fixture.

If I told my hubby I wanted to do this, he would think I’m crazy! But, look at the charm! Love it. He even had to admit he liked it after he saw the pictures.

Absolutely love the star fixture! I’ve seen them a few times about the internets, and they are just too cute every time!

    Wonderful!

I saw a house like this during house hunting. I felt like I was in a cave, and couldn’t see any way to deal with it. Go, Brandi, go!

Such a nice update! The ceiling “before” looks like a frosted cupcake! The planking adds such warmth and the light fixture adds a fun, sparkly twist.

I actually had walls with plaster so thick that we did cut ourselves on it. Frequently. I spent almost 20 hours over the course of a month with a hand held sander to smooth them down. I like this option so much better!

Lindsay- this looks great. I’ve been eyeballing this project for quite some time. The fact that my walls are plaster w lath makes me hesitant. Suggestions on how to anchor through the plaster would be great. All other tutorials seem to be going over Sheetrock.
    Thanks!
