Prefab Rehab

The ’90s called. They don’t want their orange-toned cabinets back. The ’90s called because they’re in rehab and currently taking steps to make amends. They don’t know what they were thinking with all that orange, and they want to apologize.

Roxanne knew it was time to let go of the past too. Her kitchen was so overrun with honey oak, it might as well have been wearing scrunchies and watching TRL. Let’s see how she brought it up to speed.

White Kitchen with Subway Tile

White on white, subway tile, glossy quartz counters, stainless steel appliances … welcome to … whatever we call this decade!  (Seriously, what do we call ourselves right now? Two thousand and teens? Help.)

Roxanne and her husband made the most of their budget by doing a lot of the work themselves. Did you know you can save around $500 just by ripping out your own countertops?

One of my favorite changes (no surprise here) is adding uppers to the cabinets. Such a surefire way to make a builder-basic kitchen look high-end, every time!

They also ripped out most of the pantry to make way for a larger fridge, but managed to maximize what was left with a pull-out cabinet. You can see more of that on her blog The Honeycomb Home.

Didn’t it turn out great? Add it to your “Honey, I want to paint the kitchen white, it will be awesome, here’s proof” file.

No one can argue with that.

Beach, Please

My mother loves the beach right down to her bones, but sadly, she lives far, far from the beach. Does that stop her from displaying a full-size surfboard in her house? No, it does not. If you can’t have the beach, bring the beach to you. Why not? Who cares?

Your current furniture has the potential for beachy vibes, it just might need a coat or two of chalk paint like this armoire from Jennifer and Vicki at 2 Bees in a Pod.

But really, white paint is a great vibe neutralizer. You can have any vibes you want from here. Beachy? Check. Rustic? Check. Shabby Chic? Sure. French country? You got it. Modern? Kinda sorta. That one depends more on the furniture itself.

But back to the beach. Before, this dresser was giving off zero beach vibes. Negative beach vibes. You don’t need that in your life. Terrible for your feng shui.

Vicki and Amy at Canary Street pictured it with a weathered coastal look instead. Do you think they achieved their vision? (Spoiler alert: Of course they did).

It looks like it just washed up on the beach! If perfectly intact dressers ever washed up on the beach, which – so far – has not happened in my lifetime. But I did find a dead squid once. Wait, now that I think about it, it was just seaweed that looked kind of like a squid.

ANYWAY. They used on of my favorite tricks, filling up the gaps in the drawers with wood filler to make them look like three normal drawers and not nine crazy drawers of various sizes. A lot of effort, but definitely worth it. Great job ladies!

Superb Appeal

Here’s a tragic story to start your day. All of the plants in my front yard are dead for some terrible, unknown reason.

The reason is that I did not water them. Apparently plants need water or something.

But it’s not really my fault because they are supposed to be on a dripper system. However, it seems you should turn that system up a little more when the temperatures hover around 120 WHO KNEW.

So now all the plants in my yard are dead and the neighbors surely hate me and it’s depressing to drive up to my house every day. THE END.

That’s not actually the end. I wouldn’t do that to you and your morning. Here is a happy front yard story.

Amy at My Life From Home had a perfectly nice front porch, but thought it could use a little more curb appeal.

So that’s what it got! It looks completely refreshed with nothing more than flowers and accessories. That’s basically all I need too. Give me flowers and new sunglasses and I’m a brand new woman. Maybe even one remembers to water her plants.

Leanne at Diva of DIY had also decided her yard needed some extra oomph. Her old patio set was the Official Patio Set of DrabTown, and if you know Leanna at all, you know that is simply unacceptable.

DrabTown is now a distant memory, fading further and further into the review mirror thanks to chalk paint, chevron tape and most mysteriously of all … Bondo?!

I’m getting good vibes.

I love finding a new-to-me blog, and I reckon you do too. There is always, ALWAYS something new out there to discover in the blogosphere. Which begs the question: Are there too many blogs? Um, I’m sorry, but does anyone walk into a library and say “Whoa! There are too many books in here!” No they do not. Blogs are the best. High-five your favorite blog today.

Back to this new-to-me blog. It’s called Designing Vibes, written by Erica, who has impeccable style and is also too gorgeous to be an actual human person. She has dubbed her aesthetic ‘rustic coastal modern,’ which looks as dreamy as it sounds. Let’s take a peek at her entryway makeover for example:

Light and Bright Entry Way Before

Light and Bright Entry Way makeover

Such a great change without any huge dramatic effort. Just new paint, lighting and decor. The flooring and the doors remained the same, but look right at home now in the ‘rustic coastal’ mix.

Erica is in the process of transforming her entire home, a rancher built in the eighties with plenty of charm. And plenty of opportunity for upgrades, like any home built 30+ years ago. Her kitchen looks like it got a total overhaul …

But again, it’s mainly cosmetic changes. The flooring and counters remain the same, and the cabinets have been repainted, not replaced. Budget friendly without looking budget friendly? That’s my jam.

Her dining room is probably my favorite makeover of all. Before, so many ’80s country decor cliches were happening: wallpaper border, hunter green on beige color combo, light fixture possibly stolen from an old-timey saloon, but now?

Hello gorgeous! Erica is a natural at mixing styles and textures, pulling off a room that is as elegant as it is cozy and welcoming. Everywhere you look there is something enjoyable for your eyeballs to land on. Dreamy!

Much more to see of her dining room here.

Happy weekend friend!

Safety in Numbers

Where would we be without numbers? How would you know what button to press on an elevator? Or how many servings are in a pint of ice cream? What would you say to dial in case of an emergency? Bottom right button, top left button, top left button? Don’t be crazy.

No, numbers are our hardworking friends. You should put them on your furniture to say thank you.

Here’s one fine example from Terry at The Curator’s Collection.

White Numbered Desk

Before, a dated desk. Plain and unattractive. But after a fresh coat of paint and a set of numbers on the drawers, WATCH OUT. This desk is cute and it knows it.

Larissa could have done a number of different things to her old dresser … but after crunching the numbers … she figured the number one option was …

Numbers! Did you see that coming? Say no.

Such a great change! Not only are the numbers a great touch, but I’m loving how the paint color picks up the same tones as the new metal handles. It makes for a very cohesive, intentional look. Nicely done Larissa.

She’s a Super(re)Model

Hey gang. How’s your summer? How have you been hanging in there? I’m limping along over here. Sure, I don’t know what day it is (Tuesday? Saturday?) or what time it is (lunchtime? bedtime?) or who I am, or where I put that thing, or if I left the oven on, but do you know what?

No really, do you?

Because I lost my train of thought somewhere in there.

The point is, summer delivers a solid throat-punch to me every year, and this year is no different. But there is a light at the end of this eternal, blistering hot summer-tunnel. I forget what it is, but it’s there. I know, because apparently I’ve survived summer before.

And I may have possibly featured this fabulous bathroom remodel before. I honestly can’t remember. What do you say we enjoy it like it’s the first time though, OK? Maybe it is!

White and Black Bathroom Before

White and Black Bathroom

Roeshel at DIY Show Off is the mastermind behind this gorgeous bathroom. It looks to me like everything was gutted except the only thing worth keeping: the thick trim around the window. It’s so calming and serene now. I basically want to hide out in here until school starts, is that so bad?
