When Better After reader Katie laid eyes on this house, her first thoughts were “I’ve finally found the perfect venue to open my ’70s-themed karaoke bar, YES.” No wait, that’s what I was thinking. But Katie has more vision than me, and actually planned on turning this shagalicious space into a beautiful home.
Out went the wall-to-wall shag, up came the sunken floors, and into the current decade came everything else.
And how about that inexplicable iron railing? Probably meant to protect guests from falling three deadly inches into the sunken living room, but now it all flows together as one open space. (That corner would have made the perfect karaoke stage though, did you even consider that, Katie?)
There was a lot of green and gold in this home when they began, like the gold tile in the entryway here. So Katie and her husband chose to work with it instead of against it, and brought in some cheerful paint colors to play it up.
Doesn’t it all look – sing with me now – So Happy Together?

October 30, 2013 at 10:21 AMMy eyes! My eyes!! That green shag carpeting looks a lot like the one we had in our previous home. I do not miss that ugly thing at all! What a transformation – the new wood flooring is beautiful. Rock on, Katie!

October 30, 2013 at 10:54 AMGreat transformation! That said, I’d like to have the two chairs in the first picture. I want them, very bad…

October 30, 2013 at 2:41 PMWhile the living room is a gorgeous make over the entry way is phenomenal. I would have wanted to get rid of that tile. The before was so dingy but the after is so cheerful.

October 30, 2013 at 2:59 PMWhat a little paint, flooring, and imagination can do! Although, I sorta really liked that orange hanging lamp in the before living room.

October 30, 2013 at 6:18 PMAs one who misses the 70s, I would have kept that railing, shag carpet (got a rake?), and that groovy hanging lamp. Otherwise, it’s a great After.

October 30, 2013 at 7:09 PMI can smell stale cigarettes just LOOKING at the before picture. Love what you did except the mint with gold makes my eyeballs rattle.

October 31, 2013 at 4:51 AMOh. My. Gracious! Girl, you seriously crack me up! Love the transformation but love the hilarious monologue even more. I have this mental image of some little oriental Elvis crooning “Love Me Tender” hanging over that awful iron railing!

November 12, 2013 at 10:30 AMI would never even CONSIDER buying that house because it looks SERIOUSLY HAUNTED in the the “before” pics. *shudder* But… that being said… the “after” is amazing. They did great work!!!

May 11, 2016 at 7:47 PMWood is always a favorite of mine when it comes to room decoration, this is a cheaper cost that everyone can do but it will substantially increase the value if done properly. I love it!Thank you for sharing!
