Want to see something trippy?
It’s Jack Black! And Jack White!
They’re like opposites of the same thing! Two sides of the same coin! One known for his comedy and music, the other for his music and … um … other stuff. Yeah. I don’t really know where I’m going with this.
But for some reason they kind of remind me of these dresser makeovers. Two very similar dressers, two similar makeovers, two different results, and I love ’em both. Enjoy.
First of all, this dresser was made over by mee! Yay, I did something. I found this dresser at Goodwill for a mere $20. FINALLY, the thrift store saints smiled upon me and I got a good deal. I snagged it on a 50% off Saturday, and hovered protectively over it for a good 45 minutes until a worker wandered over and gave me a ‘sold’ receipt.
I was heavily pregnant at the time, and not in the mood for a huge makeover, but I didn’t think it needed anything drastic anyway. Just a little white on the drawers to give it some ‘pop’ and a good polishing of the handles. Which were installed upside down. Oh well, you can’t tell.
And Krista at Goodwill Glam also had a modern wood dresser, but she did the opposite version of my makeover: wood drawers, white frame. Great choice, it really shows off that fabulous wood grain on the drawers. Mine was cheesy veneer, nothing to flaunt.
She polished her pulls up nice and bright too, which shows them off so well. We used Brasso on mine, and I was underwhelmed. It took a nice long scrubbing with steel wool to really make them shine. So now you know. Brasso = so-so.
Which look do you like best? My feelers won’t be hurt if you don’t say mine.
Just kidding, they will.
Just kidding again, they wont.
(They totally will).
No no, for reals, they won’t.

February 14, 2014 at 11:01 AMI love ’em both! I need to start haunting my Goodwill to find a nice mid-century dresser. People only seem to give up busted 80’s dressers around here.

February 14, 2014 at 11:36 AMYou win! I like the stained top muchly better. I like them both but the white top would drive me to madness.

February 14, 2014 at 11:48 AMI really like them both. Just enough paint to show off the wood and the wood really balances the white paint.

February 14, 2014 at 1:49 PMI love them both, really! Beautiful pieces of furniture, I wish I had the courage to paint wood…it’s been ‘engrained’ in me for so long that you can’t paint wood, it kills me! I may need an exorcism to get this programming out of me head.
Happy Valentine’s Day Lindsey!!

February 14, 2014 at 5:24 PMOkay, I LOVE the dresser you found, and for $20? What a steal. I like the before, actually, but the after is just a knock out.

February 14, 2014 at 6:03 PMTIMING! I am in the throes of doing an old 1930’s S.O.R.P.U. (that’s side of road pick up) which is making me have sleepless nights. Do the drawers white and the top and bits stained, or do the bits and top white and the rest stained….GAAAH…dilemmas! SO now you show me two separate chest of drawers in the ideas I am thinking about and my brain imploded! Gowdang it! They are both just so ge-oooorrrgeeeeo-US I can’t decide on anything anymore!

February 15, 2014 at 7:48 AMLike others, I do like them both but prefer yours because the abundance of white brightens a room. However, the other one fits its space extremely well, too. I like the white outline of it but not so much the top being all white. It’s creative that both of you could think of something so different than the original look. My mind doesn’t work that way – – but I can copy others fairly well!

February 15, 2014 at 8:10 AMI like both of them, but yours is the BEST as it is for that sweet baby boy! Babies win over booze…or booze helps moms babies? I digress. I love the white drawers and shiny handles. Great job!
