The Plight of White

Believe it or not, there are people out there who don’t like white kitchens. I know. It’s true. Wrap your arms around yourself and pretend I’m giving you a consoling hug. It’ll be OK.  These people think white is too blah. Too sterile. Too cold. To commonplace. Too trendy.

But guess what? It’s a little-known fact that the kitchen cabinets in Buckingham palace have always been white. So there’s your proof that white cabinets are not just a flash in the pan trend. (So what if I just made that fact up, how do you know it’s not true?) Besides, white can’t be trendy. It’s white! Does anyone go around yelling at the clouds for being such a stupid trendy color? No.

I think we’ve derailed here.  Let’s back up. White doesn’t have to mean cold and sterile. I love how Michelle brightened up this kitchen with white cabinets, but she kept the original backsplash which helps maintain a lot of warmth. And you can always add in any color you want with accessories! Grand total here (not counting the new countertops): $200!

    I like this. It looks super clean, and the yellow is a perfect addition. The nice thing about white kitchens is that you can accessorize with any color.

    I love white and think this makeover looks great! Another little known fact, I had all white cabinets in the early 90’s and a white tiled counter top:) I miss that little kitchen.

    The new countertops go with the existing backsplash so well and the accessories pick up on the yellow / beige from the backsplash and make the whole kitchen amazing. Michelle = rock star color coordinator!

    Very pretty! The ceiling looks like it was raised, too. The crown molding on the top of the cabinets on the first picture touch the ceiling, but they look to be 4-6 inches below it in the 2nd picture.

    I looked in the comments of the original blog and it says that the homeowner raised the ceiling himself! And eliminated the blech texture.

    I don’t actually see how “sterile” can be such a bad thing for a kitchen. I love the white. I’d paint my cabinets white except for the fact that I really don’t like the door style, so I’d go to a lot of trouble to have a kitchen that I still wasn’t happy with.

    Darling Lindsey, It is always SUCH a pleasure to featured here at Better After! Thank you so much. My clients did such a good job of painting their kitchen & executing our design plans. The homeowner is very handy raised the ceiling himself! Doing all their own work kept their remodeling costs very low. I agree that white is a classic. I have had many white kitchens myself & they seem to never go out of style. In this particular home, there was WAY too much wood, so painting some of it has really helped to update the decor. Have a great day! {I’m off to Google what color the kitchen is in Buckingham Palace!}
    Warmly, Michelle
