Are you one of the countless women who suffer from a debilitating condition known to regularly cause mood swings, irritability, irrational behavior, and an increased need for chocolate? I’m not talking about PMS. I’m talking about PMMS: Pinterest Makes Me Sad.
You may have PMMS if you find yourself crushingly disappointed that the new enchilada recipe you tried was not in fact “LIFE CHANGING!!!!!”
You may have PMMS if you feel the need to hang your head in shame because your kids gave out store-bought Valentines at school.
You may have PMMS if the mere sight of an Elf on the Shelf sends you to a dark place.
You may have PPMS if gazing at pin after pin of perfectly styled and spacious laundry rooms make you despair even setting foot in your average-at-best laundry room.
But there is help. Help is called Reality, and I’m here to give you a dose. Reality is, plenty of people have small dark laundry rooms that probably smell a little funky and feature things like exposed pipes and bare light bulbs. That’s OK! You can still work with that to create a pretty space.
Lisa embraced all the pipeage that was happening in here and made it part of the room with some bright red paint. I love how it looks against the happy aqua walls. It’s like a sculpture! See it at Two Loose Teeth.
And Becky decided to disguise the pipes and cinderblock wall of her laundry room with a pretty stenciled pegboard that she hung right over the top. A functional facade. Fabulous, fun, and feasible.
See how she did it on her blog Organizing Made Fun.

November 6, 2014 at 6:48 AMThanks for the good laugh!!!! You always brighten my mornings!!! I LOVE these makeovers! They did a great job without breaking the bank and it looks much more inviting…to do laundry in, or course.

November 6, 2014 at 6:52 AMYou are so right about PMMS, but it also affects people who watch too much HGTV. My own reality is fine and good, but it ain’t nothin’ like a million dollar makeover. Who are these people who in their 20s can afford to buy a 700,000 house, gut it, and redo everything?
Oh sorry, this is just about laundry rooms. I guess I just needed to vent.

November 6, 2014 at 7:28 AMThese are fabulous!!! How creative ! And that red paint! And I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one that suffers from PMMS .. It’s a comfort to know that there may still be just us “normal” not-getting-a-shower-on-a-daily-basis kind of moms.

November 6, 2014 at 7:53 AMCreativity wins again! Anyone can make a fabulous room if they throw enough money at it but creating a happy little laundry space without a huge investment (or major sweat equity) is a good lesson for us all.

November 6, 2014 at 8:30 AMI’m just jealous of anyone who has a laundry room! My washer and dryer go in the garage, which is always fun in the boiling hot AZ summers. Love how they prettied these spaces up!

November 6, 2014 at 9:21 AMThese are my kind of makeovers! Big giant makeovers that spend tens of thousands of dollars depress me. But these types of makeovers, when you have to work with what you have, are really inspiring and feel “do-able”.

November 6, 2014 at 10:15 AMThis post cracks me up, because it’s so true! Funny. That orange pipe rocks, gives me some ideas about a similar space I have. My laundry sink looks in the same shape as the one in the bottom picture. I wish I know a way to clean it up without totally replacing it. Thanks for the laugh and inspiration!

November 6, 2014 at 10:59 AMYou crack me up!! PMMS should be a real diagnosis in the DSM, because it certainly occurs in me! Also the makeovers are amazing and attainable. I now want brightly colored pipes in my basement!

November 6, 2014 at 1:25 PMAnd most people would want to gut the whole thing to move the pipes. I really like the red pipes! Fabulous way to work with what you have. A wonderful room does not have to take hours and hours and thousands of dollars. Someday I will have a laundry room of my own. And I will look on Pinterest and hate it, even though I’ve been waiting for a laundry room forever. And then I will embrace it and make it my happy place, even if it isn’t Pin-worthy.
