Good Day, Parquet

Many of us dream of pulling up our scuzzy carpet only to discover an original hardwood floor hiding beneath. But what if that hidden hardwood floor was a yellowish 70’s parquet? Nooo! That’s like winning the lottery only to discover the jackpot is six bucks.

Better After reader Wendy decided she’d much rather painstakingly pull up all her carpet, tacks, etc, then prime and paint her floors then spend one more minute looking at that parquet. She says, “I’m 59, so this project is a bit of a challenge, but I think the results are worth it. I’ve even learned how to miter trim to replace the quarter round that was ripped out when the carpet was installed 19 years (blech) ago! I’m especially happy that I now have a dust-free environment for the grandchildren.”

Orange Harvest

Here in sunny Arizona, it is citrus harvest time. Our grapefruit tree is doing great, but our orange tree yielded one whole orange this year, (which my MIL just went and helped herself too, but I’m totally not bitter). Kind of a bummer. I don’t think that tree gets enough sun or something.

But this dresser cheers me up with its fresh coat of white paint and orangey goodness on the handles. The perfect combo. See it hard at work in Erin’s nursery (or actually, Erin’s child’s nursery) on her blog Thats Loverly. Dresser makeover is HERE.

Teeny Bopper

As a teenage girl, I probably would have been pleased as punch with this before bedroom. Bright colors! Cute guy posters! That about covered my teen girl room requirements. But Suzanne’s daughter was ready for a more pulled-together look.

They ditched Edward and Jacob and pulled in some brightness and lightness with white curtains, linens and nightstands. It really helped tone down the purple, but now she has informed her mother that she wants a blue/grey paint color instead. What do you think? I love that color, but I think the purple plays off the green and white so nicely now too. Check it out on Suzanne’s blog Pennies a Day Decorating.

Plead Your Case

I always have such high hopes of getting organized at the start of a new year. Somehow it never seems to happen. Everything I do gets undone before I can finish, so next thing I know, it’s July and I’ve been trying to organize and declutter all year but somehow I end up right back where I started.

But here’s a cute organizational project I could probably handle by Thuy at Marsh Creek Lane, who redid her cluttery bookcases into a streamlined set with the help of some wrapping paper from Target and cohesive accessories. Much better! Thanks Thuy!

White Lining

This before dresser was certainly nothing special, I bet you could pull up Craigslist right now and find several exactly like it. The most notable thing about it to me is that my grandma has almost the exact same piece in her guest room.

What would she think of the after? With a coat of navy and some painstaking outlining, Better After reader Megan transformed it into a total showstopper! I think Gram would love it, as do I!
