Good Day, Parquet

Many of us dream of pulling up our scuzzy carpet only to discover an original hardwood floor hiding beneath. But what if that hidden hardwood floor was a yellowish 70’s parquet? Nooo! That’s like winning the lottery only to discover the jackpot is six bucks.

Better After reader Wendy decided she’d much rather painstakingly pull up all her carpet, tacks, etc, then prime and paint her floors then spend one more minute looking at that parquet. She says, “I’m 59, so this project is a bit of a challenge, but I think the results are worth it. I’ve even learned how to miter trim to replace the quarter round that was ripped out when the carpet was installed 19 years (blech) ago! I’m especially happy that I now have a dust-free environment for the grandchildren.”

Awesome! That looks fantastic! I would love to know what kind of primer and paint Wendy used on her floor. We are contemplating painting our kitchen floor but I’m still a little chicken about it because I’m not sure what paint to use, and if it would hold up in a high-traffic kitchen with shoes/pets/dropping things/etc…

Love it. We also painted some grotty wood floors in our home and the results were exactly what we wanted.

Fantastic! I love the rug too. Is that a store bought one or did she paint that too?

aww, i love my parquet. i had never seen floors like that before we bought our home, and i think they add character. clearly i’m not a designer, and this new room looks awesome with the darker floors. just wanted to give a supportive fist pump to some of those other parquet floors out there!

Lindsey, my jaw just dropped on the floor. I’m not a parquet fan either but I couldn’t image what painting it would come out like. FABULOUS ~ Absolutely fabulous!!! I’m in awe and bow to you. You go girl!

    Hugs…Tracy 🙂

Aw, what’s wrong with parquet?! I like my parquet, but I do admit the paint looks good – I’ll keep this idea in my back pocket if I ever tire of them. Would love to know more details about how she did it.

    Wendy here..
I user a latex primer, then three coats of latex porch and floor paint, colour “Espresso”. I’ve read on the web that some people put a couple of coats of clear poly on top as well, but the paint is holding up very well, and I don’t think it’s necessary.
The carpet is a Walmart cheapie–39 bucks!
