Jen had this awkward little space off her stairway, made awkward-er by that white box in the corner. It was meant to discreetly hide the heating circuitry, but it wasn’t doing a very good job. I would have solved this problem by ignoring this problem, but not Jen!
She strategically cut spaces out of the back of an old buffet so the box could slide inside and the buffet could be flush with the wall. Sounds pretty simple right? But! That meant she also had to switch all the left side drawers to the right, which doesn’t sound so bad either, until you realize that there wasn’t one drawer on the right side to begin with, and she had to rebuild all the fittings herself. Wowza.
See the whole process on her blog Heim-elich (in German), and see how she created that fabulous peacock painting herself too, right here.

April 19, 2013 at 5:18 PMIt’s beautiful but heartbreaking at the same time. The “after” is functional and looks nice, but the “before” was the type of classic furniture that shouldn’t be altered.
I believe that “Form follows function,” but I also believe that things should be put to their “highest and best use.” Ideally, the buffet would have gone to someone who would keep it in its original condition and another piece of furniture (something plain, without this beautiful wood veneer and classic design) would have been customized to fit this space.

April 20, 2013 at 9:08 PMFurniture is to be used and fit into our homes as we see best. I think this a perfect example of making something work for this family. I absolutely love the makeover. It is still a gorgeous piece.

April 21, 2013 at 11:42 AMThanks for all your comments.
I am sure someone (ideally) might have loved it “at is”, but it was headed to the dump and I really enjoy it like this.
