Stepping Up In The World

Better After reader Becky is a busy mother of four, not to mention currently in the throes of nursing school. She needed a creative outlet, so she found solace in the soothing powers of spray paint. I don't have anything against pink plastic princesses, but I can see how this thing would aggravate an overheated brain.  Looks fabulously-blended-in-with-the-decor now!

And Molly at Just A Little Creativity also wanted to walk that fine line between keeping her kids happy without sacrificing style, so check out what she did with this old end table.  It's the swankiest Lego table I ever saw.

Advent-urous!

 Nov 29, 2012

The kind folks at Silhouette recently sent their limited edition Advent Calendar Kit to our house to try out.  I was thrilled!  Finally, an easy way to remember to take my daily vitamin packs!

My kids were not so excited, so I made this instead:

(That reindeer does not actually have magical sparkling powers, my camera is just weird.)

Fun!  Thanks Silhouette!  Check out the Advent Calendar kit and everything that comes with it HERE.

Don't forget the Black Friday special sale prices (with the code AFTER) end tomorrow

Dino-mite!

I love that Rebekah's son Greg chose emerald green as the main color of his room makeover, because it really shows off the handmade afghan that had been in their family for ages.  Somewhere Granny is rejoicing, I promise.  My grandma used to tell me the story of a friend of hers who was busy knitting an afghan once, when one of her grown sons came in and started admiring it.  "Gee, ma, this is really great.  I think I'd like to have one of these blankets too!" he said, to which she replied, "I already made you one, son. It's been in your doghouse for years." Bwoops.  I bet that guy felt like a jerk.

Anyway, I really like how she incorporated the stripes on the wall too.  Here's a secret: the white stripes are duct tape! That dinosaur decal is also a pile of radness. Lots more on her blog It Only Gets Better.

Will she ever stop? Yo, I don't know!

 Nov 28, 2012

Please prepare to have your socks knocked off once again by Jennifer from Dimples And Tangles. Seriously, reach down and grab a hold of them tightly, daily and nightly, because they are going to fly across the room when you get a load of this chair makeover she recently completed.  I love the gold, I love the fabric, I love the houndstooth, I just love it all. Oh, to be so fearlessly bold!

Hutch is Expected

This hutch came from way back in the days of yore, back when people used things like "house phones" instead of iPhones, and "cookbooks" instead of Pinterest. But just because it can't fit in your back pocket, does that mean this sturdy hard-working hutch should be relegated to the basement?  Of course not.

Better After reader Julie saved it from such fate and updated it by removing the doors and adding fabric to the back.  Because we'll always need a place for the DVR. At least, for a few years.

And here's another old-timey hutch-under (tried to combine the words 'hutch' and 'make-under' there, but it just sounds like a problematic underwear situation) from Jaque at The Big Plate of DIY. She hacked off the top of this hutch, or maybe it came off easily, who knows for sure, and made a streamlined console instead.  In red!

Wreath-Making With Me and The Fall Style Guide!

 Nov 27, 2012

As a proud member of The Home Depot's Fall Style Guide Blogger Network, I've found myself with an embarrassment of riches in the wreath-inspiration department. Have you seen their wreath projects? Or their wreath board on Pinterest?  If none of these ideas inspire you to deck your halls then nothing will, you old Scrooge.

But true confession alert: I have never, ever, ever made a wreath before. In my entire life. Like, ever.

So, I decided to give it a go.  Only, with my limited wreath expertise, I didn't want to spend tons of money and end up with something tragic.  So, I raided my neighbor's field harvested some nearby branches at the cost of free.

They are not so cute, I know.  But I had envisioned a rustic stick wreath painted a bold gold, and by golly, that's what I was going to turn these into if it killed me.

It almost killed me.  Just kidding, it was surprisingly easy.  I didn't even use a wreath form, because I'm cheap I wanted it to look organic.

The process is very simple: gather branches, wire them into a circular shape with floral wire, spray paint it gold; discover that gold spray paint doesn't show up on plain branches at all, start again with white spray paint; THEN spray paint them gold again, only to realize that you kind of like how the white tips look against the gold, so you leave them like that; make a lame joke about "frosted tips," declare your wreath a success and hang it on your door.

It's hard to capture in photos, but the gold really does look so pretty.

Tip: lots of wire.  Lots and lots of wire.

I used cheapo cheappity .97 white spray paint, but for the gold, I used Rustoleum Hammered spray paint in gold. Great quality paint, but next time I would go for an even brighter gold, this one is a bit muted.

Then I had time and spare floral wire to kill, so I strung up some beaded garland to make a fun 'A' initial. Matt likes it. I'm still deciding.

I like that it looks appropriately fallish/wintery, without being a full blown Christmas wreath just yet. And it cost about eight bucks, and it took maybe a few hours, most of that waiting for paint to dry.

I have a lot more wreath inspiration on my Fall Style Guide Pinterest board, so do check that out!

One time I actually saw a grown woman spell the word wreath "reef." Just thought everyone should know that so no one makes that mistake in the future.

And remember you can always find seasonal inspiration plus the best projects, trends and colors year round with The Home Depot's Style Guides

The Good Leopard

Any sane person would agree that wall-to-wall leopard-print carpeting would be too bold for one room to handle, unless that room was the blackjack lounge at the Mirage Casino in Vegas. At least, that's what I used to think, until I saw this makeover from Jennifer at Dimples And Tangles.

The carpet looked pretty rad even before, but now, with that deep color on the ceiling and the natural wood accents highlighted throughout the room, it looks so sophisticated and cool.  Tons of great details in this space. Check out Jennifer's blog to see more, and get some expert tips on styling bookcases.  Her paperback storage idea is my favorite!

Fussy Love

 Nov 26, 2012

I always love a great chandelier redo, and Shanna at Restoration Redoux is a great chandelier redo-er. While most people would have been turned off by the brassy flowers, cut crystal, and overall fussiness of this chandelier, Shanna dove in head first and added more color, more crystal, and fearlessly fussed it up hardcore. My verdict? The whole thing looks fan-freaking-tastic.

And all that pizazz!

Ashley was thrilled to find this sturdy old workhorse of a table that was a perfect fit for her growing family.  All it needed was a little pizazz.  And if the vibrant new fabric on her chairs doesn't spell 'pizazz,' I don't know what does.  I DO know that not enough people know how to spell pizazz, though, because I belong to a dance group called "Lotta Pizazz," and sometimes we are introduced as "Lotta Pizzas."  Sigh.

See more from Ashley at Pearl Art and Design.
