Late Bloomers

There’s a big, fun floral print out these days that seems to be catching on!  I featured it a couple weeks ago HERE, and since then, I’ve seen it popping up again over and over! I wouldn’t know about trendy fabrics, because I live very near Sun City, which, if you don’t know, is a senior citizen mecca.  All the fabric stores around here seem to cater to octogenarians, so there’s a lot of fabric with pastel quilt designs, and horses, and kittens, and things of that nature.  Which is cool … uh, in it’s own way … I guess …


So, I will continue to live vicariously through everyone else and their fabulous fabric choices and upholstery skills.  Like this chair makeover from Missey at RedoPalooza who paid $7 for this ragged chair and had it recovered in the aforementioned big and fun floral print.








 








 











And here it is again!  This time, a stodgy armchair gets florally flaired by Carina, who paid $18 and redid the whole thing herself.  She even sewed new fabric over each of the 27 buttons by hand!  Which, I guess is the only way one could sew new fabric over a button, unless there is some button-recovering foot for the sewing machine that I am unaware of.  What do I know, I’m not a sewist! Herringbone Prone

Michelle had this old faux-wood box that wasn’t doing her eyeballs any favors. She wondered what she could possibly do to pretty it up, but no inspiration struck.  Stumped, she sat it down in the kitchen and decided to take its picture, which she planned to post on Facebook and ask her fellow friends for ideas.  It was then that she noticed the kitchen rug right behind it.  Yes! Why didn’t she see it before? A herringbone pattern in white and gray!  She would painstakingly tape off and paint the box and add decorative edges, and it would be the envy of all her friends! 
Anyway, I made that whole story up.  I have no idea if the kitchen rug influenced her decision at all, or if that picture was even taken in a kitchen.  It could be the laundry room, for all I know. But what matters is it turned out deliciously, and it probably is the envy of all her friends in real life.  I certainly covet it!  See more on her blog Innovative Interior.

Tan Take-down

Lorraine’s living room was overburdened with beige.  The little red candles by the fireplace were fighting valiantly to bring a bit more color into the room, but they were no match for the onslaught of oatmeal and barrage of browns.  So Lorraine banished all that tan with a bright new wall color and some fresh fabrics.  I especially love the fireplace makeover! The new mantle frames it so much better than those strange strips of brick, don’t you think?  Sure you do.  She reports that it’s so much cozier now, her guests all flock to this room more than any other!

Legend of Blue and the Beard

This kitchen makeover comes fresh from the oven of a single-dad who calls himself ‘Beard.’  Beard had a big list of goals and small amount of space to work with; just about 100 square feet. I’d say he did pretty awesome!  Here’s the rundown of what he wanted out of his kitchen reboot: 


Decluttered: check


De-soffited: check


De-smurfed: check


Flooring, fixtures, and counters updated: check


  Dishwasher in non-stupid place: check


  Rosie-the-Robot installation: uh, not check.


(I’d like to be the first to know when that becomes available, however. Oh, heck yes I would.)

Yellow-bellied

I just bought a bookcase from a little old thrift store in Mesa that is about the size of this dresser of Aubrey’s here. As you may know,  just about everything I own or paint or wear is gray or white.  It’s becoming a problem. I would LOVE to try some yellow on my bookcase, but I am sceered! So many shades of yellow out there! What if it ends up looking like a highlighter?  Or urine? Or expired mustard?  But I’m getting ahead of myself. I am still in the stripping phase, and apparently whatever paint was used on it in the past was like, NASA grade, because it’s not budging.  So, SOMEDAY, when I chisel all that mess off, I’ll think about yellow.
Aubrey nailed it with a warm, buttery shade accented with a pretty little stencil down the side.  Inspiring!  Maybe she’ll tell us the exact shade and save me some anxiety in the paint aisle.  See it on her blog The Harris Family.





 








 


 


And Hannah opted for a dash of yellow on her dresser too!  Striped and super cute. Notice how the previous owners had glued the whole thing to a piece of unfinished plywood and added casters?  Yeah, she removed that crap. Now it’s home to all her craft supplies, and you can read more on her blog

Guest Services

I sure wouldn’t have complained if I was a guest in Molly’s former guest room.  It looked great.  Nothing like my current guest room, which is actually my daughter’s bedroom.  When guests come, we just kick her out and scoop the raisins and crackers out of her bed and welcome them in!  We don’t get many guests, for some reason.  (Ok, I’m kidding, I DO change the sheets.  Usually.)





But good enough wasn’t good enough for Molly, so she amped it up with a deep navy on the walls and a few special touches like custom window treatments, a luggage-stand makeover and, neat idea: a picture holder that she says “I like to slip in a snapshot of the people who are visiting me when they stay in the room. Kind of fun. Possibly creepy?”  Ha ha!  I wouldn’t be creeped out at all, Molly!  Only a little!  See more on her site The Nesting Game.
