Blue Your Mind

If you’re feeling blue, cheer up. I’ve got some blue makeovers today that will turn that frown upside down. What better way to cure the blues than with MORE blue? It’s like fighting fire with fire.  (Where did that saying come from? Does that ever even work? Seems unlikely).

So here is some blue coming atcha, starting with Shanna’s plaster painted dresser. Formerly an overwrought disaster, it looks gorgeous glammed up in a light blue-green shade called Seaside

Just a little polish on the handles was all they needed to stand out and shine too.

See it at Restoration Redoux.

Sonni at Sophia Restoration treated her buffet to the classic combo of blue and silver. Blue-tiful! Sorry. Had to.

This next dresser was a Craigslist score, bought on the cheap from a college kid who was moving and needed to unload it fast. Despite being a solid vintage piece, the veneer was badly damaged, so Erin didn’t feel too guilty about painting it.

I wouldn’t feel bad either. There is burl veneer on there guys. BURL VENEER. It’s the stuff of nightmares. Up close it literally looks like the darkened souls of the deceased, their faces frozen in one last howl before being sucked into the underworld. Here, I googled it for you. Try not to wet your pants.

Ahhh! Much better! Erin also shined up the handles which are the stand-out stars of this piece, and you can see more on her blog DIY on the Cheap.

And finally, one from Christina who fears no wood, nor painting wood in bright saturated hues. That’s exactly what she did to this dresser.  I know some reader’s insides might seize up a little at the thought of painting over a piece like this, but you know what I always say: your furniture is supposed to make you happy, not the other way around!

And this is certainly happy, despite being so blue! Paint color is called Dignity Blue by Sherwin Williams, and you can read more from Christina at Phoenix Restoration.

On the prairie, fire is often fought with fire. When a grass fire burns out of control, firefighters will expand out a ways and start a new controlled fire. It burns back toward the original fire, consuming fuel (i.e., grass) as it burns. When the two fires meet, they die out due to lack of new fuel.

I always say “Someday when I have a home…” but it’s true. Someday I WILL buy/have/find a piece of furniture and repaint it to make it the stand out piece in a room. Either a bold color like this, or with a single graphic to make it amazing. Someday. Right now my tiny half-basement apartment with nothing but a 10×10 cement patio as a work space (currently covered in snow) will not work. But this blog really does inspire something in me.

My blue dresser redo I sent you months ago would have fit perfectly with this post. Next time I guess I’ll have to move my after picture out of the garage. It was in my house briefly before I sold it, but the wall behind it was only half painted so that wasn’t really helping either.

I know! It was so beautiful, and I actually had it ready to go in this post, but I just couldn’t manage to crop out all the background stuff from the garage. So sorry! It really was perfect.

Haha. OMG your comments about burl veneer were hysterical. Your blog is pretty much the only one where I actually read what was written. You are too funny!

There’s a show on Netflix (and whatever original TV channel too, but I don’t know what one) that is about a guy who finds and sells Burls. I had no idea what it was in real life (other than veneer) but did you know it can make you a fortune?! It’s a Dirty Jobs type thing… I can’t remember the real name of the show (sorry!) but it’s worth checking it out.

I have never heard of such a thing! What exactly does a burl look like on its own? How much do they fetch and where can one find them? I must do some investigative research!

Okay I had to check out your google link cause I wasn’t sure what I’d find. Darkened souls of the deceased or burled wood? And indeed they are the same. But did you see that frickin moose???! Someone needs to nip their creative in the bud. All it needs is a lightbulb and it would win your contest, hands down.

Hahahaha, I had not seen the moose until you mentioned it! Oh my gosh, why does it literally make me nauseous? Shut. It. Down.

Lindsey, a burl is a growth on a tree… it looks like a big bump hanging off the outside. Not particularly attractive, but the whirling grain is very prized by some (who don’t mind images of tortured souls in their wood grain). It’s an abnormality and somewhat uncommon, which is why that guy is making money finding and selling them. There’s actually a problem with poachers cutting them off of the redwood tress and badly damaging, even killing the trees!

I thought you said these makeovers were blue? All I’m seeing are white and gold makeovers in the after pics? Ü hahahaha
