Peek at my Potty, plus a Cutting Edge Stencil GIVEAWAY! (GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED)

 Sep 30, 2011

(Giveaway now closed)

So, the previous owners of my house had an intense love affair with the colors red (tile), orange (cabinets), brown (carpet), and maroon (countertops), and, inexplicably, gold glitter (plastered on random surfaces, no joke, we had to remove it with a belt sander, it took 3 entire days), so in the couple of years we've been here, we've been slowly undoing all that mess while still trying to figure out what we want it to be.

One room the previous owners hadn't touched was our half-bath downstairs.  No paint, no faux brick murals like they blessed us with in the other parts of the house, no gold glitter thank heavens, no nothing.  Basically a sink and a toilet.  Well guess what?  I finally did something about it!  Check it out:

Woo!  Do you like it?  Isn't that better?  I'm pretty happy with it.  Everyone who sees it seems to like it too, if only because I force absolutely anybody who drops by to take a look. Friends, neighbors, the UPS man, the guy who fixed my sprinklers today, I don't care, I'm so proud of it!

Gray paint is Weathered Tin by whatever the cheapest brand at Walmart is. (my very favorite gray)

White paint is Whipped White by Dutch Boy Refresh Paint, (this stuff is great, it doesn't even smell!)

Mirror is from Home Goods.

Light fixture (not that you can see it, someone please tell me how to take a picture of a light) was on clearance at Home Depot.

And the piece de resistance; the stunning stencil is the Zamira from Cutting Edge Stencils.

BEST PART:  Cutting Edge Stencils is going to give away any stencil design up to $50 to one lucky Better After reader!  Hooray!

Here is the stencil in action.  It was really easy to use once we got the hang of it.  You definitely want to use a foam roller like this and go v e r y   l i g h t l y  on the paint.  We did a light coat followed by a few minutes spent watching 30 Rock, followed by another light coat, then we'd move the stencil.  The cutouts on the bottom are there to help you line it up exactly when you move the stencil, and we didn't have any trouble staying on track.

That's not my burly arm up there, that is my husband Matt's.  I say "we" but I mean "he" because he did all the painting.  He tries to pretend he doesn't like it, but look at that grin.

I helped by watching 30 Rock while he painted and also taking stupid pictures of myself in the mirror.

I was VERY impressed with how well the stencil worked, the lines were so crisp and clean. I only ever had to do minor touch ups when we accidentally overloaded the paint brush, or around the back of the toilet where we gave up altogether and I free-handed it.  It was a little difficult getting into the corners with the stencil, but there are really helpful tips on their YouTube channel, which I wish I would have taken more advantage of.

All in all, this entire makeover took about 8 hours total, a pretty decent time-to-outcome ratio, I'd say.

I once heard that you should have something unexpected in every room, so this is it.  A tiny hot air balloon!  You can only see when you are standing at the mirror, it's like a little prize for washing your hands! Or I guess you can see it if you gaze upward while on the toilet, but who would do such a thing?

SO!  Would you like to win $50 toward any stencil of your choice from Cutting Edge Stencils?  (Almost all of their stencils are well under this price range.  The Zamira stencil that I used was $37.95).  They have so many styles to choose from, there really is something for everybody.

Enter below!  (I'm trying out this new Rafflecopter thingy to help make the giveaway entering process as easy as possible for you, we'll see how it goes ...)

3 chances to win!

Fashion Friday!

Every so often, (ok, twice now) I veer away from home and furniture makeovers and feature fashion before and afters instead!  Because I sure do love those too. What's better than reinventing something you've had hanging in your closet for ages into an item you are actually excited to wear?

This fun denim do-over from Francesca came to me about a week too late, as I JUST BARELY took a stack of old flare-leg jeans to Goodwill.  She dyed this pair using iDye in silver/gray and restitched the legs to a slimmer fit.   They look great; I'm so mad! Arg!  I will find consolation by reminding myself that I really can't sew anyway, and if I tried to construct skinnies out of flares I would would probably produce some sort of franken-jean that I wouldn't be able to get my feet into nor out of.  Best to leave it to the pros.

Squared Away

Rebecca had a big, empty room that was great for spontaneous square-dancing, but not much else.  Not being much of a square-dancer, she decided to turn it into a craft room instead.  Oh no, problem alert! All she had was a budget of $0!  Did she let that stop her?  Psh.  Don't be silly.

First she scraped up some fundage by selling a few unwanted items on craigslist.  Then she used the cash to purchase the larger items of furniture, and found a few freebies from shopping the house (and maybe the alley) along the way.  Now it's a colorful craftopia!  Check it out on her blog Older and Wisor.

What I Like About You

 Sep 29, 2011

Two things I do not agree with in this before bathroom:  The "dressing room" light fixture.  Those things should be banned in all 50 states.  And the builder-basic mirror, which lacks any sort of depth or personality.  Also, the combination of etched glass and brass on the shower door.  (Not that I agree with either of those things on their own.)  And the muted mauve wallpaper border. Plus the absence of a fun way to pass the time while in the bathroom, like say, a chalkboard wall for which to play tic-tac-toe upon. So I guess that was really six things.  But I am finding the after MUCH more agreeable!

Been spending most our lives ... living in a gangsta's paradise...

It's time for another episode of "I Can't Believe You Found That in the TRASH!" with special guest star, Intensely Awesome Mirror.  In this tearjerking episode, Carla discovers a dusty but nearly perfect mirror cast into the garbage.  Horrified, she cleans it up and nurtures it back to health, giving this once street-tough decor some self-respect and a place to finally call home.

White Hot, Black Out, Gray Matter

Do you have a large item of furniture that is just screaming out for a fresh paint job, but you can't decide exactly what paint color that should be?   Let me help!

Try white! Like Darci from The Buhl Family did here! White fixes everything!

Or black!  Like Shannon from Shabby to Chic Queen Creek did here!  Black is practically foolproof!

Or, if you are decision-makingly challenged and non-confrontational like me, do a little of both and make everyone happy: gray!

From Ronda at Edward's Lane.

If you are also like me, white, black and gray are the three colors you never stray far from. So I probably didn't help you make a decision at all.  Shoot.  Ok, how about this: Try coral! I hear it's the latest thing. From the fabulous Rashon, AKA Mr. Goodwill Hunting.

Here's the story ...

 Sep 28, 2011

What happens when you take a 40-year-old stereo cabinet, add a chevron pattern that could have easily been inspired from one of Marsha Brady's headbands, and top it off with traditional asian hardware?  Asian-mod perfection that looks groovier than ever today!  From Kim at Of All the Fish in the Sea.

Frustration to Elation

Woah.  There was a serious case of toy diarrhea up in here.  Rach knew something had to be done.  She had already won a bunch of cool-mom points by letting her kids have the 'formal' dining room as a toy room, but now she needed some inspiration, organization and colorization.  I'd say mission accomplished.  Check out more on her blog Family Ever After.

This seat is saved.

Katlyn from The Richter's World found this chair for $5 at a yard sale.  She wasn't too terrified of its orange disintegrating fabric, weathered wood and nests of spiders (yikes!), and she turned it around into a lovely—"Yeah yeah, 'scuse me, Cat here.  Katlyn made nice chair for me.  No try to sit here.  Go away, this my chair.  I watching you. Go away. I nap now."

Office Supply

 Sep 27, 2011

Holly needed some workspace, but all she had was this crappity built-in inside her closet.  Light bulb!  Why not carve out a little bit of space for an office right here?  She used nailhead trim over silver vinyl to cover the damaged surfaces and hemmed a Target tablecloth to hide the shelves and bins.  SO cute.  My workspace is jealous and wants a Target tablecloth and poky wall sculptures too!

If it was up to me, I might have removed some of the drawers for my knobby knees to fit under, but I can understand not wanting to lose any storage space too.  What would you do?

Sherri Shares Her Wares

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, people are finding inspiration from like-minded DIY-ers all over the world. For this piece, Sherri from Poland was inspired by Miss Mustard Seed in Pennsylvania.  Would that have happened a decade or two ago?  No!  The only contact I ever had with a far-flung foreigner before the internet came along was my 2nd grade German penpal Luka, who wrote once and I never heard from again.  I hope he's ok ...

Check out more from Sherri and this commissioned piece on her blog DesignDisorder.

Blinded by the Light

Kimbo has big, colorful style – style that did not jibe well with white-walled rental living.  There was no jibing to be had at all.  So she found a few non-permanent ways to add some color and character to her home.  Like board and batten made from, get this ... old mini-blinds!  She repainted them and tacked them up with teensy nails that can easily be removed.  Would have NEVER thought of that one!  Check it out on her blog A Girl and a Glue Gun.

And it doesn't matter if your rental was built last week, for some reason they all come standard with Intensely Outdated Lights.  She devised a solution by covering a bit of sheet metal with happy houndstooth fabric for a custom drumshade that fits right over the top!  Fantastic.  Check out that process HERE.
