Side Effects

Searching for a place to set down that glass of eggnog?  Search no more!  Some sweet side table makeovers are coming your way!  (Tangent: What are your feelings about eggnog?  I think it’s kinda good, but yesterday a friend described it as “like drinking congestion” and now I think I’ve changed my mind.)
Anyway, onward we go to this fantastic drum table Melissa at Shabby Perfection found for a measly $8.99 and chalk-painted into show-off shape! Specifically the color is Duck Egg Blue, by Annie Sloan in case you were curious or just wanted to talk about eggs some more.



And here Better After reader Amber shares her $5 garage-sale find that was in such sad shape it actually appeared to be weeping.  She painted, stained, distressed and added pink crystal knobs, plus a bit of Oil Rubbed Bronze to the brass handle, and it cries no more!

 

And finally, one of my favorite styles of furniture (although the Gods of Finding-Awesome-Campaign-Furniture-in-Thrift-Stores-for-Like-12-Bucks have yet to answer my prayers, thus I don’t actually own any) gets a fresh and funky makeover courtesy of Emily from Go Haus Go.

I love the gold, I love the green, I love the whole darn thing!

Bench-of-mark

I’m currently reading a book called The Maid. It’s a fictional retelling of the story of Joan of Arc (not to mention a distant cry from my typical reading material: celebrity biographies.  Seriously.  It might actually be an illness. I’ve read them all!  Except only about 20 pages of David Archuleta’s.  Sorry kid, you’re cute and everything, but no one should be writing their memoirs at age 19!  It’s boring!)
Annnnyway, this old bench totally reminds me of a part in the aforementioned book where two men are discussing the “attributes” of Joan like they were buying a horse or something:  “She’s not much to look at, but she’s sturdy.  Good birthing hips.” Same goes for this bench.  Minus the birthing hips part.
But Sara and Stacy from SugarScout worked their magic and made her more than just a sturdy seat; she really stands out in a crowd now!

Craft Happens

Bambi is the type of gal who lives in a bright green house; thus Bambi was not at all content with her drab patio.  It lacked the three C’s: color, cohesiveness and charm.  I just made up the three C’s, but hey, they make sense.  She made all kinds of DIY changes up in here, from adding a heavy-duty corrogated plastic roof to a lemonade bar to a purple flamingo!  Bambi seems pretty fun.  Maybe I’ll invite myself over to her new patio sometime.

Keeping it Under Wraps

Nothing was wrong with Gina’s daughter’s little chandelier at all — except one thing.  It was giving off a “sultry and sheer” vibe in a room that was supposed to be “sweet and cutesy and like, four-hundred light-years away from anything that might vaguely appear to be sultry, DO YOU HEAR ME YOUNG LADY?!”

So Gina found an alternative to dismantling the whole scandalous thing: simply wrapping the shade in fuzzy nylon yarn! Pretty!  Playful! And cheap! See more on her blog A Sense of Design.

Grandma Wary

This makeover was submitted by someone calling themselves “Teresa,” who even claims to own the blog Teresa D Boyd,  but it looks verrrrry suspiciously like my Grandma Jerry’s kitchen.  Hmmm, strange.
The only logical explanation I can come up with is that Grandma Jerry finally heard our decades of gentle prodding about her overly outdated kitchen and decided to do something about it.  So she stopped being confused by computers, managed to create a blog AND and an alias just so she could share her hard work with the world without having to succumb to her pride and admit that she’d been wrong all these years, that her kitchen really did need an update and she loves it so much better now, she just wishes she would have done it sooner.  And she also started drinking coffee.  Probably to throw me off her scent.  Oh I’m on to you, Grandma.

Jess to Impress

Let’s see what our pal Jesse from Nine Red has been up to lately!  Jesse is one of the most prolific furniture refinishers I know; the guy never stops! But not only that, he always finds a way to keep things interesting.  There’s always a unique little twist to his projects like, say …
 … hexagons!  You might not know it yet, but soon we will all be decorating with hexagons.  It’s probably going to be the official shape of 2012, I can feel it.  Check that out HERE.

Jesse is already hip to the up-and-coming colors that we’ll be raving about in six months, as evidenced by this jade mirror.  Move over turquoise!  He’s kind of like your older cousin who always knew the coolest bands wayyy before everyone else, like remember that one time when you were in sixth grade and your cousin asked you if you liked AC/DC and you were like, “Um … yeah! Of course! I LOVE her!”  And then later you figured it out and felt really embarrassed for yourself?  No?  Ok then …

Look, a chalkboard on the back!  That crafty Jesse!

And here’s a console table that pays homage the Navajo Nation, or at least, the Neo-Navajo trend sweeping the nation.  A very classy and understated take on it here, Frank Lloyd Wright would be proud!  Thanks Jesse!
