Black, White, and Gold all over

I was trolling through Pinterest the other day and came across this image that I instantly fell head-over-heels in slobbering love with:

black and gold place setting

Black and white and fancy all over.  Gold? Yes. Stripes? Mmmmhmmm. Mama like.

Then I tried to pin it, and that little message box popped up, “Uh-oh, looks like you’ve already pinned this before!”

Ok, so I guess I really, really liked it, even if I didn’t remember already liking it.  Then I went digging around in a file I keep on my computer of all the inspiring bits and pieces I come across on the internet, creatively labeled “Inspiration File,” and guess what? THE SAME picture was in there too! From like, 2012!

So I thought this was an obvious sign from the universe telling me that I’d better recreate this scene or else probably the apocalypse will start or something. So YOU’RE WELCOME, I made a pretty table setting and saved the universe at the same time.

Here’s my version:

black and white striped napkins

This level of fanciness doesn’t happen everyday at Casa de Allen, but I had a few HomeGoods gift cards burning a hole in my pocket, so I was able to pick up some fun things to make it happen, like the gold polka-dot tablecloth which was clearly manufactured just for me. I’m so glad we found each other at last.

I layered the striped table runner over that, except surprise! It’s not a runner, it’s just wrapping paper. One of my favorite quick and easy trick for dressing up a table. Plus, since it’s paper, no need to wash it later. Hey, I just thought of a great invention. What if we had PLATES made out of pap… oh, never mind.

gold flatware

Unfortunately, this gorgeous gold flatware does not belong to me *sob!* I borrowed it from my most fabulous friend Denise, who ordered it from Horchow.  Please join with me in telling the universe to send a set my way. (((((((())))))))) <–universe vibes

brass candlesticks

I’m slowly growing my collection of brass candlesticks.  They polish up so beautifully! You can also see my little brass giraffe peeking out there. Why a giraffe on the table? Why not? I found him in the thrift store, and he came in a pair, but the other giraffe was doing this weird sitting pose, so I didn’t buy it, and now I feel kinda bad about it.  Sorry divorced giraffes.

These hexagon-etched goblets were a HomeGoods score, on clearance even! Hurry, hurry and see if yours still has some!

I have to tell you that I scrolled through the first few pictures before reading and thought – the second table is definitely my favorite. Absolutely gorgeous!

I like yours better, ha! So much easier to, well, see everything – nothing gets lost in the GIANT stripes of the original (though pretty, it is a bit much!). And I love how you combined the stripes and the polka dots and the plates’ patterns, and they still all go together so well!

The black and white is really reminding me of something. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I think it might be prom… from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Or something like that. It feels very familiar to me, yet retro… I wish I could place it! Anyway, I hope that’s not offensive. It looks great! 🙂

Honestly, I’m not very impressed by the first table. It… lacks pizazz, but to be fair sometimes you want to be understated. Yours, though, with the patterns and the textures and the zing! It’s beautiful and so fun! Well done!

I like your take on the black, white and gold better than your pinspiration. Very pretty!

This post sparked something in my mother, and for her 60th we delivered pretty much on par with your inspiration picture (with MUCH scouting for JUST the right stuff, cause she HAS those Fleur de Lis placemats you have, but that would not do!)
