From Draper to Dapper

Do you watch Mad Men? I’ve been watching it since my horrible bout with Strep last year, wherein I had no strength to do anything besides stare at the TV.  It’s an interesting show, I guess, but so WEIRD.  And depressing.  I don’t know why I keep hanging on (Jon Hamm), but I do.

Anyway, when Sarah sent her kitchen makeover my way, and said it used to look just like Betty Draper’s kitchen, I knew exactly what she was talking about! Check out her blog The Cyclist’s Wife for a side-by-side.  Happily, it looks much more ‘these days’ these days, with white cabinetry and a butcher-block countertop and brand new everything else.  I like how she took out the cabinets next to the window, I think it makes it seem bigger and gives it the idea of open-cabinets without all hassle that goes with it. Great job Sarah!

I totally agree about the Mad Men comment – it is depressing and there’s no resolution, but I’m still watching…. Great kitchen!

That after kitchen would make me want to cook dinner. Well, maybe not, but it would be enjoyable in such a pretty kitchen.

Thanks ladies! Domestic lady – my husband wasn’t so sure about removing those cabinets but we both love it now. With the new cabinets (because we have lazy susan’s in the lower corners) we actually have more space. Removing the cabinets around the windows allows much more light to come in and makes the kitchen feel bigger. Good luck!

    Gorgeous kitchen! Great job, Sarah!

I agree about Mad Men. It makes me lose my faith in humanity, but I still watch!

What a makeover! And I totally agree with you about mad men…what’s going on this season? It’s become so, so strange. It sort of feels like a show they’d make you watch in high school and then pick apart and analyze.

Great transformation! 50’s kitchens are such a challenge. It is so light and airy now. I have that same kitchen and recently renovated. If you end up needing more counter/work space, you might consider a pub table in the middle of the floor. I used one that pulls out on two sides. I can then use it for a casual buffet Because it has legs and is not solid like an island, it gives a more open feeling, but is very functional.
