If wandering through Ikea has taught me anything, it’s that I can’t resist a good meatball. No. Not that. Well, yes that, but mainly that a small living space forces you to get creative. If you’ve never been to Ikea, their showroom is made up of fully designed ‘homes,’ ranging from around 100 square feet to 900 square feet. Each inch has been planned to perfection for maximum usefulness. Even if you don’t live in such tight quarters, it’s inspiring to see all the ways you can get the most out of your own space.
Living in a 1200 sq foot home, Roxanne found her own creative solution to space limitations by converting her garage into a living room!
She and her husband worked on it as time and budget allowed, completing the whole project in two years. They added a window on the opposite wall (not shown), bumped out a portion of the walls to keep the electrical panels easily accessible and added an electric fireplace to help with heating. You would never guess it used to be a garage!
What do you think? Would you sacrifice garage space for living space? I would. Does my car need to lay on the couch after a long day and watch Project Runway? Not as much as I do.
See the whole process on Roxanne’s blog The Honeycomb Home.

October 31, 2016 at 1:39 PMThat looks great! I don’t think I would convert a garage to living space, though. I like having a garage for project space. 🙂

November 2, 2016 at 6:59 AMWould never do this. I need a garage way more than extra space.

November 2, 2016 at 9:59 AMWe already don’t use our garage as a garage. But it’s not living space… it’s my husband’s woodworking shop with tools and drills and wood storage and lots of mess. As an self-employed cabinetmaker it’s an absolutely vital working space.
Just checked out her blog and they had to insulate and sheetrock. And it’s a nice big space really… there’s a seating area at the other end.

January 1, 2017 at 11:55 AMlove this idea.. my husband also uses the garage as a working area.. if thinking about doing this divide it into smaller rooms… our garage was built in the 50’s when ext. cab trucks and such didnt exist.. so in no way would our garage ever be used for parking… we live in ohio… snow and ice are just part of winter life…
