There were a lot of things Shannon didn’t love about her home when she first moved in, but one thing she DID love was that rose colored carpet. So lush. So eye-catching. I’m kidding, of course. It was frighteningly fuchsia and she had it ripped out within four hours of getting the keys.
But there really were a lot of great elements to this room: good size, great light, and original built-ins flanking a fireplace that had never even been used! Eventually she brought everything up-to-date with fresh paint, new flooring, and tons of details that totally vibe with the home’s retro charm. (Anything look familiar in here?)
Get the full rundown of the two-year process it took to get to this point on her blog Sewing Barefoot.

January 20, 2014 at 12:55 PMWow you hardly saw the built in book cases before. The carpet was the focal point in fact I am not even sure the room existed; I think it was just fuchsia carpet. That’s all I remember. I really like the thick white mantle too.

January 20, 2014 at 2:07 PMOMG…The carpet is pretty ‘vivid’ 😉 But can you imagine living with rusty red carpeting in not one, not two but 3 rooms? That was me in a former home…and we just didn’t have the chance (money) to change it while we lived there. Glad to see her fushia met its match early on 🙂 Love the after!

January 20, 2014 at 4:03 PMDid you post this while you were in labor? Are you nuts? Nice makeover though and I have to admire a woman with dedication to her blog. I like this room. I like that they didn’t rip out everything and start over but made do with what was there.

January 20, 2014 at 5:32 PMThe bookcases really pop out now! I didn’t even notice the trim in all white.
I have a similar set up and cut out cardboard to fit the space in between the shelves then wrapped it with fabric and popped it in. I love it because if you get bored of the background it is super easy to change with no painting, nailing, etc. Then you don’t have to be afraid to really make it pop with a bold look. Also, it is fun to change up with holiday fabric!

January 20, 2014 at 5:44 PMWow – that is one fabulous makeover! That first picture brought back scary memories of the mauve carpeting we had in our condo in the early 90s…
