Altar’d

Please welcome Better After’s: newest sponsor: Altar’d!
If you live in or around Houston, TX (specifically League City), consider yourself lucky, because you are in the neighborhood of Mandie and Colby, the owner’s of Altar’d! (And if you aren’t, don’t you worry, they are about to start shipping all over the US!)
They are doing what I’d love to be doing if I had time, talent and organizational skills: redoing ugly, outdated, or unfinished furniture into beautiful, unique pieces.
Mandie says, “We chose the name “Altar’d” because it reminds us that God has given us “beauty for ashes” (Isaiah 61:3). We cannot compare what we do to as great a gift as that. But, what we do is take the old forgotten furniture and give it new beauty.”
One of my favorite things about Altar’d is the upcoming” section of their website. You can see some of the unfinished furniture they have on hand and decide exactly how you would customize it, rather than finding say, that the dresser you’ve always dreamed of in blue has already been refinished in black.
Mandie starts each job with a personal consultation, to make sure each and every piece is exactly what the customer wants. And despite the fact that she uses only the highest quality paints and products, her prices are ridiculously affordable!
And if that’s not proof enough of Altar’d’s awesomeness, you can see that I already featured them once on this very blog, back in January!
Speaking of blogs, (and we were, weren’t we?), in addition to the website, Altar’d now has a blog too! It’s right here! So please check them out and show them some love, won’t you?

Book Look

This dog is probably wondering why there is a mysterious pink window on the floor, and who that handsome stranger is staring back at him. And maybe he’s wondering, if he had opposable thumbs, what he could do to spruce up all that pink. Although probably not, as he is colorblind. Good thing his owner Anne-Marie knew what to do!
She modgepodged pages of an old book onto the frame, which sounds simple enough, but it really gave it such a unique look! I love it. Check out more pics on her blog 10 Rooms. Thanks Anne-Marie!

White Wicker

I’m back! From where, I don’t know, because our spring break was totally lame. I did give my son’s bedroom a pretty major makeover, but guess what? I forgot to take before and after pictures. It’s true! Someday I’ll figure out how to screw my head on straight. Maybe.
Well, I hope you had a good week! And I’m so excited about the new advertisers that have signed on to sponsor Better After! I will be introducing them throughout the week, so yay for that!
Also, I just got a couple of the sweetest comments from one Shane’s Angie, but she didn’t leave a way to contact her, so shout out to you Shane’s Angie! Thanks for making my day a whole heckuva lot nicer!
OK, on to the goods: Andrea from Andrea’s Attic found these chairs on Craigslist for $50. Yikes! She must have seen their hidden potential, because I would have run the other way. Sure enough, they look awesome with a fresh coat of paint and new cushions. I also love the personalized Mr. & Mrs. pillows! Check out her blog: Andrea’s Attic, especially if you are considering painting wicker, as she offers some great tips. Tips that would have come in handy back when I was painting a wicker piece of my own and burned through about 20 cans of spray paint.

Simply Sublime

You’d better sit down for this. Well, you probably already are sitting down, so stand up and then sit back down.
This fantabulous redo comes from Amy at Playing Sublimely. She and her handy husband bought this 1960’s home and with a lot of major work, took it from the popcorn ceiling-ed past to the portico porched present.

They also tackled the tacky kitchen, which bears absolutely no resemblance the the jaw-dropping kitchen they now enjoy. Check out that process HERE.

The plain-jane entryway also got a glamorous redo with new railings, runners and moulding. Check it out HERE. Thanks so much for sharing Amy! I’m trying not to seethe with jealousy at your awesome house!

Sconce Renaissance

Every time I see the word “sconce,” it makes me think of scones. Mmmmm. The following redo is a sconce, not a scone, but nevertheless, it’s still a tasty treat!
Kristi gave her outdated sconce a quick makeover and didn’t even take it off the wall! She just taped around it, gave it a quick coat and replaced the ruffly glass thing with a new shade. Looks great! Check it out on her blog Creative Kristi, and thanks to AnNicole from Our Suburban Cottage, for bringing this one to my attention!

Denise’s Kitchen

The fleshy pink paint! The knotty wood! It’s … it’s everywhere! It makes me think of intestines and caves and lumberjacks. I feel like I’ve been eaten alive by Paul Bunyan.
(If you recall, I can’t look at knotty wood for too long without getting creeped the heck out).
That after is like freedom and fresh air and springtime and happiness. Love it. Thanks to Denise for sharing this great redo!
