I woke up this morning (like 3am this morning) to rain pounding on my roof and wind howling. I stood there in my undies (sorry for the visual) staring out the window for a very long time, and freaking out any neighbors who happened to be awake at the same time and saw my pasty, ghostly self lingering in the window, because rain is a total novelty in Phoenix. How much of a novelty you ask? Well, they canceled school this morning. For rain! I know! It was so bad, they shut down the freeways and Matt couldn’t even drive to work. There was a kid rowing a boat in the park across the street, no joke. Mark your calendars, because the news is calling it the wettest day in state history.
So, I thought this would be an appropriate makeover to share. No, it’s not a rowboat makeover, or anything of the sort, it’s a stunning kitchen from Jenna at Rain on a Tin Roof. She calls her style Vintage Modern Rustic, and I love that she has touches of each one in here. PS: she made the island herself. Be sure to check out her blog to see all the fun details of this space!

September 8, 2014 at 11:09 AMIt started right as I was putting the baby down at 2:15, and I was like, uh, I can’t sleep through this racket. I mean, I did, because hello sleep deprivation, but they ended up telling us not to go in to work. Which is good, because we tried to get to the babysitter’s and had to turn back home. Hundred year flood!

September 8, 2014 at 3:46 PMLindsey, I saw the news this morning about all the rain ya’ll were getting and the flooding from the rain. The pictures they showed were unbieveable. I’m not surprised they closed the schools. It was simply too dangerous. I hope the kids rowing the boat had fun. That’s a hoot!

September 8, 2014 at 4:09 PMIt really was crazy! The rain cleared up around 9 am, but the park across the street is still flooded, cars are still strewn across the freeway. My kids think it’s heaven!

September 8, 2014 at 4:57 PMI’m from a part of Oregon that’s as rainy as Seattle so it’s no novelty to me but I still LOVE it. I live in much drier Spokane now and I miss the rain so much.

September 8, 2014 at 10:50 PMI hadn’t gone to bed yet when I heard the rain about 2:00 AM and it was a couple more hours before I could get to sleep after that. The rain was so loud pounding on my bedroom window. One important thing to note is that our average yearly rainfall is only about 7″ and last night we received over half of that figure all at once. You’d never know it by looking at my neighborhood, though. Other than a few puddles along the curb, it looks like it does every day. The school in the neighborhood was even open.
Now about this kitchen – what an improvement. I think my favorite thing is the island.

September 9, 2014 at 10:09 AMIsn’t it crazy? It dried up here pretty quick too. Now there’s just dried mud everywhere. I can’t imagine other states that have to deal with this on a regular basis. It’s pretty nice that our most extreme weather is a heavy rainstorm and a haboob or two.

September 9, 2014 at 11:05 AMI live in the high desert here in Sunny Southern California. We had the same storm you did, and a few streets were closed here, but no schools. I remember a trip my family made about 50 years ago to Phoenix, and it was about like this. Oh, and we had our own haboob two weeks ago. 🙂 I’ve been following Jenna’s remodel, and it is so awesome!
