Earlier today, I told you the saga of my stolen staple gun. Turns out some of you have ‘accidentally forgotten to return’ a few items yourselves, and have things like a stolen VHS of She’s All That on your consciences too. Ha! So glad I’m not alone.
But to recap, Arrow Fastener recently sent me some new staple guns to try out, and so I thought this little thrift-store chair would be the perfect piece to play with. It had some cool lines and a straightforward design that seemed easy enough to recover. And I wasn’t at all sad to see that original crusty fabric go.
Oooh la la! Do you like that snakeskin embossed leather? So glam! It’s from the Leather Hide Store, and I’ll be sharing more about it next week.
But back to the chair. I was browsing the thrift-store one day when this little guy caught my eye. Peeking through the usual motley line-up of chairs, it was halfway hidden behind a broken folding chair and a wheelchair. I wrangled it out of the mix and was dismayed to discover it cost $39.99! Woah woah woah. Back it up. That was crazy overpriced! Looking closer, the tag showed that the price was for a set of two. I looked and looked, but the other chair was nowhere to be found. I asked a worker if they could reprice it since there was only one, but they would only cut the price in half. So, it was $20, which STILL seems way overpriced to me. Don’t you think? Humbug.
But I bought it anyway, obviously, and it looks pretty cute in its new home, which is next to this old record player that I got to keep from my Grandma’s house after we moved her into an assisted living home. I have so many fond memories of dancing around in front of it when I was little, listening to my grandma’s old records, which definitely explains my affinity for Roger Whitaker and Marty Robbins. Yes, I am an 80-year-old woman at heart. It still sounds awesome too! They really don’t make them like they used to.
Unfortunately, during this project I discovered another thing they don’t make like they used to, which is STAPLES. If you read my last post, you’ll know that the staple gun Arrow Fastener sent me is a model that I’ve used and loved for years. However, the staples I used for this project gave me all kinds of trouble.
I chalked it up to the fact that I was trying to go through two layers of fabric, one being leather, and also because the board beneath them was some sort of super hard material too. I tried several different sizes of staples, and had the same results. They weren’t entirely useless though, they basically got the job done, but it sure isn’t pretty under there. Truthfully, that doesn’t bother me, but if you were recovering furniture to sell or something, I can understand why it would be a problem.
Would I recommend Arrow Fastener tools? Absolutely yes. I’ve been loyal to the brand for years now.
Would I recommend Arrow Fastener staples? Hmmm. I had a frustrating experience this time, and I’ve received some comments from people with the same feelings. I’m sure they’d be fine on a job less intensive than this, as I said, I was giving them quite a workout on this project.
Would I recover a chair with leather again? Yes, because I love the look! But it’s certainly not the easiest material to work with. This particular leather was very thick, so getting around those corners was a bear, but it also has a surprising amount of stretch, which helped hide some of my mistakes.
Would you like to win a custom box of tools from Arrow Fastener? A big box of free tools?! Let me answer that for you. YES! Entering is easy! Simply use the Rafflecopter widget below:
All in all, I’m so happy with the way this little chair turned out. I thought of re-staining the wood, but it happened to match the record player perfectly already, so that worked out nicely. Oh yeah, and it has a surprise too! I didn’t find this out until I had brought it home from the thrift-store:
Fun, huh? I think it was an old sewing chair. Still not sure how it was originally part of a set in that case.
Anway, happy weekend friend! Good luck on the giveaway, I hope you win! Giveaway ends and winners will be announced next Thursday, July 3rd.
<<<This post is in collaboration with Arrow Fastener, all opinions are, as always 100% my own.

This is what you need, along with a pair of needle nose for the broken staples. It halves the removal time of the gross fabric and is 6 million times easier on your hands, too. I love it. Best $20 I ever spent.

June 27, 2014 at 5:58 PMI love the secret compartment in that chair. I think $20 is a good price for a quality chair like that. It really does look great with your grandmother’s record player.
I’ve never had a problem with upholstery staples (the only thing I’ve ever reupholstered was my mother’s piano bench) but I’ve had that problem with regular staples for paper. When I was working in accounts payable, we’d sometimes have really thick documents to staple to the check stubs. The cheap, store-brand staples were too weak and would bend instead of going through the paper. I had to have the office manager order the high quality, name-brand staples for our department. You could probably find heavy-duty upholstery staples somewhere. You can’t be the only one to have this problem.

June 27, 2014 at 7:15 PMMisbehaving staples is what caused me to go out and get an electric staple gun. Beautiful! And your chair looks terrific next to the stereo cabinet! Another great project by Lindsey!

June 27, 2014 at 8:10 PMOk so I kind of love the snake embossed leather thing happening here. I’m totally not a snake person but dang it works on that chair! Great job Lindsey! I agree that $20 is a little shocking for one thrift store chair though. Super curious about its alleged twin…. lol!

June 27, 2014 at 11:29 PMThis turned out very cute, and it’s possible that the reason you could not find the second piece is because it may have been the sewing cabinet that went with it and not a chair at all. My mom had a chair that went with her sewing cabinet that opened like this. I love watching for your before and after shots, keep it up!

June 28, 2014 at 9:22 AMThanks so much! Now that makes total sense. Haha, can’t believe I didn’t think of that, but I guess I didn’t realize it was a sewing chair until I got home anyway.

June 28, 2014 at 4:46 AMYup…that is EXACTLY what every manual staple gun I have bought does…even the electric and pneumatic. Curses! I have to wonder if it is the gauge of the staple…and the smaller the length of the staple, the smaller the gauge. I need a 1/2″ crown x 1/4″ length staple that does not do that…but I can’t find one in a heavier gauge!
HOWEVER, I LOVE that chair…jealous….I knew the minute I saw it it was a sewing chair. I’m thinking that may not be the original fabric on it. Based on the style my guess is it is teak, only because I can’t see the grain to see if it might be walnut. Regardless, I LOVE it…my style. I have stripped and refinished a lot of MC furniture…it isn’t hard on a chair like this and soooo worth it! Not sure if I ever shared this one with you Lindsey, but here is a MC chair I redid…http://beckwithstreasures.com/journal/2014/3/23/mid-century-chair-makeover
You might consider doing both the chair and the cabinet.
Regardless, they are both beautiful!!!!

June 28, 2014 at 8:24 AMI won??? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Roger Whitaker, Marty Robbins, and Ed Ames! Swoon! Now those men could sing. The chair is perfect next to your grandmother’s record player and the vase just pulls it all together. That”s a very lovely After.

June 28, 2014 at 2:01 PMThis is exactly the same chair I got when I was given a Singer Golden Touch and Sew machine and sewing desk and chair in 1970. I still have this chair and use it in my sewing room even though the machine died in the late 90’s. I wore it out!

June 28, 2014 at 11:33 PMThat chair thanks you for its much improved looks. I agree that $20.00 is too dang high for a thrift store. Should be about $5.99. But now it looks like a million so theres that.

June 29, 2014 at 4:09 PMI’ve had the same experience with staple guns for reupholstering side chairs even with thinner fabric. I tend to get out my upholstery hammer and upholstery nails and do it right! 🙂 It’s way less frustrating.

June 30, 2014 at 8:52 AMI’m so glad you showed that picture of decrepit staples. I have the same exact problem, and like another comment, I bought an electric staple gun thinking it would help…and it DID NOT. Considering I literally bleed trying to remove staples from 50+ year old upholstered pieces this has to be poor manufacturing in today’s goods. I have been sorely tempted to go with upholstery nails but usually don’t have the time (or patience).

November 15, 2017 at 4:44 PMI have the original sewing chair that is pictured, it came with my Singer Golden Touch and Sew cabinet, mine is a colonial style., maple in color. My cat used the back of the chair as her exercise stretch machine….so it has become all shredded, I would love to make a new top and seat for it…so you have the plans you did to redo your chair? If so , I would love to have your directions.
