Room of SHAME

Somewhere within your home, beyond your welcoming entryway, down the hall from your stylish living room, past your sparkling kitchen … there … hidden behind neatly closed doors, do you have a ROOM OF SHAME?
A room you wouldn’t dream of letting your guests see? A room perhaps only half-painted, furnished with whatever survived your college apartment, piled high with clutter you’ve been meaning to get a handle on, sometime, someday? And, as often is the case, is this room YOUR VERY OWN BEDROOM?
Stop punishing yourself! Get in there and make it fabulous! What the heck are you waiting for? Here is some inspiration for a visual kick in the pants:

Beyond stunning! From Amanda at Casa Brasi.

Hoo boy! We can thank Mendy from Mother is a Verb for this great redo, and for coining (and truly defining) the phrase “room of shame!”

From ho-to-the-hum to SHA-JAZZ! From Kelly at Tearing Up Houses.

Thanks so much ladies!

I column like I see ’em

“Lindsey,” you say, “you’ve done it again. You’ve mixed up the pictures somehow. There is absolutely no way this before is related to this after!”
“Naysayers,” I reply, “I would never deceive you! This before shelf is indeed one and the same as the after shelf!”
“No!” you gasp, “it can’t possibly be! How could that plain old shelf go from storing copious amounts of garage stuffs to a stunning entryway focal point?”
Lindy from Cottage Hill says she did it like this: “I secured it to the wall and floor and wrapped it with leftover hardwood flooring. Then I added trim to the front, top, and bottom, and also added doors with glass. I got the column when I laid down in front of my neighbor as he was taking it out to the trash.”

“Wow, that’s amazing!”

“I KNOW. The only things I ever see my neighbors take to the trash are pizza boxes.”

Asher’s Nursery

Krystle didn’t have much space to work with for her son Asher’s nursery. It was a mere 6’x9′ , teensy weensy! So, since she couldn’t cram much in there other than the very basics, she decided to give them as much impact as possible.
I’d say it’s just about perfect! Check out the entire room on her blog Diamond in the Thrift and an adorable pic of the man-of-the-hour himself, baby Asher!

And here’s a look inside! Love the polka dots!

Frankly, my dear…

Ok, you might have to stare at this one for a while, tilt to the side and scratch your head. Indeed, it does not appear to make sense.
What you are looking at before is a very grand, but very useless staircase. Sure, it makes a dramatic impression, but there’s only so many times you can sweep theatrically down it in a formal gown before the neighbors start talking.

“Look Myrna. There she goes again.”

“I just don’t understand it, she’s only coming out to weed the garden!”

“Well, she’s got to make use of that fancy staircase somehow, I guess.”

So Sue, decided to heck with that, and turned her grand foyer (you must pronounce that fohYAAAY) into a comfortable, functional living space.

And as if that wasn’t enough, she tackled the outdated bathroom too, by warming up the tile and paint and saying farewell to the gold accents of yesteryear. Great job, thanks Sue!

Most Marvelous Moya

When I first saw these submissions from Moya, I literally gasped out loud, then let loose a deep longing sigh. All kinds of guttural noises were happening up in here.
I just absolutely love her sense of style, and even asked her if she could download me a copy and insert it into my brain.
The sofa was a handed down piece, very sturdy and well made, but in need of a fresh look. She chose to have it redone in a navy velvet with contrasting piping. It’s a very cool, very subtle nautical look.
Secondly, observe her fantastic kitchen redo. If I was scouring the real estate listings and came across that galley kitchen in the before pic, it would have been a deal breaker. Compare that to the after picture, and I’d be paying them to let me live there!
Check out the sofa redo on her site DIY with ADD HERE, and the kitchen redo HERE. Thanks Moya!
