No Cares Given

People often confide in me that they would love to redo their furniture, but they feel too guilty because it was given to them by their in-laws, or it was passed down from their grandmother or something along those lines.  My typical response is “Who cares!?” (This is why I would be a terrible therapist.)

Who cares if your in-laws have ‘opinions’ or your grandmother’s item was ‘valuable?’ That shouldn’t be the deciding factor on what goes and stays in your home. An item is only as valuable as its value to you. Put that on a t-shirt and wear it to your family reunion.

But seriously, I know it can be tricky to navigate that type of situation.  All of this could be easily avoided if your family members would stop being so generous and just gave you terribly run-down and rickety old furniture that desperately needed a makeover anyway.  That’s what Susan started with when she was asked to redo this heirloom dresser for a client. The before picture doesn’t show the half of the damage that this thing had suffered.  But now …

Wood and Coastal Blue Chest

Stunning. Gorgeous. That wood grain, the gold hardware, ugh! I can’t take it, it’s so lovely. She’d better watch out, Grandma’s going to want this back.

“I’d like to hide a valve.”

Did I ever tell you the sad story about my water valve? That’s not a very exciting intro, sorry. Let me spice it up a bit with a click-bait worthy headline.

“When I heard her sad water valve story, I was shocked, but what she showed me next BLEW MY MIND.” Better?

Ok, so for some dumb reason our builder put our water valves right in front of our house. That means any random person walking down the street can saunter right up to the house and flip all the water to the house off or on. And one night someone did exactly that. Only it wasn’t our main water valve, it was the one that goes to the sprinkler system. So we had no idea. Not until a few weeks later, when all of our plants and trees and lawn started dying. We consulted our landscaping timers, and everything seemed to be operating just fine. (Never considering that even though the sprinklers were set correctly, they had no water with which to sprinkle.)

We finally figured it out, but by then we had lost a lot of plants and all our grass. I was super peeved. Apparently a flippant pack of valve-flipping teens had been striking homes all across the neighborhood.

I vowed to build some kind of ‘safe box’ around the valves. Not only to protect myself from this ruthless band of sprinkler-squelchers, but because it just looks so much more attractive than a bunch of pipes and boxes and valves protruding forth from the wall.

Tasha knows what I’m talking about. She disguised this mess of electrical panels and wires just outside her door, and it looks phenomenal!

No one will be tripping her switches now! They’ll just be straight trippin’ at how cool it looks.  (I am way too old and unhip to be saying that, don’t worry, I know).

Captains of Industrial

Sometimes you guys send me makeovers that I love so much, I immediately hop over to craigslist to see if I can find myself the same thing to makeover too.  I am usually unsuccessful and then I start looking at the ‘free’ section, and then next thing I know an hour has gone by and I haven’t done anything productive at all. So thanks for nothing, craigslist.

Anyway, in this case the search I was after was “library cart” because I LOVE how this one from Naomi and Sage at Plaster & Disaster turned out. I didn’t find one, so please join me as I stare lustfully at theirs instead.

White Library Cart

Simple white, a little gold detail on the casters, but did you notice the best part?

library cart shelf

Since the shelves are angled down, they built little wedge shelves to make an even surface for displaying non-book items! Those gals are SMART.  Check out their blog for the whole how-to.

And Angie streamlined her little industrial cart with a unifying coat of spray paint in Soft Iron.  Because there’s a difference between looking industrial and looking like you stole it from your high school’s AV equipment closet.

The magic here is all in her styling, so be sure to check out her blog at Postcards from the Ridge for all the details.

And keeping the industrial train a-rolling, check out this little cabinet from Lucy. Does it look industrial to you at all? Even a little bit? No?

How about now? Yep, that’s the SAME cabinet, and all she added was paint and nailheads! It looks so genuinely metal, even rusting around the edges. Well done Lucy!

Subtle Drama

If you want to add some drama to your home, the powder room is a good place to start. First, slap your mother-in-law in there. NO! That’s not the kind of drama I meant. Don’t do that. What I mean is that it is a good place to start because it’s small enough to make a big impact with a low budget.

First, paint the entire thing in an aggressive orangey red.  NO! That’s also not the kind of drama we want.

That’s what Nina at Everyday Enchanting started with, but believe it or not, you can add tons of drama with just a few elegant touches.

And you can even use soft neutrals and still be dramatic too.

I’m pretty sure this room elicits many ooohs and ahhhs from her guests, which is exactly the right kind of drama we are after all along.

Sofa So Good

If you watch any home decorating show for any period of time, you are sure to hear the professional designers tell you that “Sofas should be nice and neutral. Leave the patterns and wacky stuff to the pillows and accessories.” Yes, fine. That’s good advice. Sure.

But does that rule apply 100% of the time? No way flambe. Sometimes you want to be like Laura from Laura Thoughts who reupholstered this loveseat and said, “I wanted to go with something dramatic, I wanted a statement piece, something showy and not even a little bit safe.”

Not even a little bit safe! Ha! I love it. Let’s see how it turned out …
Green Sofa Before 1

Green Sofa

That sound you just heard was Laura nailing it. Didn’t she do a great job? She also replaced the old legs – which appear to have been made from hunks of raw lumber – with a curvy new set.

But wait! There is literally more!

Laura also shared her talents with this droopy couch, which actually had nice bones if you could look past that tragic fabric and general air of Dirty College Dorm that it was giving off.

Aqua Quatrefoil Sofa

Quatrefoil for the win! So chic. And doesn’t it look better with two large cushions instead of four little ones? And wouldn’t it look even better with buttons? If you think so, then hop on over to her blog Laura Thoughts because (spoiler alert!) she added buttons.

Don’t feel bad if all this sofa-gazing has you wishing you had room to squeeze a cute little sitting area into some corner of your house too. Why not put one outside? And why not make it out of a cast iron bathtub? Anything is possible, if you put your mind to it. And your cement saw.

Tub to Outdoor Sofa Before

Tub to Outdoor Sofa

Isn’t this the CUTEST? Ariean had a cast iron tub that had followed her around for too long, and one day her husband gave her an ultimatum: figure out something to do with the darn tub or it goes. So she did! After much cutting and grinding and painting and sewing, she created a one-of-a-kind bathtub-sofa for her patio.

I also love her fearless choice of fabrics, mixing patterns like nobody’s business. Because it isn’t! If you want to mix fabrics and patterns and have a non-neutral sofa, then who’s to say you can’t? I say you go for it girlfriend.

Steal-Your-House-a-Vision

Remember on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, when Willy Wonka sends a giant candy bar through the air like a TV signal, and the people across the room reach inside their TV screen and pull it out? I’m just wondering, is that technology available yet? I’ve been waiting a long time.

Because I’d really love to reach inside my screen and pull out Clarita’s house and keep it for myself. It’s 2015. This should be possible by now.

White Cottage Exterior Before

White Cottage Exterior

I want to take my family photos in the yard, and decorate the front door for Christmas, and hang out with my neighbors on the porch swing, and never move away ever. It’s perfect and I want it to be mine, all mine.

C’mon Wonkavision! Exist already!
