New Floor Reveal!

Hey gang! I’m wrapping up the saga of my new flooring today, can I get a woo-hoo?

Previously, on The Story of My New Floors, I left you with a cliffhanger.  Was tearing out tile and ripping up carpet going to be the death of me?

Kinda sorta yeah. It was the worst. And for a long time my house looked like this:

tearing up carpet

But now …

living room driftwood floor

It looks like this! Hooray and yay!

Everything is installed and put back together and we are loving it.  I’ll share a few more details at the end of the post, but for now, pictures!

The kitchen floor used to consist of this uninspiring 12×12 gray tile. It really seemed like the type of flooring you’d find in the waiting room at Big-O Tire or like, the bathrooms at Jack-in-the-Box.

Oh yeah. That’s an improvement.

I hated this area where the carpet from the hallway met the kitchen.  It was a one-way ticket to Grossville on the Grunge Express.

Now it’s just one solid expanse of floor! It makes the house feel so much bigger now that the flooring extends all the way down the hall.

This hallway is like the main artery of the house. It goes from the front door to the kitchen with the living room and laundry room on one side, and the office and dining room on the other, so it’s nonstop foot-traffic through here all day everyday.  And sometimes scooter traffic. Carpet just can’t handle that.

But let me be really real with  you. I’m about to hit you with some truth. There is something I can’t stand about these floors. Can you see it?

transition piece

THIS TRANSITION PIECE. It seems like a little thing, but I can’t get over it. The type of flooring we used is considered a ‘floating floor’ and basically as far as I understand it, the amount of area we wanted to cover was greater than the flooring specifications allowed, so a transition piece was necessary to combat any shifting and spreading of the planks. It’s a little strip that matches the flooring perfectly, but it’s slightly raised, and to me is glaringly obvious. Much more obvious than the picture shows.

However, I learned from a flooring expert that there are ways of possibly getting around it. Of course I learned this now that everything is said and done.  But I have some ideas floating around of ways I can potentially change this so it doesn’t make me so cranky. And crazy. Crankzy. It’s a thing.

BUT! The other 99% of my floor I truly am happy and in love with.  And it’s definitely a step up from what we had before.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions I’ve received about my floor:

What is the name of your flooring?  Delaware Bay Driftwood by Lumber Liquidators.

What kind of flooring is it? 10mm laminate with pre-attached pad

Laminate? Oh no! Haven’t you heard the news??  Yes, I’m aware of the big laminate flooring controversy raging right now. I talked about it in my last post. Going into this, I had no idea about any of the allegations and claims against Lumber Liquidators.  The news broke about two days after my floors were installed. It was kind of a nightmare. Fortunately, my particular flooring was not affected. My advice is to just to inform yourself as much as possible and make the best decision you can for you and your family! I do believe that laminate flooring is safe, and I know there are tons of regulations and tests in place that are supposed to ensure that. You are also just plain better off choosing products that are made in the USA vs. China.

Whew. Ok. I feel better. So, is it hard to keep clean? What about footprints? I think it really depends on your finish, not so much on laminate vs. hardwood.  My parents used to have a super glossy hardwood floor, and you could see every single speck and smudge.  I specifically chose a very matte finish for this reason.  So far, so good! I clean it with just water, using an ever-so-slightly damp mop.

I heard that laminate makes a ‘hollow’ sound when you walk on it, is that true?  In some cases, yes. However, my flooring came with a pre-attached underlayment, and also features a thicker, sound-reducing core, so I haven’t noticed a hollow sound at all.  There are also many different types of pads you can lay underneath to help cancel out sounds.

Is laminate extra slippery? Again, I think that just depends on your finish. It’s no more slippery than my parent’s hardwood floor.

Is it safe to put laminate in the kitchen? What if it gets wet? Laminate has made some big strides in the past, and is more durable and water-resistant than ever. My particular brand came recommended for moist, high-traffic areas like the kitchen and even the bathroom.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and I’m happy to share my answers!

We have laminate (Pergo) in our entire house, and I love it! It’s not as soft of the feet as real plank hardwood, but it’s so low-maintenance. Furniture slides with ease, and doesn’t scratch the finish. The only bad thing we’ve found so far is that if you do get water damage and have to replace part of it, you pretty much have to replace the entire room. They change the designs/patterns/colors every couple of years, so it’s impossible to go buy more of what you initially put in. You can’t just pop out a few bad boards and replace them with new ones. Thankfully, our damage was in a 10×11 bedroom, so not very big. We have the transition pieces too, and yeah… I don’t love them. They do keep the replacement floor from touching the original, though, so it’s not obvious that the newer floor isn’t an exact match. 😉

Oh, I should have noted that we do have tile in our kitchen and bathrooms. After having water damage from a leaking hot water heater, I don’t think I would do laminate in the kitchen or bathroom. Or, if we did, I would buy extra boxes to keep on hand in case replacements were needed down the line.

Your new floor is gorgeous!! I love it and it is totally you.

We have a transition piece where the wood in the hall meets the carpet in the bedroom. That thing is the biggest headache. It’s no longer attached and I trip over it all the time. We leave it in place as otherwise there’s a gross, gaping open strip between the hall and bedroom. Hopefully, yours will not be an issue.

Love the color and style! Is a rug an option to lay over the transition piece? At least to keep from tripping over it, even if it doesn’t completely hide it. Curious what your ideas are!

This looks absolutely gorgeous! I love the flooring! Wow! I know how hard it is living with the “construction zone” as we finished stage 1 of our bathroom remodel. We haven’t had the extra cash to start stage 2 yet.. but, I’m okay with that–for now. I’m starting to feel the “itch” though! Your home is beautiful and thank you for always sharing the good and the bad with us. And as Sabrina said above …where did you get your sofas??!

I am so jealous…I am in the middle of a complete den overhaul…including floors. We did laminate in the master bedroom and office last fall and now it is time to replace the den flooring. I DREAD IT!!! I just finished refacing the fireplace and now have teal paint stripes on my burnt red accent wall. What a mess but can’t wait to get it all done and share!!! Your floors look wonderful!!!! Again, jealous that yours are done 😉

BTW, my bedroom laminate came from LL…I have not crawled up in the attic to look at the spare box to see where it came from. Honestly, I don’t think I want to know because then I might have to obsess over it and I’m just too busy right now to care. I put an extra pad under my pre-padded laminate to eliminate some of the “noise” factor. Seems to work well except for the dogs toenails…tend to be a little more “clicky” than on the hardwoods in the living areas. I will be putting down a glue down hardwood in the den…just preference honestly but laminate is super easy to care for…unless you have a short haired dog that sheds like a wooly mammoth…then not so much but I suspect that is the case with any floor.. Just happy I no longer have any carpet to collect the nastiness. I would rather see it than know it is there and not be able to get it all up!

The floors look fab, but I MUST know — what great works of literature do you have on your walls??? What a lovely idea, and beautifully done. If am so using this idea, I’m completely in love! Is it a DIY or did you buy them?

Thanks Lindsay! I made those myself, I keep meaning to post a tutorial. They aren’t perfect, so I’d like to get a few kinks worked out first. The left one is a quote from Maya Angelou, and the second one is the lyrics to a Bob Dylan song.

Love this! It looks amazing in your house. We’re actually one week away from installing this exact floor throughout our whole house, so I’ve been doing some more digging to see what it looks like installed. I would LOVE to hear what you recommend in regards to the transition strip-that’s something I know will drive me crazy too!

It’s the color our builder used called Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. It’s a nice neutral with some gray in it, but it can definitely lean towards tan in certain light.

Just went and looked at similar flooring at LL today and was told the same thing about the transition piece. Can you share what you learned about alternatives? The guy looked at me like I had 3 eyes when I referred to the comment in your post above.

It’s called Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. Quite possibly the most boring paint name ever, but a nice slightly grayish neutral!

Now that you’ve lived on your floor for a while, have you had trouble with dirt getting in the grooves? We are thinking of getting this floor but when I looked a the sample down in the store, the grooves looked dirty. The sales rep says that’s because of the high traffic in the store and lack of cleaning. It will drive me crazy if it is dirty, like grout! That is why I want to get rid of my tile in the first place. I have two kids and want to put this flooring throughout my downstairs. Any thoughts, cleaning suggestions?

Hi how did youtransition the stairs? I recently bought the same flooring and came to a crossroads on the stairs. Did you continue the laminate on the stairs or did you wood stain them? I opted to have them stained tops and white faces but I am having trouble picking a wood stain that matches the laminate.

Hi! I am looking into putting these floors in my house and I stumbled across your blog trying to find pictures of the floor. I know this is an old post so hopefully you can still reply…. Your pictures show that there is a good amount of brown tone. Would you say that is accurate? The sample I received looks only gray with no brown tone at all.
And since you’ve had your floors a few years, how are they holding up? Do you still love them?

I have since moved from this house, but they were holding up well. If I could do it again, however, I would choose LVT instead. More durable, looks better, and affordable while looking great.
