Do the harlequin shake!

Looking for a quick and easy way to update a table or somesuch?  Look further!  These tables are neither quick nor easy.  Because … have you ever tried painting a harlequin pattern?  I have.  You might think you can just draw a few diagonal lines and wing the rest, but that is not true.  There is very much measuring and math and maybe tears involved.

So, props to … ACK!  I’m so sorry. I’ve somehow deleted the name of the dear soul who created this. I’ve looked and looked and can’t find it.  Please inform me ASAP and I’ll get it up here.  Anyway, I love the smaller scale of the pattern here, it almost looks like houndstooth.  UPDATE: This is from Better After reader Shirley!  Thanks Shirley!

And I also love the look of the wider-set pattern in soft colors on this coffee table from Shannon. I think the harlequin adds just enough edge to an otherwise very feminine and curvy piece, and same goes for the chunky round one above. Check it out on Shannon’s blog  Fox Hollow Cottage.

And I’m in love with the first table. The colors are so subdued it would go well with so many different seasons and holidays, not to mention the ordinary day.

I’ve always been scared of harlequins, but am quite pleased with seeing them painted into a table.
