Who wore it best?

The other day I got a comment that I *think* was supposed to be mean.  Something about how Better After is the place where painting something white makes it “pretty.” Say that aloud and make finger quotations when you say ‘pretty.’  It seemed snarky, is what I’m saying.

Listen here jack.  Pretty much 98% of the time painting something white does, in fact, make it prettier. That’s just a truth of the universe. I bring to your attention exhibit A: this kitchen makeover from Stephanie.  Sure, those fake and outdated cabinets, peach countertops and sherbert-flavored walls might appeal to some people. But take these two pictures to Times Square, poll 100 people, and I’d bet my LIFE that the white one would be the winner hands down. The universe doesn’t lie.

More details to see at Simply Swider.

  1. Except, those cabinets weren’t just painted. They were replaced with white cabinets. Still, the white is prettier.

  2. The only part I disagree with, is that in those pictures, those aren’t the original cabinets painted white…that’s a whole new set of cabinets plus appliances and countertops! However, I do agree that painting something white usually makes it pretty!!!

  3. True. This is why I would make a terrible lawyer. ;)

  4. Then it’s a good thing you’re a successful blogger instead!! ;)

  5. Yeah, sounds like that snarky commenter is probably stuck in a house full of dark brown stained fake paneling and she’s just jealous. Because, as I say (in almost every comment I’ve ever made on this blog), painting it white pretty much ALWAYS makes it better. Well, you’ve featured a guy who does beautiful refinishing on wood pieces a couple times, and I would say he’s the exception. But other than that, yeah, painting it white does make it prettier. Just like that pretty kitchen up there.

  6. Barbara Sanders says:

I have no website. ..yet but ALWAYS turn to yours when I need a fix of inspiration. You go girl !!!!

  7. I still cringe a little when I paint REAL wood, but you are absolutely right…painting most “outdated” furniture, cabinets, etc makes it “prettier!” I am a firm believer in enhancing the piece…whatever that takes…and sometimes a good coat of paint is exactly what it needs! IGNORE THE HATERS! What I have learned is those people wouldn’t dare say that to your face…cowards hiding behind their computer! Your bring inspiration and hope to a lot of women who NEED to see how pretty “white” can be! That’s what matters!

  8. White is clean and a can then be used as a jumping off point for pops of color you can change at any given moment, and that works for a house full of kids and pudding fingers or my ADHD : )

  9. haters gonna hate. they can have that first kitchen! :)

  10. Aside from the hotly debated topic, I love those light fixtures! What a beautiful remodel!

  11. Jessica H says:

Yes, white is better than that old dated kitchen, but a sea of white blaring at me every day would just burn out my eyes. I prefer color. That lovely light green on the lights would make a great backsplash color. Or add some colorful pattern in the tiles and that kitchen would be fantastic.

  12. You can save almost ANYthing with white paint. btw, seemed snarky to me, too! And your blog is a LOT more than what your “critic” had to say about it — fresh ideas, repurposing, refreshing, lots of colors, lots of do’s and why-the-heck-did-they-do-and-how-do-I-save-this??? I love your blog.

  13. I agree with you except for the fact that this is an entirely new kitchen with the same floor plan–at least from the perspective of the before-and-after pictures. White is a wonderful option for the cabinets but it’s cheating if you replace the cabinetry, appliances, counter tops, and lighting and justify it as being labeled a remodel. This is a gut and re-place. It is a very pretty gut and replace but it is definitely not a remodel. And please, please, please, don’t take offense at my comments. The after is a vast improvement over the before and I would be proud to have the after to call my very own. Pffft! The BEFORE I would be pleased to call my own; you don’t want to see what I’ve called ‘my own’ for 18 years. I’m still waiting for my funding to come in!

  14. For a kitchen, white is always going to be the most timeless option. Love it!

  15. Thanks for featuring my kitchen! It’s still a work in progress. I’m a sucker for a white kitchen but we have plans for adding in some more mint and yellow accents. P.S. I can’t tell you how many snarky comments I’ve received about painting over wood, but I figure “my house, my rules!”

  16. Preach on Sister!

(My husband twitches a little whenever I mention painting anything wood that isn’t horrendously out of date; I think he’s going to have a paint sensor put on the bathroom vanities…)

  17. Beverly Kork says:

You can never satisfy 100% of the people so just do what YOU do best, and that’s showcasing the many inspirational homes, rooms and projects. I love ‘em all!

  18. Beautiful kitchen!! I’m loving all my dark stained wood but occasionally wonder if I will regret that down the road. Then again if I do end up wanting a change years down the road that is what primer and paint are for! :)

  19. Preach it sista’! I do absolutely agree, painting almost anything white will make it prettier! And can save a ton of things from ending up in the landfill and over-spent budgets too!!!! I LOVE your blog! I never have the money to do even the smallest things (okay, I DID have the money to buy 8 rolls of pretty shelf liner from the dollar store this summer and the inside of my 1960 kitchen drawers/cabinets feel better)and getting my daily dose of other people’s frugal make-overs and loveliness gives me hope that one day when the kids are grown and gone, I might have a spare dime and do something on my own… in the mean time, I get my fix from you! Don’t ever stop doing what you do because of the hateful snarky mean people. ;P to them! Go hate on something worthy of hating on!!!

  20. I LOVE the white! The great thing is that when you get tired of the “Pop” color, you can freshen it up just by changing a few decor items rather than the whole room. White always looks so clean, too! Snarkity, snark, snark!! sheesh!

  21. Love the new white kitchen and the lights over the island are the cat’s meow!

  22. Has that ‘snarky commenter’ been following your blog a while? I have, and I’ve seen you feature pieces and makeovers from every color on the spectrum. Can’t say I was happy with all of them either, but neither can you please all the people all the time. White is a neutral ‘crowd pleaser’, so I’m not surprised to see it featured as often as it is here, but whatever color you feature, the after is nearly 99.9%* always better than the ‘before’; which is the whole point of this inspirational blog visited and loved by so many, including myself. Keep up the great work, Lindsey!

*(So sorry about the purple piece comment. I promise to keep negative opinions to myself in the future.)

  23. Katherine says:

I agree with you that white makes ‘most everything better! Ignore the hate!

  24. You go girl! White IS PRETTY!

  25. I am all about color (purple/dandelion/periwinkle/granny smith apple/pink/aqua) and I take time to look at your blog almost everyday because I LOVE to see the transformations!!!!! and often, white is right : )

  26. Sarah M says:

I’m personally not a big fan of all white rooms and love the beautiful grain in wood. BUT, I’m not going to criticize someone because their taste is different than mine! Seeing items through other people’s eyes just expands our horizons and makes us try new and different things. Keep up the good work! Love this blog!

  27. Hi! First of all, I want to say I love your blog! I check it out every day. Second, just having a blog and finding stuff to write about (and show us!) is amazing. I don’t know how you do it. I LOVE white kitchens. Actually, I have a white kitchen which is now 20 years old and I am still seeing the same cabinets in stores that I have. It doesn’t look outdated. I have white tiles for a backsplash and I never get tired of it. I think you have to ignore snarky comments because 99% of people who read your blog love it. Keep doing it!

  28. You tell em’ girl. :)

Love the lights in this kitchen.

  29. …the Universe NEVER lies! :) Duh.

  30. Angela Kloss says:

No matter what color the afters are, I love reading your posts. Granted I have a thing for white currently which is surprising since I love I mean LOVE color. So yeah the white kitchen is awesome! And if for whatever reason someone doesn’t like your blog they can go find one that they do like. Keep on with the “prettiness” cause I love it!

  31. Maybe the quotation marks was their was of acknowledging that theirs and yours opinion of white things differ? That they, unlike you, don’t think white is pretty? Personally I think those white cabinets (and get rid of those awful island lights) would have looked lovely in that original kitchen with the peach walls. The peach and those teal lights would make a great contrast without adding so much white!

  32. It just kills me that people have to make mean, snarky comments. Did their mama ever teach them that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it! :-) If there is something I read on a blogger’s site that I don’t agree with or a style I don’t care for, I will never say anything negative, I just won’t comment. I always look forward to your posts. I love to see what others have done and have gotten a ton of ideas. I’m looking forward to the ugly lamp contest. There were many times on the last contest that I laughed so hard I snorted (all while at work – so embarrassing).

  33. Well obviously you have some critics who want to tear everything apart and focus on the wrong details. Point being the white kitchen, whether it’s new cabinets or decades old, is much prettier. Depending on a few renovation details we will be painting our old cabinets white, I’ll send that pic in once the Reno is complete. :)

As always, haters keep hatin’. ;)

  34. Mean people suck! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in my opinion, white is pretty pretty!!! Keep speakin your mind, Sista!

  35. You’ve featured plenty of my pieces and I don’t paint anything white. Haters gonna hate. I still read this blog more Than any other blog out there!
